Jeremiah cared not for the howling winds outside as the fireplace blazed wrapping him in its warmth. The crackling of the embers lulled him into a sense of comfort. Even the muffled screams deep inside the dark pit didn't warrant immediately covering his ears. What secrets the embers held these past ten years, he thought tossing the latest edition of the local newspaper in their midst. Like his troubles in a distant land, the incidents would fade as readers moved on to the newest sensationalized trauma. 

He watched as the headline announcing a dead end in the continued investigations incinerated into the muniments of history.

After poking the embers, he returned to his rocker, leaned back, and refreshed his pipe. He then dozed, content in his elusive tactics these past years.

The night's storm did nothing to calm the hunting trophies lining the walls. They peered cautiously with disgust dripping from their mouths at his peaceful sleep. They shuddered as painful tears flowed from their large, round misty eyes. Silently they cried in anguish.

It was the slapping of the shudders that woke Jeremiah. 

Startled, he froze, then scoured the cabin. Glancing upward, he smirked thinking always a delight to add to his collection jutting out from the wall. They evidenced his prowess on the gaming field of conquerors. He smiled again with twisted lips. Several drags and subsequent puffs escaped to form traces of smoke rings above his head.

His property's perimeter was secure from spectators. But a tingling sensation ran the length of his spine. 

The image of his last kill floated across his face. Immediately, flashes of figures knowledgeable about the circumstances of the incident followed. Three times he'd sat razor stiff in the small interrogation room with his back against the stark, white wall while staring into oblivion.

Images of the crime scene sprawled across the table failed to evoke any emotional response. He was much smarter than that. 

The outcome of the interviews landed on his side. His degree in criminal justice favored his release. Confident he'd escaped another execution, he planned for his next victim.

The last file on the end of the table. He frowned as words stamped on top came into focus.

>*"CASE APPROVED FOR REVIEW. FORWARDED TO NEW DNA TECHNOLOGY LAB"*.

Jeremiah jumped up from the rocker, pushing it backward. Veins in his neck rose and throbbed. His pulse quickened. He froze, remembering the tear in the black bag. His pipe dropped from his mouth. 

"Damn," he hissed, nostrils flaring. Rushing to the fireplace, he poked the pile of newspaper, but uncovered nothing but ashes.

He turned, then rushed from the living room to the basement. 

Never mind the storm. Gathering his boots, clothing and tools, he quickly headed outdoors. Slushing in the mud, he wiped away rain beating against his face as he walked briskly several feet toward the edge of his property to the tool shed. He'd work to do tonight, and his axe would assist in dismantling the evidence.

Jeremiah knew little about emerging DNA technology. The flawed science behind it wouldn't hold up, he reasoned. Still, he worried.

Leaving the tool shed, he sped off in his truck. His discarded clothing he burned.

Before daybreak, he returned weary. But his work was completed. No body; no evidence he meticulously calculated. 

For the next six months, he meticulously scanned the newspapers and listened to news reports. He relaxed not hearing any news related to the cold cases. But he promised not to pursue any new yearnings. He decided to stay close to home minimizing temptation. He even taunted with the idea of dating, but eventually dismissed this train of thought.

In the eleventh month, flashing lights and sirens from multiple cars surrounded his cabin.

Deciding not to resist, he went quietly. No need to alert the neighbors. At the precinct, he learned that fingerprints and other evidence from DNA had confirmed him as a suspect in the cold cases involving several deceased persons.

His **denial** was swift. 

His punishment, even swifter.

Al igual que sus problemas en una tierra lejana, los incidentes se desvanecerían a medida que los lectores pasaran al trauma sensacionalista más reciente.

Evidenciaban su destreza en el campo de juego de los conquistadores. Volvió a sonreír con los labios torcidos. Varias caladas y posteriores bocanadas se escaparon formando rastros de anillos de humo sobre su cabeza.

>Jeremiah se levantó de un salto de la mecedora, empujándola hacia atrás. Las venas del cuello se le erizaron y palpitaron. Se le aceleró el pulso. Se quedó helado, recordando el desgarrón de la bolsa negra. Se le cayó la pipa de la boca.

>"Maldita sea", siseó, con las fosas nasales encendidas. Corrió hacia la chimenea, hurgó en la pila de periódicos, pero no descubrió más que cenizas.
>
>Se dio la vuelta y salió corriendo del salón hacia el sótano. 
>
>No importaba la tormenta. Recogiendo sus botas, ropa y herramientas, se dirigió rápidamente al exterior. Resbalando en el barro, se limpió la lluvia que le golpeaba la cara mientras caminaba a paso ligero varios metros hacia el límite de su propiedad, hacia el cobertizo de las herramientas.Tenía trabajo que hacer esta noche, y su hacha le ayudaría a desmantelar las pruebas.
