# Brutality in Spain: How should we respond to statist violence?

Folks in Catalonia want to secede. Secessionists occupy polling stations to keep them open for voting. Spain government says "fuck off, you get no vote. We'll beat the shit out of you." This is my understanding of the situation thus far. Any Steemians in Spain want to comment here? Your input would be much appreciated

# Is self-defense against law enforcement justified? Of course it is.

Having a badge and a magic special uniform does not render one a superior being to whom morality is non-applicable. Legality does not equate to morality. What the National Socialist party did to Jews, Poles, and myriad others in Nazi Germany was all "legal." Obviously, the belief that a select group of humans can *create morality arbitrarily* by scribbling on pieces of paper called "legislation" undercuts the whole point of morality and ethics--namely, to have an immovable mooring upon which to base our philosophies, societies, and laws.

Right now, many people wish to defend themselves, but see the massive power of the state, and the brutal force its agents seem to have almost zero qualms about employing, and say, understandably, *Nah. Fuck that. I don't wanna die.* As they say, "give a man a hammer and everything around him suddenly starts to look like a nail." This is why our revolution is a philosophical one. Individuals must "wake up" to the truth of individual self-ownership as an immutable, nature-conferred reality and right, and then disobey.

The more people disobeying, the less power the state has. It is, however, first and foremost, a puerile, childish, and violent religion to be grown out of through a philosophical and fundamental paradigm shift *in the individual.* Unless we are united in principle, disobedience often results in what at times seems to be only a waste of human life. Play your game smart, and decide where your line in the sand is. There's no need to mug yourself by trying to be a martyr by, say, disobedience that will end up with you in a cage and your family in even more trouble and more vulnerable to the statist goons. Every man must choose his own battles. Many do not pay taxes. Others do. Either way, the coercion and violence is being initiated by *the state.*

That said, the fact remains that it is your nature-conferred (God-given, if you like) right to defend your property and person. Your body. Your self. For a more in-depth explanation see this very controversial and important video by @larkenrose. There is no reason this should be a "controversy," however. The state does not create morality. Cops and agents of the state are simply humans that, whether implicitly or explicitly, consciously or unconsciously, view robbing other individuals of life, liberty, and property as a legitimate means to exist and make a living. How pathetic. What a decidedly *sub-human view* of reality.

Recently a friend in Panama has turned me on to some new coins that seem promising, and are still quite affordable when it comes to scooping up a handful or five. These coins include:

* VERTCOIN (VTC)
* BAT (Basic Attention Token)
* CIVIC (CVC)

What about you? What still-affordable coins are you excited about. Feel free to start a discussion in the comments! Wouldn't it be nice to be financially set when those "cheapies" you bought five months ago shoot through the roof??? Hell yeah, it would.

# Finally, in just a little over a week, I'll be heading to Nagano to visit @nicksikorski down on the farm!

Fellow steemian @nicksikorski is a certified permaculturalist and solid Voluntaryist brother also residing here in Japan. He is an admin for the [Voluntary Japan Facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/VoluntaryJapan/) as well (give us a "like"!). Nick is starting up his own independent farm deep in the boonies of Nagano, and I am gonna go down for a couple days and see if I can't help him clear out some weeds and brush and learn me a thing or two. Excited. I'll hopefully be posting some updates on the trip here on Steem.
