&nbsp;&nbsp;La familia Hernández es famosa en el Edo. Delta Amacuro, Venezuela, por la controversia que genera cuando se habla de ella. Su historia, como todas las quimeras hechas de palabras, oscila entre la realidad y la ficción, gracias al héroe que la protagoniza. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;Durante el siglo XVI, el general Juan Hernández de Sevilla, arribó en las costas de Guayana. Tenía órdenes directas de sus superiores para matar a cualquier <i>indio</i> que se opusiera a servir a la corona española; pero sus pensamientos eran distintos. Al llegar, se armó con un grupo de diez fieles soldados y viajó por las aguas del Orinoco, hasta lo que hoy se conoce como Tucupita. Su objetivo era hacer la paz en vez de la guerra; sin embargo, la tarea no era fácil. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;Los Waraos, pobladores de aquellas tierras, atacaban a cualquier extranjero sin hacer preguntas. Los veían como una amenaza, gracias al sufrimiento que había vivido su gente por culpa de los invasores de la época. Aun así, el general creía que una muestra de valor, fuerza y resistencia era suficiente para ganar el respeto de los habitantes del nuevo mundo. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;Luego de observar durante días a una de las comunidades de los Waraos, el general y sus hombres salieron del  escondite en cual se encontraban, sin mosquetes ni espadas, las manos en alto como señal de paz, y se acercaron a la tribu que los interceptó de inmediato. Cuando el general le habló a uno de los aborígenes que lo apuntaba con un arco, recibió una flecha en el muslo izquierdo y los diez hombres a su cargo protestaron, pero él los mandó a callar y les recordó el objetivo de la misión. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;Los Waraos esperaban que aquel hombre que hablaba y vestía como los demás invasores se colocara de rodillas y rogara por su vida, pero les sorprendió que se mantuviera erguido, la fiereza con que se dirigía a los otros, el temple de la mirada y que siguiera repitiendo «dejadme hablar con vuestro rey», aunque ellos no lo entendían. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;El general y sus hombres fueron encerrados en celdas construidas con barrotes de caña brava y techos de hojas de palma, atados de manos y pies con fibra de moriche, tan resistente como una soga. A pesar de lo ocurrido, los Waraos atendieron la herida del general con plantas medicinales, y una vez al día les daban a los prisioneros agua y comida para no matarlos de sed o inanición. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;En la tribu estaban impresionados por la actitud de los prisioneros: no eran violentos, no rogaban por sus vidas, no gritaban desesperados por las noches, no escupían a las mujeres que los atendían, y aquel hombre, que parecía el líder de los once, repetía continuamente «dejadme hablar con vuestro rey» aunque su voz fuera cascada y su aspecto deplorable.
 
&nbsp;&nbsp;Tres meses después, el general pudo hablar con el cacique. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;Durante esa larga espera, en el primer mes, logró recuperarse de la herida. Luego dos de sus hombres murieron de fiebre y él y los otros se salvaron de milagro. Gracias a la observación y el discernimiento, aprendieron palabras básicas del lenguaje de los Waraos, y ponían en práctica lo aprendido con las mujeres que los atendían. El general era quien mejor dominaba el lenguaje, principalmente, por la ayuda que recibía de Daura, la mujer que ayudó a curarle la herida. De este modo, él y sus hombres se hicieron famosos en la tribu por ser tan peculiares y el cacique no pudo ignorarlos por más tiempo. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;Dicen que la reunión duró alrededor de dos horas y que después nada fue igual para el general y sus hombres, menos para aquella comunidad de los Waraos. La mayoría desconfiaba de los extranjeros, pero luego de unas semanas de convivencia, aprendieron a confiar en ellos, quienes para ese momento se habían declarado hombres libres.
 
&nbsp;&nbsp;Mientras tanto, el ejército español daba por muerto a Hernández y compañía, ignorando los rumores que había sobre ellos. Muchos decían que Hernández había peleado más de una vez junto a los Waraos, con la esperanza de llegar a un acuerdo de paz luego de hablar con los altos mandos del ejército. Pero esto nunca fue probado. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;Así pasaron los años y el general Hernández tuvo un hijo con Daura, al que bautizaron Yakarí, que en lengua Warao significa «amanecer». El primer mestizo fruto del amor. De los ocho hombres restantes, cinco seguían con vida y también dejaron descendencia. Hernández, por su parte, se aseguró de que su apellido prevaleciera a través de los años y enseñó todo lo que sabía a su hijo, quien se encargó de legar aquellos conocimientos, al igual que sus nietos y tataranietos.
 
&nbsp;&nbsp;Hay quienes piensan que esta historia no es más que un bodrio inventando por los conquistadores españoles para calmar el ímpetu de nuestros aborígenes. Pero qué sentido tendría algo así. Sea verdad o mentira, nadie puede negar que en el Edo. Delta Amacuro existe una familia de apellido Hernández que vive entre las comunidades de los Waraos. Aunque se trate de una quimera.

&nbsp;&nbsp;The Hernandez family is famous in Delta Amacuro State, Venezuela, for the controversy it generates when it is talked about. Its history, like all chimeras made of words, oscillates between reality and fiction, thanks to the hero who is the protagonist. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;During the XVI century, the general Juan Hernández de Sevilla, arrived in the coasts of Guayana. He had direct orders from his superiors to kill any <i>Indian</i> who opposed to serve the Spanish crown; but his thoughts were different. Upon arrival, he armed himself with a group of ten faithful soldiers and traveled the waters of the Orinoco, until he reached what is known today as Tucupita. His objective was to make peace instead of war; however, the task was not easy.

&nbsp;&nbsp;The Waraos, the inhabitants of those lands, attacked any foreigner without asking questions. They saw them as a threat, thanks to the suffering their people had endured at the hands of the invaders of the time. Even so, the general believed that a show of courage, strength and endurance was enough to gain the respect of the inhabitants of the new world. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;After observing one of the Warao communities for days, the general and his men came out of hiding, without muskets or swords, hands raised as a sign of peace, and approached the tribe who immediately intercepted them. When the general spoke to one of the aborigines who was aiming at him with a bow, he received an arrow in the left thigh and the ten men in his charge protested, but he ordered them to be quiet and reminded them of the purpose of the mission. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;The Waraos expected this man who spoke and dressed like the other invaders to get down on his knees and beg for his life, but they were surprised that he stood upright, the fierceness with which he addressed the others, the temper of his gaze, and that he kept repeating "let me speak to your king," although they did not understand him.

&nbsp;&nbsp;The general and his men were locked up in cells made of reed bars and roofs of palm leaves, with their hands and feet tied with moriche fiber, as strong as rope. In spite of what happened, the Waraos treated the general's wound with medicinal plants, and once a day they gave the prisoners water and food so as not to kill them of thirst or starvation.

&nbsp;&nbsp;In the tribe they were impressed by the attitude of the prisoners: they were not violent, they did not beg for their lives, they did not scream in despair at night, they did not spit at the women who attended them, and that man, who looked like the leader of the eleven, kept repeating "let me speak to your king" even though his voice was hoarse and his appearance deplorable.
 
&nbsp;&nbsp;Three months later, the general was able to speak with the cacique. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;During that long wait, in the first month, he managed to recover from the wound. Then two of his men died of fever and he and the others were saved by a miracle. Thanks to observation and discernment, they learned basic words of the Warao language, and put into practice what they had learned with the women who attended them. The general was the one who mastered the language best, mainly because of the help he received from Daura, the woman who helped heal his wound. In this way, he and his men became famous in the tribe for being so peculiar and the cacique could no longer ignore them. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;It is said that the meeting lasted about two hours and that afterwards nothing was the same for the general and his men, least of all for that community of the Waraos. Most were wary of the foreigners, but after a few weeks of living together, they learned to trust them, who by this time had declared themselves free men.
 
&nbsp;&nbsp;Meanwhile, the Spanish army thought Hernández and company were dead, ignoring the rumors about them. Many said that Hernández had fought more than once with the Waraos, hoping to reach a peace agreement after talking with the army high command. But this was never proven. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;In this way, years passed and General Hernández had a son with Daura, whom they baptized Yakarí, which in the Warao language means "dawn". The first mestizo fruit of love. Of the remaining eight men, five were still alive and also left descendants. Hernández, for his part, made sure that his surname would prevail through the years and taught everything he knew to his son, who was in charge of passing on that knowledge, as well as his grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
 
&nbsp;&nbsp;There are those who think that this story is nothing more than a nonsense invented by the Spanish conquistadors to calm the impetus of our aborigines. But what sense would such a thing make? Whether it is true or not, no one can deny that in Delta Amacuro State there is a family with the surname Hernández that lives among the Warao communities. Even if it is a chimera.
