&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Querida vieja:

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Estoy buscando excusas para escribirte, aunque se me ocurren muchas más para no hacerlo. No está bien hablar de cosas tan personales. Tampoco es bueno mostrar nuestras vulnerabilidades. Tal vez por eso me ha costado empezar esta carta. Pero hoy quiero hacerte saber que estoy orgulloso de tener una madre como tú. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Han pasado casi once años desde que papá murió y nuestro mundo cambió por completo. Perdiste el amor de tu vida y te tocó afrontar el futuro con cuatro muchachos bajo tu cuidado. No poseías ningún trabajo estable o estudios finalizados que aseguraran dicho empleo. A pesar de los contratiempos, seguiste trabajando duro por nosotros y estudiaste enfermería los fines de semana. Y aunque no estabas de acuerdo, mi hermano mayor y yo abandonamos la universidad para trabajar también y ayudar en la casa. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Durante esos años, vivimos penurias y alegrías por igual, aprendiendo a estar más unidos, como quería papá. Su muerte nos hizo apreciar más el calor del hogar y la familia. Nos obligó a hacer de tripas corazón para poder salir adelante y, gracias a eso, ahora eres enfermera y la tercera de nosotros abogada. Estoy orgulloso de ambas, aunque nunca se los diga porque no estamos acostumbrados a expresar esos sentimientos con palabras. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Admiro tu vocación y el buen uso que haces de tus conocimientos. ¿Acaso hay alguien en el barrio que no te conozca por tu trabajo? ¿Existe una nalga o brazo que no hayas inyectado? Cuando algún vecino ha tenido un accidente o enfermado, sin importar los motivos o el tipo de persona que sea, lo has curado y tratado hasta que vuelve a estar bien. Nunca te he escuchado desear mal a otro y hace poco dijiste que por muy mala que sea una persona, nadie debe alegrarse de que se haya enfermado. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Si quiero saber algo sobre una enfermedad, solo debo preguntarte y me das una respuesta inmediata y fácil de entender, por muy complicada que sea la dolencia. Recuerdo las noches que pasabas frente a las enciclopedias, realizando tus trabajos universitarios, absorbiendo el contenido de aquellos libros. Eres tan testadura cuando se trata de aprender algo, que no descansas hasta lograrlo. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nunca te lo he dicho, pero se te da muy bien contar historias. Cada vez que te visito, tienes una nueva anécdota que compartir y la relatas de principio a fin, sin olvidar ningún detalle, formando imágenes claras con tus palabras, añadiendo a veces tu buen sentido del humor. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No te gusta engañar a nadie, odias las mentiras y prefieres comer piedras antes que conseguir dinero por la vía equivocada. Tienes un carácter fuerte, pero eres amable. Haces que todos se sientan cómodos con tu simpatía y te ganas rápidamente el corazón de las personas. No tienes pelos en la lengua para expresar lo que no te parece bien, pero tampoco eres desconsiderada, tosca o insensible. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Disfrutas las cosas simples, como ver películas, estar con amigos, escuchar música, compartir con tus hijos, caminar en las mañanas, cuidar a tus nietos. No tienes ningún tipo de vicio, así como papá tampoco tenía. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Eres madre, enfermera, amiga, maestra, tía, terapeuta, prima, cocinera, hermana, costurera, hija, peluquera, nieta, jardinera, guerrera, valiente, inteligente y capaz de soportar en silencio el peso del mundo, si eso significa bienestar para los tuyos. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Eres mi mayor admiración. La única persona que no me gustaría decepcionar. El motivo por el que en mis noches de tormenta, encuentro la calma solo recordando tu lucha. La razón por que estoy vivo.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Eres <b>Luz Marina</b> en el océano de la vida. Alumbras el camino a quien tiene la dicha de conocerte. Alegras al sol cuando despiertas sonriente. Una madre adolescente, que supo dar el ejemplo, sin maltratos o mentiras. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No eres perfecta, lo sé; aunque tampoco es necesario que lo seas. Hay cosas que no comprendes o ignoras. Hay días en que no estás de ánimos. Hay sueños no cumplidos en tu historial. Hay dolores que no desaparecen. Hay debilidades imposibles de reforzar. Pero conozco muchas más virtudes, fortalezas y razones por las que te amaré toda la vida. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Gracias por todo, vieja.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dear old lady:

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I'm looking for excuses to write to you, although I can think of many more not to. It's not good to talk about such personal things. Nor is it good to show our vulnerabilities. Maybe that's why it's been hard for me to start this letter. But today I want to let you know that I am proud to have a mother like you. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It's been almost eleven years since Dad died and our world changed completely. You lost the love of your life and were left to face the future with four boys in your care. You had no steady job or schooling to secure such employment. Despite the setbacks, you continued to work hard for us and studied nursing on weekends. And although you disagreed, my older brother and I dropped out of college to work as well and help around the house. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;During those years, we experienced hardships and joys alike, learning to be more united, as Dad wanted us to be. His death made us appreciate the warmth of home and family more. It forced us to be strong in order to get ahead and, thanks to that, you are now a nurse and the third of us a lawyer. I am proud of both of you, even though I never tell you because we are not used to expressing those feelings in words. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I admire your vocation and the good use you make of your knowledge. Is there anyone in the neighborhood who does not know you from your work? Is there a buttock or arm that you have not injected? When a neighbor has had an accident or fallen ill, no matter what the reasons or the type of person, you have cured and treated them until they are well again. I have never heard you wish ill on another and you recently said that no matter how bad a person may be, no one should be glad that he has become ill. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If I want to know something about a disease, I only have to ask you and you give me an immediate and easy-to-understand answer, no matter how complicated the ailment may be. I remember the nights you used to spend in front of the encyclopedias, doing your university work, absorbing the content of those books. You are so stubborn when it comes to learning something, that you do not rest until you achieve it. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I have never told you, but you are very good at telling stories. Every time I visit you, you have a new anecdote to share and you tell it from beginning to end, without forgetting any detail, forming clear images with your words, sometimes adding your good sense of humor. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You don't like to cheat anyone, you hate lies and you prefer to eat stones rather than get money the wrong way. You have a strong character, but you are kind. You make everyone feel comfortable with your sympathy and you quickly win people's hearts. You don't mince words to express what you don't like, but you are not inconsiderate, rude or insensitive either. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You enjoy the simple things, like watching movies, being with friends, listening to music, sharing with your children, walking in the mornings, taking care of your grandchildren. You don't have any vices, just like dad didn't have any. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You are a mother, nurse, friend, teacher, aunt, therapist, cousin, cook, sister, seamstress, daughter, hairdresser, granddaughter, gardener, warrior, brave, intelligent and capable of silently bearing the weight of the world, if that means well-being for your loved ones. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You are my greatest admiration. The only person I would not like to disappoint. The reason why in my stormy nights, I find calm just by remembering your fight. The reason why I am alive.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You are <b>Luz marina</b> in the ocean of life. You light the way for those who have the joy of knowing you. You cheer the sun when you wake up smiling. A teenage mother, who knew how to set an example, without mistreatment or lies.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You are not perfect, I know; although you don't need to be either. There are things you don't understand or ignore. There are days when you're not in the mood. There are unfulfilled dreams on your record. There are aches and pains that won't go away. There are weaknesses that you can't shore up. But I know many more virtues, strengths and reasons why I will love you all my life. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Thanks for everything, old lady.
