Son muchas las leyendas, no sólo referidas al ámbito de España sino también al ámbito mundial, que hablan de pueblos sumergidos en lo más profundo de las aguas de lagos y pantanos, generalmente castigados por una maldición.
[There are many legends, not only referring to Spain but also worldwide, that speak of peoples submerged in the depths of the waters of lakes and swamps, generally punished by a curse].

Por ejemplo, afirman los habitantes del Bierzo leonés, que en el fondo del lago de Carucedo, cercano a las famosas minas de las Médulas, yace una antigua ciudad romana, sumergida por la ira de la ninfa Carisia al haber provocado la insaciable avidez de oro de sus habitantes, la ruina de los montes del entorno.

Ésta, no obstante, es una de las muchas versiones con las que el pueblo intenta explicar ciertos sucesos -no olvidemos, que en toda leyenda subyace siempre una parte de realidad- que convulsionaron sus vidas, aunque la más extendida de las leyendas -que podría ser también, un interesado toque de atención en favor de la hospitalidad a los peregrinos que se dirigen hacia Santiago de Compostela- narra el castigo divino a ciertos pueblos, cuyos habitantes no cumplieron con el sagrado mandamiento de la hospitalidad, siendo en casi todos los casos la figura de Jesucristo, disfrazada de peregrino, la que se viera ultrajada y rechazada por segunda vez.

La sumersión de muchos pueblos, tiene, sin embargo, una explicación más sencilla, que no necesariamente más racional: la creación de embalses y pantanos, siguiendo unos planes hidrológicos en muchas ocasiones incomprensibles.

Sería el caso del pueblo soriano de La Muedra, sumergido por las aguas del pantano de la Cuerda del Pozo, del que apenas se vislumbra la parte superior de la torre de su vieja iglesia, cuando las aguas están bajas, la cual parece lanzar un mudo reproche a la insensatez de los hombres.
