[Source](https://www.pexels.com/photo/notebook-macbook-pro-designer-technology-34199/) - **Design by Me**
**The issue of image manipulation I believe that is the most controversial subject and discussed among photographers on blogs, discussion forums and social networks. Nowadays with the many options of editing programs and manipulation of images mainly on the internet, it is possible for the photographer not only to make the edits simple and I would say "acceptable" in the photo, such as brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness and even crop the image, but we can also find bolder and less "moral" options such as removing a person from a place, changing positions of objects, fine-tuning the face, leaving it looking slimmer, among other advanced options**. ___

Despite this ease of access to the advanced tools of editing and manipulation of images in this digital era of photography, today is very difficult to believe in the images we see in the photos that are produced. I believe that the normal editing in the photo with adjusting its brightness, saturation, contrast and sharpness are the acceptable technical procedures in photography and I use them in most of my photos and there is no harm in it. ___

**I learned some time ago that there is no problem in editing your photo using simple tools, because you did not hurt during this process the main characteristics of the photo and the elements that make it up. But when we go to the manipulation, how to change people and objects of the place the photo stops being of photo and turns illustration, therefore the photo loses all its originality and characteristic**. ____

Reading some articles during this week focused on the history of photography and photojournalism, I came to a point in the text where it deals exactly on the issue of manipulation of images and I read that this distrust of the public to the photograph is not of today, but throughout the photographic history The camera is seen as an equipment that can greatly change the prospects of what she records. ___

**Two sentences that caught my attention and left me thinking for a long time is that of **Dennis Dunleavy**, a great American photojournalist, who said**: >"Even the smile is a form of manipulation, because that masks the feeling of who is photographing." >"Historically, photography is always about manipulation." I personally don't like to edit very much the image, at most some corrections and application of some filter that enhances the colors of the photo. My favorite filters are HDR and Orton Style. Working as a photojournalist I learned that the image should be what it is and photojournalism works with the reality of the facts, manipulations of any kind in the image are unacceptable. ____
I Go much Further...
-
I Believe that the Whole History of Photography is the Search for Reality as much as Possible.
= ___
If you missed the previous issues of my "Photographic Reflections", you can read my thoughts on these links below:
- * [The Problem with Photographing Flowers](https://steemit.com/writing/@jsantana/photographic-reflections-the-problem-with-photographing-flowers) * [Photography as Therapy](https://steemit.com/photography/@jsantana/photographic-reflections-photography-as-therapy) * [Why Don't I Feel Offended When They Praise my Camera?](https://steemit.com/photography/@jsantana/photographic-reflections-why-don-t-i-feel-offended-when-they-praise-my-camera) * [Shooting is not just Pressing the Camera Button](https://steemit.com/photography/@jsantana/photographic-reflections-shooting-is-not-just-pressing-the-camera-button) ___
For new reflections, stay tuned for the next posts!
= ___
Thanks for reading my post!
=
Obrigado por ter lido o meu post!
___
*All photos are my own, signed in © and taken with my Sony Alpha ILCE 3500*.
____

I cant say the answer is black and white (photobug humor lol). I think its each to their own, with no clear right or wrong. I can say from having a darkroom when I was a young kid, the act of developing enabled manipulation. Some even feel their Photoshop skills are art, much like a painter. I myself like both. I appreciate the street photographer shooting with film and some lovely Photoshop edits.

I've played a lot with manipulations, but working seriously with photography today I see that beauty is in reality. Digital photography has brought many benefits, but also a lot of fantasy. The photographers abuse the editors too much, leaving the photo very "plastic". Today I only edit by putting more contrast, brightness, saturation and vignetting at times. That's enough.
