Jaén is something more than a land of proud olive growers, as a well-known poem by Miguel Hernández, converted into a song, asserts: it is a legendary land, where the immense treasure that the liquid gold of oil undoubtedly represents, is also joined by an important heritage treasure, where even the castles or what remains of them, inevitably invite adventure and daydreaming.

We are talking, as in the case of the rocky castle of Albánchez, about fortresses, whose melancholic remains continue to look out over those same infinite scenes that watched over and protected those medieval borders that separated the Christian kingdoms from those others, the Nasrid ones, who were increasingly seeing themselves cornered and pushed towards the sea.

In fact, being the object of disputes between feudal lords and ambitious military orders, where there was no lack of that supposed Templar heir, which, according to some authors, was the Order of Calatrava, they only began to lower their guard after the conquest of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, to become romantic eagle's nests, from which to glimpse a wonderful horizon, where there is no lack, of course, of the formidable presence of enigmatic mountain ranges, such as those of Mágina and Cazorla.

Jaén es algo más que una tierra de aceituneros altivos, como asevera una conocida poesía de Miguel Hernández convertida en canción: es una tierra legendaria, donde al inmenso tesoro que representa, indudablemente, ese oro líquido que es el aceite, se une, también, un importante tesoro patrimonial, donde incluso los castillos o lo que queda de ellos, invitan, ineludiblemente, a la aventura y a la ensoñación.

Hablamos, como en el caso del castillo roqueño de Albánchez, de unas fortalezas, cuyos melancólicos restos continúan oteando esos mismos e infinitos escenarios que vigilaban y protegían aquellas fronteras medievales que separaban los reinos cristianos de aquellos otros, los nazaríes, que cada vez iban viéndose más acorralados y empujados hacia el mar.

De hecho, siendo objeto de disputas entre señores feudales y ambiciosas órdenes militares, donde no faltó esa supuesta heredera templaria, que, según algunos autores, fue la Orden de Calatrava, tan sólo comenzaron a bajar la guardia, tras la conquista de Granada por los Reyes Católicos, en 1492, para convertirse en románticos nidos de águila, desde los que atisbar un maravilloso horizonte, donde no faltan, desde luego, la formidable presencia de sierras enigmáticas, como la de Mágina y la de Cazorla.
