Matthew woke up, the clock ticked insistently at 7:00 am, so turning off the alarm and still sleepy, he went to the kitchen and turned on the coffee pot and loaded it with water, sugar and coffee. The aroma soon permeated the whole house, like a veil of aromas that also suggested garnishing with cinnamon and vanilla, so giving free rein to the imagination Matthew just followed his instinct and within minutes his cup of coffee was ready.

The first sip ran through every papilla in his mouth, he felt as if his jaw tightened and his senses awoke, he inhaled deeply the rich aroma, savored the smell in his mouth and thought: How did such a special drink get here?

Today Matthew had to visit his grandfather, whom he used to visit twice a week, this week his grandfather had been a little sick so he had been going every day, in a thermos he kept some coffee to share and went to get ready; a few minutes later with the car on he headed to what for him would be the best day with his grandfather.

When he arrived, he saw his grandfather with a common sadness in his eyes, although this time, in his hands a strange coffee can, one of those that look like relics of the past. Matthew normally didn't do much research into his grandfather's past, and simply concentrated on him having a great day, so his intention was to do the same this day as well, so that his sadness would disappear.

He got to where his grandfather poured him some coffee and as he tried a topic of conversation to brighten up the afternoon his grandfather said, "You know Matthew, today I was looking at old pictures I saved long ago in this can, it's a story you should know even though it's nothing cheerful."

After a sip of coffee, and savoring the flavors, he closed his eyes and as if on an astral trip he said to me:

*You know, since always coffee has been a very coveted beverage, but it is not possible to talk about its history without recognizing that there has been blood in its trajectory; today, one gets up and opens the shelf without much difficulty takes out some coffee and prepares it; But have you ever thought about its history, and not that of the bean that reached our tables in an easy way, but the history that today is not told, that of the lives at the expense of coffee?*

*Look Matthew, when I was young I took these photographs, I was working in my 20's for a small newspaper in the city, and I began to cover a story about coffee, I had to get every detail and secret in the preparation of coffee, from the selection of the seed to plant to the selection of the bean to grind it.*

*The story never came to light, because the human exploitation that was seen in the coffee plantations was such that I never delivered those photographs. In those years I only worried about those workers receiving a decent salary, and slavery was so common, dear Matthew, that I was offended because they did not receive a salary, when in fact they should not have been there.*

*Today there are machines that do the work that the slaves did, but surely if it were not so, slavery would still exist, do you know why? Because companies as big as coffee companies will always be protected by governments that will ignore human rights in order to maintain them.*

That day Matthew answered his doubt, and then he talked to his grandfather and asked him about his life story, and he understood that his grandfather was not sad because of the past, but because his life was about to end and no one would know his past, but now his grandfather would share all his story with him and would continue living generation after generation.
