![](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1549764206-048e4d403417?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8&auto=format&fit=crop&w=1331&q=80)

![](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1608095476825-d4e0f916372f?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8&auto=format&fit=crop&w=1170&q=80)

—Me haces mucha falta, mi vida.

—¡Ay, gordo, me haces tan feliz!

Aún no había cenado.

Miguel tied the last bag and weighed it on the scale. Five grams exactly. He left the bag next to the others, on the table where he had his Glock 17. "How crazy," he thought; was concerned about the rumor spreading through the neighborhood.

Her phone rang. Barbara's picture smiled from the device's screen. He answered.

—I was thinking of you my love.

—Yes?

—Yeah. I imagined you wearing a bathing suit.

—Oh, Miguel, you and your stuff, are you coming on Saturday?

—Of course, my love.

—I will wait for you then.

Barbara hung up.

Miguel threw the phone on the couch. He ran both hands over his head and snorted like a horse.

—What time is it? —Emiliano asked from the living room door. He was barefoot and in shorts. He had just woken up.

It will be seven o'clock —answered Miguel after checking the time on his wristwatch.

Emiliano walked to the center of the room, asked for a cigarette and lit it.

—Is that the Colombian's coke?

Miguel nodded.

—Half a kilo of pure adrenaline. I hope to sell it fast.

—Be careful, Miguel. People are still talking.

—I know. Now I can't leave without it. —He grabbed the Glock 17 he had on the table and pointed it at the front door of the house—. And if they come in through there, I'll pump them full of bullets from here.

An hour later he parked his TX 200 in front of the sports field in the neighborhood. He turned off the engine and left the key in the ignition. He remained seated on the motorcycle, with one hand on the bag where he kept part of the merchandise and the other on his waist where he had the gun loaded and ready to be detonated.

![](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1549764206-048e4d403417?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8&auto=format&fit=crop&w=1331&q=80)

The field was packed. That week there was a soccer tournament that would last from Monday through Saturday. Familiar faces were everywhere. One by one they arrived, with money hidden in the palm of their hands, they waved and pretended to talk about the game, until they got their share and left.

Emiliano arrived around half past ten, this time in uniform. All eyes fell on him; most of them knew what kind of policeman he was.

—How are sales going? —he asked after he parked his TX 200 next to Miguel's.

—Casualties. As every Wednesday.

Emiliano took out a cigarette from the box he had in a pocket of his uniform, lit it and offered him one. Miguel accepted and smoked with him. The two of them remained on the seat of their motorcycles, watching the last game of the night, without paying too much attention to what the players were doing, looking everywhere from time to time, watching for any strange movement.

—At the police station they already know about you —said Emiliano—, but the boss hasn't given any orders.

—What did you tell him?

—Nothing. They still don't know we are cousins.

—So why don't they come?

Emiliano was silent for a moment, as if he doubted what he would say next.

—My colleagues think the Osorios will kill you soon and they don't want to be in the middle when that happens. I think the boss thinks the same.

Emiliano finished smoking, started the engine, accelerated and the sounds of the exhaust pipe echoed throughout the place. Before starting he said:

—Today it's my turn to patrol downtown. If things get ugly, call me.

Miguel nodded and listened as the motorcycle drove away, until the hustle and bustle of the field dulled the sound. "They're looking for you," he thought as he took the last puff of his cigarette. He unconsciously put his hand to his waist and looked everywhere. People were coming and going: some faces were familiar... and others not so much. He started the engine and pulled off in the direction of the highway. He needed to run at full speed to clear his mind of the thoughts that made him hesitate.

From Barrera to Tocuyito in five minutes. He turned around at the Tocuyito bridge and returned slowly, as if he wanted to take advantage of the moment to relax; but a police patrol car appeared near the La Encrucijada service station, drove behind him, caught up with him and the officer at the wheel asked him to park on the right.

![](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1608095476825-d4e0f916372f?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8&auto=format&fit=crop&w=1170&q=80)

Miguel accelerated and made a detour in one of the sectors of La Yaguara. The patrol chased him, but he got into the narrow streets of the neighborhood and managed to throw them off. He reached Barrera and stored the motorcycle in the garage of the house that once belonged to his aunt and uncle.

He went into the living room, took off the bag in which he had some of the merchandise, put the Glock 17 on the table and leaned back on the sofa. He took out his phone and dialed Barbara's number. He waited a few seconds, sure she was asleep. It was eleven o'clock at night.

—Hi...

—Hi, why are you calling at this hour, Miguel? You know I have to get up early tomorrow.

—I miss you very much, my life.

—I miss you too; but tomorrow I have classes and an important exam.

—I wanted to know if you would like to go to the beach, Sunday morning, after your birthday.

—Oh, yes, my love, I'd love to! Pick me up tomorrow at noon and we'll talk.

—All right. Make yourself beautiful because I'll take you to eat at the restaurant you wanted.

—Really, Miguel?!

—I always speak in serious, my love.

—Oh, fatso, you make me so happy!

Miguel laughed. Then he said goodbye and hung up. He had met Barbara last month. He had not yet slept with her and hoped to do so the next day, after leaving the restaurant, or perhaps on Sunday, when they would be at the beachfront hut, with the sound of the waves coming in through the window, carefree; even if it meant selling more to finance expenses.

That night he had sold thirty grams. He usually went out to sell on weekends, in the neighborhood parties or in Campo Carabobo, when the consumers had just gotten their paychecks and were eager for a fix. But the Colombian had offered him a good deal, more lucrative than the agreement he had with the Osorio dealer, and he accepted. In this way, he went from earning forty percent of what he sold to keeping seventy percent, and from selling only on weekends to selling every day.

He got up and went to the kitchen. He still hadn't had dinner. He checked the fridge; but there was only water, beer, the remains of a pizza and something else that he couldn't distinguish because of how long it had been stored. He grabbed a beer, uncapped it with a spoon and took a sip. He went back to the living room, put the Glock 17 in his waistband and went out to the street.

@tonyksart ·
Muchos saludos 💚
