Hello friends.
The Hague is a city where the law is enforced for a democratic, civilized world, a city with a beautiful North Sea embankment, a city of elegant streets with numerous squares and parks, a city with an extraordinary history, which almost every other building "plows" with. By the way, there are several prisons in The Hague. Agree that it is convenient: they were convicted and immediately imprisoned. True, these prisons look much better than student dormitories in Ukraine. In this amazing city, there is even a Museum of Gevangenpoort, which means "Prison Gate"!

Гаага – місто, де вершиться закон для демократичного, цивілізованого світу, місто з прекрасною набережною Північного моря, місто ошатних вуличок з численними скверами та парками, місто з надзвичайною історією, якою “аж пашить” чи не кожна друга споруда. До слова, у Гаазі є декілька в’язниць. Погодьтеся, що це зручно: засудили і зразу ж посадили. Правда виглядають ці в’язниці на багато краще ніж студентські гуртожитки в Україні. В цьому дивовижному місті існує навіть Музей Гевангенпорт, що означає “В’язничні ворота”!

It used to be a prison. It opened its gates in 1428 for debtors and criminals. All of them were awaiting trial here and testified at interrogations. Since there is still a torture chamber on the first floor of the prison, one can only guess how the inquiry procedure was carried out.
In general, this museum demonstrates the evolution of the judicial system - from medieval shackles and various tortures to the highest democracy.
The Hague is the third largest city in the Netherlands. This is where the parliament and the royal family live.

>Колись це була тюрма. Свої ворота вона відкрила у 1428 році  для боржників та злочинців. Всі вони очікували тут суду та давали свідчення на допитах. Так, як на першому поверсі в’язниці і досі є камера тортур, то можна лише здогадуватися, як проводилася процедура дізнання.
А взагалі, цей музей демонструє еволюцію судової системи – від середньовічних кайданів та різноманітних тортур до найвищого демократизму.  
Гаага третє за розміром місто Нідерландів. Саме тут розміщений парламент та живе королівська сім’я.  

The first point of my trip to The Hague was the North Sea. While walking near the beach, I noticed huge sculptures of funny little men. These are the works of Tom Otterness, an American artist. It turns out that they are an exhibit of a modern museum located near the beach. Since I am not very interested in modern art, I did not go to the museum, but I liked the figures. Such an interesting street art.

>Першим пунктом моєї подорожі по Гаазі було Північне море. Прогулюючись біля пляжу, я звернула увагу на величезні скульптури веселих чоловічків. Це роботи Тома Оттеррнеса, американського митця. Виявляється, що вони є експозицією сучасного музею, який розташований поблизу пляжу.   Так, як сучасне мистецтво мене не дуже цікавить, до музею я не ходила, та фігури мені сподобалися. Такий-собі цікавий стрит-арт.

I was near the largest memorial in the Netherlands. It is located in The Hague on Plein 1813. The solemn opening of the monument took place in November 1869.

>Була я біля самого великого меморіалу Нідерландів. Він знаходиться в Гаазі на площі “Plein 1813”. Урочисте відкриття пам’ятника відбулося в листопаді 1869 року. 

What is interesting about this monument? It symbolizes the independence of the Netherlands, like the American Statue of Liberty. The Mother of God is located at the peak of the memorial. If you look closely, you can see that there are broken shackles on her legs. This means the liberation of the country from French oppression. The Mother of God is holding arrows, which are a very ancient symbol of the country.

>Чим цікавий цей монумент? Він  символізує незалежність Нідерландів, як наприклад Американська Статуя Свободи. На піку меморіалу розташована Богородиця. Якщо придивитися, то можна побачити, що на її ногах є зломлені кайдани. Це означає звільнення країни від Французького гніту. Богородиця тримає в руках стріли, які є дуже старовинним символом країни.

The monument depicts the coats of arms of 9 provinces of the country, in accordance with its constitution of 1814. A little below is immortalized the Prince of Orange, swearing to the constitution. By the way, he became the first monarch in 1815. On the other sides of this monument, figures of the Netherlands are depicted, who fought for the independence of the country and led the fight against the French.

>На пам’ятнику зображені герби 9 провінцій країни, у відповідності до її конституції 1814 року. Трішки нижче увіковічнений принц Оранський, що присягає конституції. До речі, він став першим монархом у 1815 році. З інших боків цього монументу зображені діячі Нідерладнів, які боролися за незалежність країни та очолили боротьбу з французами.

The Palace of Peace is located right next to this memorial. This is the residence where international courts are held. The building is very beautiful. The architects combined different styles (Romanesque, Gothic), thanks to which it resembles a medieval castle. The feeling of antiquity is complemented by the roof, which is made of gray tiles. The palace has a pointed clock tower. Its height is 80 meters.
Few people know that the idea to build such a palace was born at the First Peace Conference in 1989, and its initiator was Nicholas II, the russian tsar.

>Зовсім поряд з цим меморіалом розташований Палац Миру. Це резиденція, де відбуваються міжнародні суди. Споруда дуже гарна. Архітектори поєднали різні стилі (романський, готичний), завдяки чому вона нагадує середньовічний замок. Відчуття старовини доповнює дах, який зроблений з сірої черепиці. На палаці є гостроконечна годинникова башта. Її висота 80 метрів.
Мало хто знає, що ідея побудувати подібний палац народилася на Першій мирній конференції 1989 року, а її ініціатором був Микола ІІ, російський цар.

The palace has a very beautiful fence with a huge wrought iron gate. A driveway leads to it, with neat lawns around. One gets the impression that the Palace of Peace is a fairy tale. Looking at it, it is difficult to imagine that the most serious court hearings in the world are held here.

 >Палац має дуже красиву огорожу з величезними кованою фігурною брамою. До нього веде під’їзна доріжка, з охайними газонами навколо. Складається враження, що Палац Миру є казковим. Дивлячись на нього, складно уявити, що тут проводяться найсерйозніші у світі судові засідання.

There are many places worth visiting in The Hague. Historical buildings, which currently serve as the parliamentary residence, are especially interesting. There are also many religious institutions here. One of the oldest churches in this city is the Church of St. James. The building was erected in the 14th century, a little later - a 100-meter bell tower. This church is also interesting because it has a crypt interior with tombstones and monuments. Statesmen and even the famous astronaut Huygens are buried here.

>В Гаазі дуже багато місць, де варто побувати. Особливо цікаві історичні будівлі, який нині слугує парламентською резиденцією. Також тут багато релігійних установ. Однією з найстаріших церков цього міста є Церква Святого Якова. Споруда була зведена 14 століття, трішки згодом – 100 метрова дзвіниця. Ця церква цікава ще тим, що тут є склепічний інтер’єр з могильними плитами та пам’ятниками. Тут поховані державні діячі та навіть відомий астронавт Гюйгенс.

Of course, it is very difficult to get to know this city and visit at least a small part of everything interesting in one day. But I hope that one day I will visit The Hague again and stay here for at least a few days.

>Звичайно, за один день дуже складно пізнати це місто та відвідати хоча б малу частину всього цікавого. Та сподіваюся, що колись знову побуваю в Гаазі та затримаюся тут хоча б на декілька днів.
