As a child, I heard the saying above. I didn't really understand the meaning. However, my mom recited it at several times a week.

Then on the occasion of our visit to the Goodwill Store to purchase our school clothes for the new year, she would repeat it.

Some parents involve their children in the financial aspects of their lives. I never really knew that we were less fortunate than the average family. I just thought we were shopping at another discount store like all families do.

My parents would always tell us that there are people less fortunate than we were, and if we could help, do so. If not, get out of their way and don't harm them.

So I hardly thought of our condition because other families were always on my mind.

But how could we help when we did not have much either? And how could we harm them by not helping. I thought about this many times during my childhood and into adulthood.

My mom would tell us to never give to something to someone you would not want if someone gave it to you. In other words she was telling us not to give away something that's totally useless and would have to be thrown away due to its condition.

Many times I have visited the Goodwill Stores to drop off donations. The workers would complain about people bringing unusable items to donate. Then the workers would have to discard the items place the items in the trash bin.

But they were required to give them a receipt for the items nonetheless.

I came to understand that those actions were not helping. They were only helping the donor. Doing that, I feel, is abusing the system of being able to donate your used goods. It's shameful. I teach my children the same lessons my mom taught me.

It's the same with donating non-perishable food items that are expired. If you wouldn't eat it, then why would you give it to a shelter or pantry to feed it to others.

That is not helping, but potentially harming others.

Because you never know when your trash may be another person's treasure.

I'd like to share a story centered around this message.

![262866.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/justclickindiva/23swXV8TTdSfCAMefZgEG2MHmtqq9ibT4QeFL1viVbJRuMz1ESKLDzDm4NkSDENoFbtBM.png)

In the middle of counting the money from the customer, Belcher stiffened. He frowned as he looked around the store trying to determine the source of the commotion. Screams originating from the back of the thrift store frightened him. He didn't know whether a customer has been involved in an accident.

His primary concern was for the store's customers.

He quickly scanned the entire store. The sounds grew louder, as they traveled from the children's section to another area of the store.

His attention returned to the counter.

*"I'm so sorry, sir. Those children are a handful. Keeping them in check is another full-time job. If you can wait, I'll get them.* The woman sounded flustered.

Belcher nodded so she understood that wasn't his choice. He didn't want to add wait times to other customers.

"No need, ma'am. Let's finish your purchase. You can retrieve them later." He couldn't help but stare at the woman.

Without makeup, she was still striking with her blue eyes sprinkled with silver. They looked like a deep well upon which one could draw. He also noticed she was quiet. Rather plump in her appearance, her round face was beautifully proportioned to her short neck and wide shoulders. Her hair was pinned back in a twist as he'd seen on other women. She could not have been no more than thirty in age.

His eyes travel to her hands. They shook as she opened her purse. Belcher waited patiently as she counted. First, a few dollars; then, various coin denominations.

Nonetheless, she was still short almost five dollars.

She looked up into Belcher's face. His expression startled her. She couldn't decipher his thoughts, as she only noticed him smiling. Was he laughing because she didn't have sufficient funds to pay for her purchases? she wondered.

Embarrassed, she stammered, *"can you a take a few items off my ticket?"*

Belcher didn't hesitate. He quickly reached into his pocket and retrieved a five dollar bill. He completed her purchase, then handed her the change.

Eleanor was stunned. She quickly thanked him, placed her packages in the cart, then turned toward the back of the store to find her children.

She didn't look back. Her heart was pounding. She knew the other customers witnessed the exchange, and that she didn't have enough money to pay for her items.

She rushed from the store. Her head down to avoid any stares.

![rinreMr4T-dividerline-Resized.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/justclickindiva/23tv8hvCs9XJ6jvySDHoq8PqyG4YaAkLbtNT5rMVejff3KMvBDdAtpvqbHwZFE1k5MRdW.png)

Eleanor situated her packages in the trunk, then sat in the car staring out the front window. She didn't want to return home. But she had no alternative.

The children were busy in the back seat. She gently placed her head on the steering wheel and covered her mouth to muffle the cries as tears strolled down her cheek.

Remembering the young man at the counter, they were tears of joy.

She recovered, then pulled from the parking lot and headed to the discount grocers. With the money from the clerk, she could afford food for a few days.

A month later, Eleanor returned to the Goodwill Thrift Store.

*"I'd like to repay you for your kindness."* Arriving before noon, she held up a small casserole carrier.

"My break is in ten minutes." Belcher attempted to hide his surprise, but his smile gave him away. He headed to the employee's room and returned to utensils and a drink.

"Let's sit outside." He didn't know why he felt completely comfortable in her presence and with taking his lunch with her.

"You're a wonderful cook. I haven't had a casserole that delicious since I visited my parents. I'm eating your food and don't know your name."

Eleanor let slip a half-smile. Afterward, they introduced themselves.

Belcher didn't want to stare in his attempts to locate a ring. She wasn't forthcoming with any information. He didn't want to pry.

*"You must think horrible thoughts of me returning not knowing anything about you. You have to believe that this is the first time I've done something like this."* Eleanor's eyes were glossy.

"I believe you. It's much appreciated. You didn't know how badly I needed a home-cooked meal." His attempts at humor didn't take effect.

Eleanor couldn't hold back the tears. *"I'm in a difficult situation I'm trying to resolve. Your kindness reminded me that there are still good and decent men. I just need to look in a the right place. They say there is light on the other side. Right now, I can't see it as I don't know what will happen.* Her voice cracked.

Her eyes were glossy and hands unsteady as she brought a spoonful to her mouth, then returned it to the plate.

"I understand. If you need help, there are resources available. I not only work at the thrift store, but also volunteer at the shelter nearby. If you have a moment, I can give you some information." Belcher kept his brochures handy just for such an occasion.

Belcher sensed something else was going on in this young lady's life. This was his first time distributing the information.

He was just happy he was in a position to do so.

But the last thing he wanted was get involved in a family situation. They may eventually work matters out, he thought.

He also thought about the saying, "one person's trash is another person's treasure." People threw away valuable items each day. Tossing away relationships was no different.

They finished lunch.

Belcher thanked Eleanor again for the food. She thanked him for the brochures.

As he returned to the store, he thought he'd probably never see her again.

![rinreMr4T-dividerline-Resized.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/justclickindiva/23tv8hvCs9XJ6jvySDHoq8PqyG4YaAkLbtNT5rMVejff3KMvBDdAtpvqbHwZFE1k5MRdW.png)

Six months later, Eleanor returned to the Goodwill Thrift Store. This time, she held the children's hands and didn't allow them to roam about.

Busy with customers, Belcher didn't immediately notice her.

*"Hello. How have you been? I'd like to introduce you to my children."* Eleanor smiled broadly at Belcher.

Belcher smiled back. He offered to treat Eleanor and her children to lunch at a nearby restaurant. She accepted.

While dining, she initiated the conversation that ended with them exchanging personal information.

He proudly professed that he had thought about her every day since their casserole lunch. She admitted the same.

On that occasion, she wore a slight tint of makeup and lipstick. The dress she wore, he remembered her purchasing it with the extra money he donated. It didn't cost a lot, but it didn't matter.

He couldn't take his eyes off her. She was stunning.

Although Eleanor looked beautiful to him with it, he looked past that, deeper into her heart.

![262866.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/justclickindiva/23swXV8TTdSfCAMefZgEG2MHmtqq9ibT4QeFL1viVbJRuMz1ESKLDzDm4NkSDENoFbtBM.png)

¿Y cómo podíamos perjudicarles si no ayudábamos?

![262866.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/justclickindiva/23swXV8TTdSfCAMefZgEG2MHmtqq9ibT4QeFL1viVbJRuMz1ESKLDzDm4NkSDENoFbtBM.png)

Belcher no dudó.

No miró atrás.

![rinreMr4T-dividerline-Resized.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/justclickindiva/23tv8hvCs9XJ6jvySDHoq8PqyG4YaAkLbtNT5rMVejff3KMvBDdAtpvqbHwZFE1k5MRdW.png)

No quería volver a casa.

No quiso curiosear.

![rinreMr4T-dividerline-Resized.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/justclickindiva/23tv8hvCs9XJ6jvySDHoq8PqyG4YaAkLbtNT5rMVejff3KMvBDdAtpvqbHwZFE1k5MRdW.png)

"Hola. ¿Qué tal? Me gustaría presentarte a mis hijos". Eleanor sonrió ampliamente a Belcher.

Hello. I'm pleased you stopped by and left your kind words for my story. I appreciate it and your support. Yes, a love story borne out of kindness. I felt that the clerk who worked at the thrift store and volunteered at the center was a compassionate young man who was destined for good things to come his way.

Take care and have a good rest of your week.

This is the best and impactful post I have digested today on Hive blockchain. It is not only thought-provoking, it is also reminder there are people out there needing kindness and care. We might be privileged today, but we don't know what happens tomorrow. Why don't we sow good seeds today so it can be paid forward to another.

And then, what a touching story! It's a good reminder that random acts of kindness can make a big influence on someone's life. Belcher's compassion and readiness to assist Eleanor in her time of need made a significant difference. I like how their chance meeting at the secondhand store led to a deeper relationship and, finally, friendship. Thank you for sharing this beautiful tale.

Hello @esther-emmanuel. How lovely of you to visit and leave such kind words for my story. I appreciate it and am pleased you found it interesting. You know, the most unlikely friendship meet in unexpected surroundings. You never know when it's your turn. Kindness isn't confined to just one space and time. When we open ourselves up to it, that's when you can see it.

Thanks so much for your support. Take care and have a good remaining week ahead.

Take care.

What an inspiring post! I read through and went searching for a link to a contest but found none. 😄 I agree with every point you raised in the first part. It's similar to the golden rule, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

If only we took the golden rule and the words of the Dalai Lama seriously, the world would be a better place. I've always wondered why people give stuff away that they won't eat or use or wear. It doesn't make sense, especially for expired goods. I'm happy you passed down your parents' teaching to your children. That's you making the world better from your corner of it!

And you had to steal your readers' hearts with this evocative story! You beautifully capture the power of kindness and compassion from unexpected places. Eleanor must have been shocked, hence the tears in her car. I know the feeling. These two virtues have immense power to turn a "trash" into a "treasure". I love how Belcher and Eleanor's relationship evolved gently.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these topics and inspiring your readers. I love it! Do take care and have a great day. !PIMP !LUV

Hello @kemmyb. Your comment gave me a chuckle. I am the queen of the contests! But my inspiration comes from images I discover or create myself. So a story stirs that won't subside.

Yes, one can often find a variety of emotions in unexpected places and circumstances. I feel those are likely more genuine than contrived arrangements. At one's lowest point, there is light at the end of the tunnel. One may not be able to see it until a kind hand or heart opens the window.

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your kind words for my story. I appreciate it and your support.

Take care and have a wonderful rest of your week.

I was thinking it would end with, they are my parents, or maybe you and your husband. Anyway, it is a beautiful story.

Hello @myjob. Thank you so much for your visit. Hope you are doing well. I appreciate your kind words for my story. You know, one never knows what another may be going through. That's why it's always good practice to help others or try to give them a smile. The young lady was in a bad relationship. Apparently the information the store clerk gave her helped make the decision she needed to better her circumstances.

As I said, people throw away valuable things all the time. Second chances give the trash an opportunity to become a treasure to someone else.

I appreciate your engagement. Take care and have a good start to your week.

I can't remember if they shared actual percentages or not, but I do remember reading that a very large majority of what is donated to thrift stores like Goodwill is discarded or recycled and not sold in stores. They get so much stuff, even if it is useable it's often not sellable because it's so niche, or they don't have the room for more of common items (and then of course, how many people donate trash). This is one reason why I prefer to use things like Buy Nothing app, or free groups on Facebook and Nextdoor, or to find specific groups that want specific things (like, animal shelters wanting old towels and blankets). That way I know someone got it who wants it, and they didn't have to pay (especially since Goodwill and Salvation Army are ... problematic, without getting into why I don't like them). It takes more time and effort doing it this way, but I think it's worth it.

Yes, at those particular stores, one has to pay.

I usually donate to the Women's Center for women who have left in a hurry seeking shelter. They need all items. I understand that the shelters and centers do give out vouchers to spend at the Salvation Army and Goodwill Stores.

Thanks so much for your feedback. I appreciate the engagement.
