Ramón y Cajal: Reflection and Shadow

It could be said, objectively speaking, that both reflections and shadows would have a certain level of kinship, especially in a universe where optics could also be considered from the point of view of illusion and perspective.

Curiously, the horror literature, sticking to those overwhelming legends about vampires, so widespread, especially in Central Europe and Greece, however, wanted the vampire to have his shadow - the shadow cast on the wall by the Nosferatu de Murnau, it represents an overwhelmingly exciting scene- but it denied him the grace of reflection and, consequently, the eternal rejection of the mirror.

Contrary to that chillingly romantic being that the vampire is, the one who was one of our most illustrious doctors, Ramón y Cajal, has a beautiful monument in our Madrid Parque del Retiro, where he enjoys both privileges: the shadow of his statue, reclining in a triclinium, as if he were a Roman senator and the reflection produced by that wonderful mirror effect, which always has that vital liquid, which is water.

La sombra y el reflejo siempre han sido tema de discusión, creación y hasta de más de un disparate. Recuerdo haber escuchado alguna vez de un hombre que perdió su sombra. Me suena mucho esa referencia y podría aplicarse, comparativamente hablando, en ficciones como la Chesterton y su 'el hombre que fue jueves' o aquélla otra, otro clásico también, de 'el negro que tenía el alma blanca'. A veces creo que resulta razonable acudir a la literatura, a la leyenda y a la tradición, para colocar algunas guirnaldas que adornen un poco la narración. En ese sentido iba un poco la entrada y la referencia a los vampiros. Podría haberlo hecho desde otro punto de vista más complejo, como las tesis al respecto, de alguien por el que siento un verdadero respeto: el doctor C.G. Jung. Pero tampoco era mi intención profundizar demasiado. Yo creo que el mundo y sus circunstancias están en una etapa donde se está perdiendo lo primordial, que después de todo, no es ni la sombra ni el reflejo, sino como bien dices, es el alma. Pero también quiero ser optimista y pensar que quizás estas situaciones tan indeseablemente radicales sean el preludio para un futuro y un mundo mejor. O al menos, no permitir que el abatimiento nos vampirice y nos quite, aparte de la esperanza, el único recurso que nos queda: el instinto de lucha y supervivencia. Un abrazo
