Falling. Pursing. Creatures. Losing one's birthday suit. Those episodes Kathryn analyzed and cast aside long ago once the pillow embraced her head and transported her consciousness into the waiting realm of nonsensical delirium.

However, this particular elusive ephialte has visited her for as long as she could remember. 

Grasping its meaning has only left her skeptical of her own reality once night ends. Afterward, a few days of headaches and this encompassing feeling of an inner struggle were her only reminders of the adventures.

Kathryn woke that particular Saturday morning and lay in bed for a moment attempting to dissect the meaning once more. My heart beat faster than usual after emerging from a night's episode of this struggle. A tug of war is best she can compare this feeling. 

She rose slowly and freshened up, making sure to take medication to relieve her neck stiffness and headache.

Suddenly, a series of several low guttural growls that seemed to originate from her back yard, waffled through the dining room. 

Unlatching the sliding door and stepping onto her porch, the sounds grew louder as she glanced around the yard.

A terrifying scene was unfolding. Next to her back fence, a pack of dogs, whose breed could only be described as wild, was standing in a circle. In the center, there appeared an ordinary pet dog so tiny it could be seriously harmed in one single attack.

The pack was closing in. She screamed. 

Hoping the pitch in her voice would scare the pack off, she screamed again. At the same time, she was hoping neighbors on either side or behind her house would respond. To her dismay, no one came.

She ran back to the house and hurriedly shut the door. Her hands shook as she frantically called animal control.

She dared not step outside again for fear they would notice and turn to rush toward her.

Then, she heard the most horrifying sound as the dogs rushed in to attack.

Ten minutes later, animal control still hadn't responded. She realized that not only would she have a dead dog in her back yard, but the pack of wild dogs was roaming the neighborhood.

She took a deep breath and stepped outside. The only weapon she had were several medium-sized rocks in her flower bed surround. 

Staying close to the edge of her porch, with all her strength, she reached down and hurled as many rocks as she could quickly lift in their direction. 

In her frenzy, she didn't realize the dogs entered through a hole they'd enlarged at the end of the yard across the fence. The vacant house could have been their hiding place.

From behind, two of her neighborhoods came running. With their help, miraculously, the pack disbanded and hurried back through the hole. A few moments later, animal control arrived.

She and her neighbors approached with caution. They realized the smaller dog had a large object in it mouth resembling an unusual bone.

The dog lay still on its side. Unfortunately, she realized it was too late to save him.  

A foul odor drifted toward them as they drew close. Animal control took possession of the small dog. 

They called the police to investigate discovery of the bone. "We'll take it to be examined. On first look, it appears to be human. Then, we'll return to canvas the area for any signs of foul play." The officer assured Kathryn they would follow up in light of the foul odor unearthed with the bone.

"Thanks to Kathryn's Herculean efforts in attempting to rescue the small dog, others in the neighborhood can now be on the lookout for the vicious pack. And, we probably wouldn't have uncovered another possible crime," the animal control officer said loudly, nodding toward her neighbors and the police.

Kathryn finally released her emotions. She felt a rush of tears well up. "I was scared as heck, but I didn't think twice about trying to help." 

The police chief glanced again at her yard. Stranger than fiction, he thought, as he shook his head.

That night and for some time to come, that elusive ephialte declined to visit Kathryn's sleep.
