In this place, which the hand of man has modified, drying up an immemorial swamp where King Alfonso X the Wise liked to hunt birds in its marshes, is not exactly the crude hermitage, dedicated to the figure of the Holy Cross. -discovered in Jerusalem by Saint Helena, mother of the Emperor of Byzantium, Constantine, who had the famous vision of a cross in the sky accompanied by a determining phrase, 'in hoc signo vinces' or 'with this symbol you will win', before the famous battle of Puente Milvio and whose situation was revealed to him in a dream- but the singular cave, on whose walls, prehistoric man left traces of his first encounters with the unknowable and sacredness.

But, in addition, the entrance to such an immemorial place of worship has a marvelous added architectural element, which makes it little less than unique of its kind: the spectacular Romanesque arch that supports it and has accompanied it, at least, since those distant days of the 12th century, when the area formed part of the so-called Duero border, which separated Christian Spain from Muslim Spain and also welcomed numerous seekers of God, who voluntarily retired to the solitude of these places.

En este lugar, que la mano del hombre ha modificado, desecando un inmemorial pantano en el que el rey Alfonso X el Sabio gustaba de cazar pajarillos en sus marjales, no es, precisamente, la tosca ermita, dedicada a la figura de la Santa Cruz -descubierta en Jerusalén por Santa Elena, madre del emperador de Bizancio, Constantino, el que tuvo la famosa visión de una cruz en el cielo acompañada por una frase determinante, ‘in hoc signo vinces’ o ‘con este símbolo vencerás’, antes de la famosa batalla de Puente Milvio y cuya situación le fue revelada en un sueño- sino la singular cueva, en cuyas paredes, el hombre prehistórico dejó huellas de sus primeros encuentros con lo incognoscible y la sacralidad.

Pero, además, la entrada a tan inmemorial lugar de culto tiene un maravilloso elemento arquitectónico añadido, que la hace poco menos que única en su género: el espectacular arco románico que la apuntala y que la acompaña, cuando menos, desde aquellos lejanos días del siglo XII, cuando la zona formaba parte de la denominada frontera del Duero, que separaba la España cristiana de la España musulmana y acogía, también, a numerosos buscadores de Dios, que voluntariamente se retiraban a la soledad de estos lugares.
