Janelle scanned online, engrossed in the search results for the wealthy industrial Carmichel family while watching Annette pace back and forth.  

The scandal involving her parents took new twists and turns monthly. And journalists weren't too far behind to report up-to-date coverage. That the public desired to see them reduced low now spread to the entire country. Their wealth and influence caused a stir in social and political circles as speculation of wild swingers' soirees ran rampant.

The elegantly dressed Annette paused to stare as the news anchor continued his salacious account of the horrific death at her family estate during one of the parties. Suggestions that a family member was responsible spread like wildfire.
 
"A source close to the family," the anchor announced.

*"I hope you got paid handsomely for your betrayal!"* Annette shouted.

"Don't be so dramatic. Your family can't keep their mouths shut. Why blame me? I've been loyal to you and those idiots siblings for years. They should rally around your patriarchs as a united, silent front. Can't blame me if their loose lips are sinking the ship!"

Although angered, Annette momentarily reigned in her suspicions. But only she and her parents knew of their latest decision to move away.

*"You were my anchor; my lifeline. I thought I could trust you. You're **not my friend**." Annette's long pause was ignored. "I Now that I look back, I can see that you never were. You just pretended to get close to my family gathering inside information."*

Janelle knew the familiar ramblings, so she fell silent. When Annette was worked up into a frenzy, she would spill even more.

Annette eased down onto the couch. Janelle placed her arms around her best friend. A moment of tenderness and compassion as Annette leaned on her shoulder and burst into tears.

Janelle felt the moisture soak into her blouse. Weakling, she thought. Her temporary compassion abated.

She extricated himself from Annette's arms. She knew exactly what Annette needed. In the kitchen, she paused while preparing her friend's favorite Chamomile tea.

For the past twenty years, Janelle tended to her friend's emotional episodes with grace. Immediately, she remembered the exact day that her feelings were put in their place and her status of inferiority alluded to.

Annette's outburst interrupted her reflective thoughts. 

*"Now, I don't know what direction to take. My parents are asking me to uproot my children and move out of the country. Focus has now shifted to one of the grandchildren. I won't be able to hold it together if one of my children were suspect."*

Janelle knew about the family's proposed move, but the other was extra.

Janelle calmly proposed alternatives for Annette to consider while her ire intensified. No backbone, she sneered, grating her teeth. If they endured the troubles we common folks were forced to everyday, they couldn't survive. If I had the money, power, and influence she enjoys without having ever struggled to acquire it, I certainly wouldn't be in the position her friend so often found herself, she reasoned.

I have real people problems, mortgage, medical expenses, and other taxing issues, while her only worry was that the news media would discover their family secrets. She moved away from the bar opening and shook her head violently as if casting off total nonsense.

She truly loved her friend. But the realm she operated in felt unrealistic, not normal.

She shut off the tea maker and brought Annette a hot cup. It seemed to sooth her frustrations.

Once calm, Janelle readied herself to leave. "I need to get going. An appointment at my son's school. she lied.

Janelle pulled into a parking lot. The extra money was sorely needed. And she hated asking Annette for a handout.

She pulled out her phone and dialed the coded number.

"Hello. Are you ready for this?"

What a fascinating story! This Carmichael family is intriguing, reminiscent of most wealthy family surrounded by scandals. Janelle and Annette are polar opposites; one is rich, the other struggles financially. One is reasonable and courageously faces her challenges, the other breaks down easily and complains about something as slight as family secrets being exposed, hence Janelle's irritation.

The lines between privilege and reality is blurred here. I understand Janelle's thought comparing their situations but in reality, it's easy to think she can cope if she were Annette. If their roles were reversed, Janelle would behave just like Annette if not worse. 

Sadly, Janelle is going to sell some family secrets for money! Will there be a continuing part to this story? Janelle's call is cryptic and makes me wonder if she'll go through with selling Annette's secrets. Beautifully written as always! Have a wonderful weekend. !PIMP

Yes, there will be a continuation. In my haste, I forgot to place "continuing at the end". It's easy to judge from the outside. And it's true that perhaps Janelle won't be able to cope. But then I think of the personalities involved. Not being privileged in your upbringing comes with it a knowledge and fortitude others usually don't have if they haven't encountered any struggles.

Let's see if the differences in personalities will clash or reconcile with am amicable solution. Annette may turn out to be opposite of her character portrayal. Sometimes one just has to dig deep within themselves to find their true nature if hidden.
