Making Sense Out Of Nonsense

Life is interesting. If you’re familiar with my posts, you’ll know that I often talk about how cruel and complex life can be. Life can be full of ups and downs, and it's often easy to get caught up in the difficult moments. But sometimes, life is beautiful. It surprises us with beautiful, cool, nice, and unexpected things. Even in the midst of sad happenings, a glimmer of hope can make you smile and brighten your day. This is what happened to me today. Despite being busy with schoolwork and feeling the pressure of upcoming exams, I was able to find a moment of laughter and joy. For a moment, I forgot about my pain. It was beautiful. It was magical.

This morning, I woke up very early and rushed to class. I got to class at exactly 9:55 AM. As I hurried into my African Poetry class, my professor rushed in just before the clock struck at 10:00 AM. With a smile on his face, he said, “Today, we are going to be analyzing Fela songs, Bob Marley songs, and Kizz Daniel songs.” I was a bit taken aback by this announcement. After all, I had expected to focus on African poems, not songs. He explained that songs can also be regarded as poems because they contain elements of poetry; rhymes, structure, form, and so on.

The lecturer brought out his phone and connected his Bluetooth to a Public address system. He played the songs while we listened to them. The atmosphere was different- filled with warm waves of laughter and soft smiles. I must say, in the music world, Fela and Bob Marley are legends. After listening to the songs, we analyzed; the central ideas (themes), the singer’s background, and the historical background surrounding the poem. After analyzing Fela and Bob Marley’s songs, we moved on to Kizz Daniel. I was more surprised when the lecturer announced that we would be analyzing Kizz Daniel’s “Twe Twe.” Kizz Daniel is a Nigerian Hip Hop artist. Presently, his song “Twe Twe” is on the lips of Nigerians and even people outside the shores of Nigeria. Of course, I love this song, but I didn’t see it as “analyzable.” “It is a song one can dance to. Just a jumble and mumble of meaningless words.” This was my take on the song before we analyzed it.

**MAKING SENSE FROM NONSENSE**

Sometimes, we are confronted with things that seem like pure nonsense, whether subjects, ideas, or situations that don’t make sense to us. However, if we take the time to step back and really look at the big picture, we might be surprised to find that there is sense in “nonsense.” As I mentioned, I didn’t think I’d ever analyze Kizz Daniel’s “Twe Twe.” Before today, I always danced and vibed to the song, who knew there’d be a deeper meaning to it? To get a better understanding of the poem, you can listen to the music and check the lyrics out on the internet.

To understand a literary work; song, poetry, drama, or other literary works, one must first understand the background of the writer/author/singer and the background surrounding the literary work. Kizz Daniel is a Nigerian who grew up on Nigerian soil. His song “Twe Twe” explores the present state of the country. His country is in shambles; the political, economic, and all other sectors are bleeding.

The opening line of the song is, “woni things won/ woni omo won.” Which means everything is super expensive. Currently, the currency if the currency is going down the drain which is taking a toll on the country and its citizens. Despite this, citizens are still struggling. With a smile on their faces, they are facing the hardship. They are dancing (twe twe), hoping for a miracle from above. Of course, not everyone would see the literal meaning. As lovers of the literary world, we should be able to analyze a literary work, however it presents itself.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds like an interesting class indeed. I didn't take any classes like this in Uni, but I definitely would've loved this one. I think your lecturer was super awesome for this.

I don't normally analyze songs until I'm in a bad mood. Lol, that's when I have time to pay attention to lyrics.

Hey, my guy. I'm really sorry for not replying. Exams got my hands tied. Yeah, man. This man is a lecturer, which explains why he chose this song. Lol. I don't analyze songs at all. This course brought out the “beast in me.”
