I assure you that these Freudian thoughts struck me unexpectedly yesterday, walking through the Center of Madrid, where it seems that lately I feel like a fish in water -not to say, like a frog in a puddle or an ant in an anthill- when passing by the Puerta del Sol, I observed some workers, with their corresponding crane, mounting a huge synthetic fir tree, which threatened to overshadow the tower of the Community of Madrid building - former headquarters of the General Directorate of the Police - that supports the scandalous and at the same time famous clock that every Christmas welcomes the New Year, with the traditional twelve chimes.
[Les aseguro que estos freudianos pensamientos me asaltaron inesperadamente ayer, paseando por el Centro de Madrid, donde parece que últimamente me siento como pez en el agua -por no decir, como rana en el charco o hormiga en el hormiguero- cuando al pasar por la Puerta del Sol, observé a unos operarios, con su correspondiente grúa, montando un descomunal abeto sintético, que amenazaba con hacer sombra a la torre del edificio de la Comunidad de Madrid -antigua sede de la Dirección General de la Policía- que soporta al escandaloso y a la vez famoso reloj que todos las Navidades da la bienvenida al Año Nuevo, con las tradicionales doce campanadas].

Somewhat later, in that beautiful period building -which was not spared being one of the most terrible Czechs of our damn Civil War- in which today, practically newly modeled, the Canalejas Shopping Center and the brand-new and very expensive Hotel share the limelight Hermes, I came across a similar case: half a sidewalk cut, a worker warning pedestrians to pass with caution, a crane that had nothing to envy the one I had just seen at Puerta del Sol and a group of workers, some Of which he wondered about where to place the most voluminous balls, perhaps not remembering those Army parades, where the tallest ones appeared in front and the shortest behind them, which were generally called 'the small change'.
[Algo más adelante, en ese hermoso edificio de época -que tampoco se libró de ser una de las más terribles Checas de nuestra maldita Guerra Civil- en el que hoy, prácticamente recién modelado, comparten protagonismo el Centro Comercial Canalejas y el novísimo y carísimo Hotel Hermes, me encontré con un caso similar: media acera cortada, una trabajadora advirtiendo a los peatones para que pasaran con precaución, una grúa que nada tenía que envidiar a la que acababa de ver en la Puerta del Sol y un grupo de operarios, alguno de los cuales se hacía cábalas sobre dónde colocar las bolas más voluminosas, quizás no recordando aquellos desfiles del Ejército, donde delante figuraban los más altos y detrás, los más bajitos, a los que generalmente se les llamaba ‘la calderilla’].
