Although the term was coined in the 1990s, the current state of neuroscience seems to corroborate the discovery made by Professor Ramachandran and his team at the University of California, California, USA, aimed at revealing the relationship between a very specific part of the human brain, the temporal lobe, and the mystical experiences associated with this complex area of its neural network.

This fascinating psychitecture, surprising as it may seem, may have also been, in some way, intuited in medieval times, and this statement can be reasonably understood if we put aside our prejudices and consider that the vast majority of our temples—those same ones that many today look down on, considering them little more than old stones—were precision machines, capable of inducing altered states of consciousness and therefore an invaluable key to unlocking that area of the brain, which, far from being ironic, Professor Ramachandran very aptly named the God Module.

In fact, no one ignores that, within its interior, even altered by additions from other periods and styles and partially silenced by the placement of ancient Baroque altarpieces, sound, for example, reverberates in a very particular way and, like the famous Tibetan mantras—let's take, for example, the hackneyed "Om mani padme um"—can provoke a momentary state of sensory liberation or exaltation, in some cases very similar, fundamentally and comparatively speaking, to the surprising experiences that characterized the great medieval mystics.

Aunque fue un término acuñado en los años noventa del pasado siglo XX, el estado actual de la Neurociencia parece corroborar el descubrimiento realizado por el profesor Ramachandran y su equipo de la Universidad estadounidense de California, encaminado a poner de manifiesto la relación existente entre una parte muy determinada del cerebro humano, el lóbulo temporal y las experiencias místicas relacionadas con esa compleja zona de su red neuronal.

Esta apasionante psiquitectura, por sorprendente que parezca, puede que también fuera, de alguna manera, intuida en tiempos medievales y esta afirmación puede ser razonablemente comprendida, si dejamos a un lado nuestros prejuicios y pensamos que la gran mayoría de nuestros templos, esos mismos que hoy en día muchos miran con desprecio, considerándolos poco más que piedras viejas, eran máquinas de precisión, capaces de provocar estados alterados de conciencia y por lo tanto, una llave inapreciable para desbloquear esa zona del cerebro, que, lejos de ser una ironía, el profesor Ramachandran denominó, muy acertadamente, con el significativo nombre de Módulo de Dios.

De hecho, nadie ignora, que, en su interior, aun alterados por incorporaciones de otras épocas y estilos y parcialmente silenciados por la colocación de vetustos retablos barrocos, el sonido, por ejemplo, reverbera de una forma muy particular y como los famosos mantras tibetanos -pongamos como ejemplo, el manido ‘Om mani padme um- puede provocar un momentáneo estado de liberación sensorial o de exaltación, en algunos casos, muy similares, en el fondo y comparativamente hablando, a las sorprendentes experiencias que caracterizaban a los grandes místicos medievales.
