### Walking around the Marine Department pier by the river, the statue of a foreigner caught my attention.  I took my old friend for a walking tour of Chinatown via the old Chinese community of ‘Small Market’ (or Talad Noi).  The big old trees near the river bank attracted my attention so we walked over to take photos of the trees. We took a shortcut which took us on to the Marine Department Pier which has been recently renovated and transformed into a mix between old Thai and Chinese architecture.  This pier stood up with bright red interior and decoration for the Chinese New Year’s celebration.

We went upstairs to pay respect to the Buddha statue and took photos of the river and the old banyan tree in the courtyard of the Marine Department.  We discovered the strange statue of a foreigner in the courtyard.  It was Captain John Bush, the first Englishman who became the Harbour Master during King Rama IV (King Mongkut)‘s reign.

We could also see the other old trees near the Siam Commercial Bank and the construction of a new wall by the river.

Captain Bush statue was placed in front of a antique rowing boat in very good condition; it was placed inside a glass box to protect it from the weather and theft.  Captain Bush played a very important role in establishing a modern and structured system of managing piers, ports, ship yards, National shipping fleets including the collection of excise duty on foreign merchant’s cargos.

Captain John Bush arrived in Siam in 1857 and signed the royal contract on 5th August 1959, so the 5th August has become the Marine Department’s Day. Buddhist ceremonies and remembrance ritual would be performed on that day every year. King Rama V bought the Chinese merchant’s house and land by the river to build a new office for the Marine Department where Captain bush continued to work for Siam till his retirement.  He became one of the richest Englishman in Siam as he also worked at the Bangkok Dock Company. His house used to stand by the river where the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel now locates; so his house was less than five minutes’ walk to his office. Nowadays, the narrow road passing in front of the Portuguese Embassy and this hotel is known as Captain Bush Lane.

Being near the river, people believe that Naga (Water Snake deity) could be living in the cave under the river.  So, a Naga statue had been established in the courtyard so people could pay respect and place their offerings.

A suitable size Spirit-House was installed under the old tree so people could offer food and fruits to all the spirits living on this tree.  The two smaller Naga statues were added as people believes that there might be more than one Naga protecting this stretch of the river.  We believe that all Nagas could travel everywhere via the river systems and lakes. But each Nagas had been assigned locations which they had to look after and protect until their turns for reincarnation into a higher dimension.

Captain Bush was knighted as Admiral Sir John Bush and had a Thai title of Phraya Wisuth Sakoradith. Captain Bush died in 1905 and was buried in the Protestant Cemetry in New Road (Chareonkrung Road).  An obelisk marked his grave with the inscription composed by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V).

วันนี้เราจะเล่าเรื่องการเดินไปถ่ายรูปต้นไม้เก่าแก่ที่กรมเจ้าท่าที่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา และเราบังเอิญไปเจอรูปปั้นของกัปตันบุชมที่กรมเจ้าท่าด้วย ทำให้นึกขึ้นได้ว่ามีฝรั่งชาวอังกฤษมาเป็นข้าราชการในสยาม และอยู่ช่วยงานราชการถึงสองแผ่นดิน เราพาเพื่อนเก่าเดินเลาะไปทางริมน้ำ เพื่อไปถ่ายรูป เราก็ไปโผล่ที่ท่าน้ำของกรมเจ้าท่าพอดี เราแปลกใจมากที่เห็นเขาปรับปรุงท่าเรือใหม่หมด ด้วยสถาปัตยกรรมไทยโบราณผสมกับจีน ข้างในทาสีแดงสดและมีการใช้โคมแดงของจีนเพื่อต้อนรับเทศกาลตรุษจีนด้วย เรากับเพื่อนขึ้นไปที่ชั้นสองเพื่อกราบพระพุทธรูปและพระสารีริกธาตุเพื่อความเป็นศิริมงคล แล้วก็มองดูวิวแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาสักพัก เราอดคิดไม่ได้ว่าปีหน้าบ้านเมืองจะเป็นอย่างไร มองวิวกรุงเทพแล้วก็อดหวั่นใจไม่ได้ เรามองเห็นต้นไม้ใหญ่ที่ริมแม่น้ำและ ที่อยู่ในธนาคารไทยพาณิชย์ด้วย

เราเดินลงไปถ่ายรูปต้นไม้ต้นใหญ่ที่ข้างล่าง เราจึงสังเกตเห็นรูปปั้นของกัปตันบุช เขาเป็นชาวอังกฤษที่มาเยือนเมืองสยามในปี 2400 และตกลงเซ็นสัญญารับราชการในสมัย ในหลวงรัชกาลที่4 ในวันที่ 5 สิงหาคม 2402 ดังนั้นวันที่ 5 สิงหาคมจึงเป็นวันคล้ายวันสถาปนากรมเจ้าท่า กัปตันบุชทำงานในหน้าที่ถึง 30ปี และกลายเป็นฝรั่งที่มั่นคั่งที่สุดในเมืองสยาม บ้านเก่าซึ่งอยู่ติดริมน้ำตอนนี้ได้กลายเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงแรมเชอราตันในปัจจุบัน และถนนที่วิ่งผ่านหน้าสถานฑูตโปรตุเกส และโรงแรมก็เป็นที่รู้จักกันว่าถนนกัปตันบุช ในหลวงรัขกาลที่5 ไปได้ซื้อที่และบ้านของเจ้าสัวเส็งริมน้ำข้างตลาดน้อย เพื่อสร้างสำนักงานของกรมเจ้าท่า ทำให้กรมเจ้าท่าสามารถดูแล ท่าเรือ อู่ต่อเรือ ท่าเทียบเรือ และการคมนาคมทางนํ้าได้อย่างสะดวก

กัปตันบุชได้ทำคุณประโยชน์ให้แก่เมืองสยามอย่างมาก หลังจากที่เราต้องยอมทำตามสนธิสัญญาบราวริ่งในปี 2398 แล้ว เรือสินค้าของชาวตะวันตกก็เจ้ามาจนหนาแน่นในแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา จึงต้องมีการจัดระบบการเก็บค่าด่านและภาษีนำเข้าสินค้าจากต่างประเทศ การจัดการท่าเทียบเรือ ท่าเรือ อู่ซ่อมต่อเรือ และการเดินเรือในแม่น้ำด้วย กัปตันบุชมได้รับตำแหน่งและชื่อเป็นภาษาไทยว่า พระยาวิสูตรสาครดิฐ กัปตันบุชกเสียชีวิตในปี 2448 และศพถูกฝังที่สุสานโปรเตสแตนต์ที่ถนนเจริญกรุง โดยมีคำสดุดีบนแผ่นศิลาที่แต่งโดยในหลวงรัชกาลที่5ด้วย นับว่าเมืองสยามโชคดีที่มีฝรั่งที่มีความสามารถมาช่วยในยามที่มีความจำเป็น ที่ต้องมีคนที่มีความสามรถพิเศษหรือเฉพาะทาง เรากับเพื่อนเดินถ่ายรูปต้นไม้ และวิวแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ทำให้เรารู้สึกโชคดีมากที่เกิดเป็นคนไทย เพราะเมืองไทยมีของดีและสิ่งวิเศษที่หาที่อื่นไม่ได้จริงๆ
