The undisputed capital of that land, Campoo, whose prominence it shares with Palencia itself, whose Gothic Fields constitute one of the sections of the Camino de Santiago most feared by long-suffering pilgrims, Reinosa, after centuries, remains that melancholy town, fallen into disrepair, through which the same river flows taciturnly. The river, joyful and rebellious at its source, descends towards the Plateau, carving out formidable canyons and flooding towns that once, not so long ago, were prosperous and a refuge for merchants: the Ebro.

By the banks of its shores or on either side of that medieval bridge that now bears modern cement and concrete on its solid back, the different architectures become a poem, where time, design, and fashions form a very particular symphony, in which surely many travelers seasoned by the adventure of history miss those old mansions where that clean-shaven boy spent the night, who, Landing in the neighboring Asturian port of Tazones, he was nearly lynched by humble fishermen when both he and his entourage were mistaken for pirates: Charles I of Spain and V of Germany.

A few years before him, the blue-blooded Prince Don Juan, son of the Catholic Monarchs, also stopped by this same shore, on his way to the Gothic mansion where his fiancée, Princess Margaret of Austria, was staying. A few meters away, lost in that maze of industrial modernism, wounded by memory, that is its old buildings, the solid walls of the old mansion still stand. One day in 1681, Juan Francisco de Güemes, the former viceroy of Mexico, was born. Therefore, it can be said that a stroll through Reinosa also means a stroll through many forgotten pages of history.

Capitalidad indiscutible de esa tierra, la de Campoo, cuyo protagonismo comparte con esa misma Palencia, cuyos Campos Góticos constituyen una de las partes del Camino de Santiago más temida por los sufridos peregrinos, Reinosa, al cabo de los siglos continúa siendo esa melancólica villa, venido a menos, por las que discurre taciturno ese mismo río, que, alegre y rebelde en su nacimiento, desciende hacia la Meseta labrando formidables cañones y anegando pueblos, que un día, no lejano, fueron prósperos y refugio de comerciantes: el Ebro.

A la vera de sus orillas o a uno y otro lado de ese puente medieval que ahora llevar sobre su sólido espaldar el cemento y el hormigón moderno, las diferentes arquitecturas se convierten en un poema, donde tiempo, diseño y modas conforman una sinfonía muy particular, en la que seguramente muchos viajeros avezados por la aventura de la Historia, echan de menos aquellos viejos palacetes en los que pernoctó aquel barbilampiño, que, desembarcando en el vecino puerto asturiano de Tazones, a punto estuvo de ser linchado por los humildes pescadores, cuando, tanto él como su séquito fueron confundidos con piratas: Carlos I de España y V de Alemania.

Algunos años antes que él, también la sangre azul de príncipe Don Juan, hijo de los Reyes Católicos, se dejó caer por esta misma ribera, de camino hacia la casona gótica donde se alojaba su prometida, la princesa Margarita de Austria y a escasos metros, perdida en ese dédalo de modernismo industrial herido por el recuerdo, que son sus viejos edificios, todavía se alzan los sólidos muros del viejo caserón, que, un día del año 1681, fue nacer a Juan Francisco de Güemes, el que fuera virrey de México, por lo que bien se puede decir que un paseo por Reinosa, significa, también, un paseo por muchas páginas olvidadas de la Historia.
