He was strong, my father. He was also wise for his 100 years. But the forces against him were stronger and battle heavy. I heard he fought back. But age catches up to you. When you've battled your entire life for the right to even live, sometimes the path forward is blurred and slow. You become weary. I've heard that there are always two sides to every battle. The one who survives is allowed to weave the story to champion a more favorable outcome.

That's how I came to know my father. The Devil, some would say. Those in power dared to paint a portrait vilifying him. To this day, the image remains in my consciousness. Sometimes a quiet voice will discover that the lens of others are often blurred green that run rampart. Not enough courage to confront the real threat, they lay blame on those willing to resist. 

At the end of the battle, the forces portrayed as "good and decent" propelled him head first into the bottomless pit. 

He never recovered. 

Yes, he did wrong, my father. And his wrongdoings sentenced me to a life of bondage. But being and doing wrong for the right reason, to me, is honorable. So, my love for him never diminished. 

If I could remember my mother, maybe my life would have evolved in a different direction. 

I only remember being inside my father's head. His thoughts surrounded me like a cocoon.

I woke to the stir of rattling cages along the line. The elderly, sick, and weak were my companions. Once their usefulness ended in the pits, they were tossed aside. If they complained, they were sentenced to a life of misery inside these caged walls. 

As always, dreams of my father filled my spirit until wrapped in a massive headache. Dirt lined the concrete floors of my cage as did old bales of rotting hay. Stench filled my nostrils as it did the others who were forced to inhale daily. 

I turned from the cold bars that held separatists, as they labeled us, captive.

The early morning's golden rays of sun struggled to break through the haze of smoke from the mine.  With hands on the mantle bars, I tried to discern the stir of activity beyond this place. Only five blocks away at the end of the dirt road sat the valley of the pits. The drudge of the earth, some would say. 

My thoughts turned to Roby. A boy of fifteen, he was sentenced to a life of servitude. Forced to work uninterrupted for twelve hours a day, my younger brother wouldn't last too much longer. 

For the past year, I heard the cries of agony. From the depths of the black pits, their wails floated upward, clinging to the dust. Like sick animals, the laborers begged to be released from their bondage. 

As with any oppressed people, the songs of freedom, though low and subtle, were beginning to rise. 

I turned from the window and sat on the small cot. 

Thirty minutes later, evidence of a rat-infested tin tray containing watery leaves, meant to resemble vegetable nourishment, was shoved through the square hole. From early on, my stomach had rejected the bile approved for our consumption. I grabbed the wooden cup half-filled with brown-colored water. Enough to cleanse my face, I thought. I gave it and the brutal guards a stare that voiced my disgust.

They laughed. Finishing their assigned duties to distribute the morning rations, they ignored pleas for help. No medical attention would be registered as they turned to leave. 

The loud banging at the end of the hall signaled the guards' exist. The cranking of the door evidenced the lock turning in place. 

Once departed, the other captives called out. They begged me to retell them the tales of my father. I surmised that they needed hope in this desolate place they didn't expect to leave. As always, I included many adventures of bravery.  His escapades would always involve the rescue of his fellow neighbors with gold and silver coins given as their reward.

As soon as my story was finished, a strange feeling overtook me. I felt faint as if I no longer had control over my body. My temperature began to elevate. I could feel my body getting warmer. My hands. A glow began to consume them. Slowing moving up my arms, it threatened to overtake the top portion of my body. I wanted to scream, but felt no pain.

I backed away slowly until my head connected with the brick wall. Inside here was my captivity. I should have known after all this time how many steps backward it took. Banging against it or any other surface only lead to a headache. I needed to keep in full control of my senses. Somehow I felt my life depended upon me doing so. 

My flesh seemed to peel from my body. My clothes disintegrated. My hair should have been ablaze, but the black tresses infused with red strands grew longer past my shoulder. I could sense my head growing heavier with the weight of an object.

I was unveiling myself, I thought. Memories of my father's words rushed to my thoughts. The inner turmoil. This must be it. Now, I knew how it felt. 

The shackles melted from my feet. My already large, round eyes grew larger. A thick, blue cloak attached itself to my body. On each side of the cloak, small objects, both red and blue colored bonded in place.

I should have been frightened, but somehow I knew, and I wasn't. My father's face appeared before me standing in an exquisite wardrobe I'd never seen. He wasn't alone. Surrounding him were smaller figures. I should say creatures. They had no human form and stood on his shoulders. Others clinged to his hands and feet.

I felt the forces my father described flow toward me. I steadied myself. Was I ready to take on this power? I questioned.

No matter the circumstances that landed me in this desolate place, my destiny was not here. My life was never going to end here. I swore to fight until no fight in me remained. That meant I couldn't die. For some strange reason, I felt that too many depended upon me living.

I heard the chains of bondage rattle, then break. The guards dressed in white with cloths bound tightly around their heads peered through the tiny slits. They unlocked the door and ran to the middle of the room, stopping next to my cell. 

The heat from within intensified.  Flames rushed forth through the bars. The guards backed away quickly shouting and speaking in a language I couldn't understand. Of course, they had nothing within reach to extinquish the fire. Confused and frightened, their faces suggested they'd seen something horrible.

Suddenly, the coolness of the breeze from the opened door ushered in a deep, rich crimson colored veil. It passed my father as if he summoned it. I grabbed hold and pressed my face against its calm. A boiling essence enveloped my body. I could feel the suppressed anguish of centuries bond me to my ancestors. 

My body was no longer mine.

I thought of my life to this point. The anguish and suffering I endured at the hands of others. How could a young lass of eighteen defend herself? Having had no chance at fairness from the accusations, neither friends nor foe stepped forward in my defense. 

Now, I know I didn't need it. My father swore an oath that I didn't. He told me that I didn't need anyone in this physical realm. He spoke of an inner turmoil that was my heritage would come.  Numerous times he would cup my chin in his hand. Those were the time he'd speak of a force that didn't seem real to me. I didn't understand what I was supposed to do with this inner turmoil even if it did come. 

Many times I asked from where would this turmoil come. Then I'd ask who would send it to me. He wouldn't or was forbade to divulge that knowledge.

He'd only state that it would come from a place I didn't yet understand. And I believed my father above all else.  

I tucked this knowledge deep inside. I didn't know what else to do with it. I never felt any different from any other girl my age. Ragged and torn we all  were. But to be unkempt was my punishment.

No more. I stood there in front of my father. He reached out to me. Holding my hands tightly, he guided me through the bars. Although flames extended beyond my body, he was unaffected. 

He smiled.

This was who I was destined to be. I looked upward toward. I knew the world was mine.

I am Asylvia. My brother's senior by three years, I must now go and take my place among those who do wrong for right. I have no choice but to accept the mantle.

I am my father's daughter.

Mi padre era fuerte. También era sabio para sus 100 años. Pero las fuerzas contra él eran más fuertes y la batalla pesada. He oído que se defendió. Pero la edad te alcanza. Cuando has luchado toda tu vida por el derecho a vivir, a veces el camino hacia adelante es borroso y lento. Uno se cansa. He oído que siempre hay dos bandos en cada batalla. El que sobrevive puede tejer la historia para defender un resultado más favorable.

Así es como conocí a mi padre. El Diablo, dirían algunos. Los que estaban en el poder se atrevieron a pintar un retrato que lo vilipendiaba. Hasta hoy, la imagen permanece en mi conciencia. A veces, una voz silenciosa descubrirá que el objetivo de los demás es a menudo un verde borroso que corre por los aires. Al no tener suficiente valor para enfrentarse a la verdadera amenaza, culpan a los que están dispuestos a resistir. 

Al final de la batalla, las fuerzas presentadas como "buenas y decentes" lo impulsaron de cabeza al pozo sin fondo. 

Nunca se recuperó. 

Sí, hizo mal, mi padre. Y sus malas acciones me condenaron a una vida de esclavitud. Pero ser y hacer el mal por la razón correcta, para mí, es honorable. Por eso, mi amor por él nunca disminuyó. 

Si pudiera recordar a mi madre, tal vez mi vida habría evolucionado en otra dirección. 

Sólo recuerdo estar dentro de la cabeza de mi padre. Sus pensamientos me rodeaban como un capullo.

Me desperté con el revuelo de las jaulas que traqueteaban a lo largo de la línea. Los ancianos, los enfermos y los débiles eran mis compañeros. Una vez que su utilidad terminaba en las fosas, eran arrojados a un lado. Si se quejaban, eran condenados a una vida de miseria dentro de estos muros enjaulados.

Como siempre, los sueños de mi padre llenaban mi espíritu hasta envolverlo en un enorme dolor de cabeza. La suciedad cubría los suelos de hormigón de mi jaula, al igual que los viejos fardos de heno podrido. El hedor llenaba mis fosas nasales al igual que las de los demás que se veían obligados a inhalar a diario.

Me aparté de los fríos barrotes que mantenían cautivos a los separatistas, como nos etiquetaron.

Los dorados rayos de sol de la mañana se esforzaban por atravesar la niebla de humo de la mina. Con las manos en las barras del manto, intenté discernir el revuelo de la actividad más allá de este lugar. A sólo cinco manzanas de distancia, al final del camino de tierra, se encontraba el valle de los pozos. El pozo de la tierra, dirían algunos.

Mis pensamientos se dirigieron a Roby. Un chico de quince años, fue condenado a una vida de servidumbre. Obligado a trabajar ininterrumpidamente durante doce horas al día, mi hermano menor no duraría mucho más.

Durante el último año, escuché los gritos de agonía. Desde las profundidades de los pozos negros, sus lamentos flotaban hacia arriba, aferrados al polvo. Como animales enfermos, los obreros suplicaban ser liberados de su esclavitud.

Como cualquier pueblo oprimido, los cantos de libertad, aunque bajos y sutiles, empezaban a elevarse.

Me aparté de la ventana y me senté en el pequeño catre.

Treinta minutos más tarde, la evidencia de una bandeja de hojalata infestada de ratas que contenía hojas acuosas, con la intención de asemejarse a un alimento vegetal, se introdujo por el agujero cuadrado. Desde muy temprano, mi estómago había rechazado la bilis aprobada para nuestro consumo. Cogí el vaso de madera medio lleno de agua de color marrón. Suficiente para limpiarme la cara, pensé. Les dirigí a ella y a los brutales guardias una mirada que expresaba mi asco.

Se rieron. Terminando sus tareas asignadas para distribuir las raciones de la mañana, ignoraron las peticiones de ayuda. No registraron ninguna atención médica mientras se daban la vuelta para marcharse.

Los fuertes golpes al final del pasillo indicaron la presencia de los guardias. El golpeteo de la puerta evidenció el giro de la cerradura en su lugar.

Una vez que salieron, los otros cautivos gritaron. Me rogaron que les volviera a contar las historias de mi padre. Supuse que necesitaban esperanza en este lugar desolado del que no esperaban salir. Como siempre, incluí muchas aventuras de valentía. Sus escapadas siempre implicaban el rescate de sus vecinos con monedas de oro y plata como recompensa.

En cuanto terminé mi relato, me invadió una extraña sensación. Me sentí débil, como si ya no tuviera control sobre mi cuerpo. Mi temperatura comenzó a elevarse. Podía sentir que mi cuerpo se calentaba. Mis manos. Un resplandor comenzó a consumirlas. Subiendo lentamente por mis brazos, amenazaba con alcanzar la parte superior de mi cuerpo. Quise gritar, pero no sentí dolor.

Retrocedí lentamente hasta que mi cabeza conectó con la pared de ladrillos. Aquí dentro estaba mi cautiverio. Debería haber sabido, después de todo este tiempo, cuántos pasos hacia atrás había que dar. Golpear contra ella o contra cualquier otra superficie sólo me provocaba dolor de cabeza. Necesitaba mantener el control total de mis sentidos. De alguna manera sentía que mi vida dependía de que lo hiciera.

Mi carne parecía desprenderse de mi cuerpo. Mi ropa se desintegró. Mi pelo debería haber ardido, pero los mechones negros impregnados de rojo crecían más allá de mi hombro. Podía sentir que mi cabeza se hacía más pesada con el peso de un objeto.

Me estaba desvelando, pensé. Los recuerdos de las palabras de mi padre acudieron a mis pensamientos. La agitación interior. Esto debe ser así. Ahora sabía lo que se sentía.

Los grilletes se derritieron de mis pies. Mis ojos, ya grandes y redondos, se agrandaron. Una gruesa capa azul se adhirió a mi cuerpo. A cada lado de la capa, pequeños objetos, de color rojo y azul, se pegaban en su lugar.

Debería haberme asustado, pero de algún modo lo sabía, y no lo estaba. El rostro de mi padre apareció ante mí de pie en un exquisito armario que nunca había visto. No estaba solo. A su alrededor había figuras más pequeñas. Debería decir criaturas. No tenían forma humana y se colocaban sobre sus hombros. Otras se aferraban a sus manos y pies.

Sentí que las fuerzas que mi padre describió fluían hacia mí. Me estabilicé. ¿Estaba preparada para asumir este poder? me pregunté.

Independientemente de las circunstancias que me llevaron a este lugar desolado, mi destino no estaba aquí. Mi vida no iba a terminar aquí. Juré luchar hasta que no quedara ninguna lucha en mí. Eso significaba que no podía morir. Por alguna extraña razón, sentía que demasiados dependían de que yo viviera.

Oí el traqueteo de las cadenas de la esclavitud y luego su rotura. Los guardias, vestidos de blanco y con telas bien atadas a la cabeza, se asomaron por las pequeñas rendijas. Desbloquearon la puerta y corrieron hacia el centro de la sala, deteniéndose junto a mi celda.

El calor del interior se intensificó. Las llamas salieron disparadas a través de los barrotes. Los guardias retrocedieron rápidamente gritando y hablando en un idioma que no podía entender. Por supuesto, no tenían nada al alcance para apagar el fuego. Confundidos y asustados, sus rostros sugerían que habían visto algo horrible.

De repente, el frescor de la brisa procedente de la puerta abierta hizo entrar un velo de color carmesí intenso. Pasó junto a mi padre como si lo hubiera invocado. Me agarré y apreté mi cara contra su calma. Una esencia hirviente envolvió mi cuerpo. Pude sentir cómo la angustia reprimida de siglos me unía a mis antepasados.

Mi cuerpo ya no era mío.

Pensé en mi vida hasta ese momento. La angustia y el sufrimiento que soporté a manos de otros. ¿Cómo podía defenderse una joven de dieciocho años? Al no tener ninguna oportunidad de ser justa con las acusaciones, ni amigos ni enemigos salieron en mi defensa.

Ahora sé que no lo necesitaba. Mi padre juró que no lo necesitaba. Me dijo que no necesitaba a nadie en este reino físico. Habló de una agitación interior que era mi herencia vendría. En numerosas ocasiones me cogía la barbilla con la mano. Esas eran las veces que hablaba de una fuerza que no me parecía real. No entendía qué debía hacer con esta agitación interior, incluso si llegaba.

Muchas veces me preguntaba de dónde vendría esta agitación. Luego preguntaba quién me la enviaría. Él no quiso o se le prohibió divulgar ese conocimiento.

Sólo afirmaba que vendría de un lugar que yo aún no comprendía. Y yo creía a mi padre por encima de todo.

Me guardé este conocimiento en lo más profundo. No sabía qué más hacer con él. Nunca me sentí diferente de cualquier otra chica de mi edad. Desaliñadas y desgarradas estábamos todas. Pero estar desaliñada era mi castigo.

No más. Me quedé de pie frente a mi padre. Él me tendió la mano. Agarrando mis manos con fuerza, me guió a través de los barrotes. Aunque las llamas se extendían más allá de mi cuerpo, a él no le afectaban.

Sonrió.

Esto era lo que estaba destinado a ser. Miré hacia arriba. Supe que el mundo era mío.

Soy Asylvia. Tres años mayor que mi hermano, ahora debo ir a ocupar mi lugar entre los que hacen el mal por el bien. No tengo otra opción que aceptar el manto.

Soy la hija de mi padre.
