### Recently I discovered very interesting street art and graffiti along an old canal in Bangrak district of Bangkok. I had previously visited the Boat Temple (Wat Yannawa) to see sunset by the river. I heard about this effort of the local businesses and authority on improving the landscape of the area; there were many leading street artists and young volunteers joining this project. So, I was curious to see how serious and successful their combined efforts had resulted. I realised this would call for quite a big budget and cooperation from the local community.

The old canal was in a very bad shape as most canals have been neglected after transporting by cars had replaced boats.  Most canals were blocked and the old systems of canals and rivers were destroyed by filling them with earth to build new infrastructure for roads and motorways. I had seen several old canals with black water, dead fish and rubbish. It is rather sad that most people are still very irresponsible and could not understand the impact of pollution on our environment. We still let untreated water down the drain to pollute the waterways and main rivers. Nowadays people could not catch fish and shrimps along the canals like in the old days.

The canal is just opposite Yannawa Temple on New road. There are steps leading to the narrow path along the canal.  The street art and graffiti could be seen on both sides of the canal on walls and doors or people’s houses. This project had also cleaned up the polluted canal making it much cleaner but the water quality could not be much improved as the canal connection to the river had been blocked long time ago.

The local authority does not put up any sign to locate the new street art venue.  I had to rely on my hunch that it is along a canal near Wat Yannawa.  Looking at the map, there are two canals in this area.  So I went to the nearest canal first. Luckily,that was spot on though it seemed very unlikely as the path along the canal is so narrow that only one person could walk by easily. I almost fell into the canal twice trying to capture my photos.

Looking up and to the left of the canal, the Ghost Tower could be seen in stark contrast to the old houses along the narrow path.

This project turned out very well judging by the quality of street art and the length of the paintings. You could walk till the end of the canal which is about one kilometer long, the art exhibition is quite staggering in terms of efforts and collaboration.

The quality of water in the canal has become much improved; the colour is green instead of black and smelly.  But there were some rubbish in the canal and several dead fish floating around.  Who would imagine that many years ago, people could use water from this canal for cooking and bathing. I could remember seeing kids jumping into canals along my way to school. I did envy these kids with houses by the canal; they could swim and have good fun in front of their houses.

I did see people fishing with fishing nets by the rivers. People just washed their clothes and having a bath in the rivers everywhere. They hung their clothes to dry in branches of big trees along the river.  These people often took their afternoon naps by the river, waiting for their clothes to dry.  We could buy Thai sweets and noodles from vendors coming around in small rowing boats along canals. Nowadays, the modern world seems to lack all the homely charms of the past simple lifestyle when life was much slower, happier and more peaceful.

เราได้ยินข่าวว่ามีโครงการปรับภูมิทัศน์ในคลองใกล้วัดยานนาวา และมีการขอควมาร่วมมือศิลปินและอาสาสมัครที่เป็นนักวาดภาพมาช่วยพัฒนาพื้นที่ตามคลองให้น่าดูและสวยงามมากขึ้น งานนี้ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากธุรกิจในท้องที่และกลุ่มอื่นๆอีกหลายกลุ่ม พอดีเราแวะไปไหว้พระที่วัดยานนาวาเมื่อเร็วๆนี้ แต่เราไม่เห็นป้ายบอกทางว่ามีสถานที่ท่องเที่ยว หรือแลนด์มาร์คใหม่ที่ไหน เราก็เปิดแผนที่ดูว่าแถววัดมีคลองเหลือกี่แห่ง เราเห็นมีสองที่ ก็เลยตัดสินใจไปคลองที่ใกล้ที่สุดก่อน ซึ่งก็โชคดีมาก เดินไปหน่อยเดียวแล้วข้ามถนนไปก็เจอคลองยานนาวาที่มีทางเดินแคบๆ เดินตามทางไปสองนาที เราก็เห็นภาพเขียนสีสดใสตลอดทางเรียบไปตามคลอง เราก็เดินสำรวจไปช้าๆ ทางเดินแคบมากเราเกือบตกคลองสองครั้ง

ผลดีของโครงการนี้คือ เขาต้องบำบัดนํ้าเสียในคลอง ทำให้น้ำที่เคยเป็นสีดำเริ่มใสเป็นสีเขียว กลิ่นเหม็นก็หายไป ชาวบ้านแถวนี้คงนอนสบายมากขึ้น ขยะในคลองก็มีแต่ของใหม่ที่คนมักง่ายโยนลงไปในคลอง นํ้าในคลองบางช่วงเริ่มเน่าเสีย เราเห็นปลาตัวโตๆตายหลายตัว มันแย่ตรงที่คลองตัน ไม่มีทางให้ถ่ายเทน้ำไปสู่แม่น้ำลำคลองอื่นๆ แต่ไม่มีการบำบัดรักษาน้ำ อีกไม่นานนํ้าก็คงเน่าอีก เราไม่คิดว่าหน่วยงานในกรุงเทพมหานคร มีการบำบัดนํ้าเสียจากบ้านเรือนก่อนระบายทิ้งลงคลองและแม่น้ำ เราอยู่กันแบบตามเวรตามกรรมและตามดวงชะตานั่นเอง

เราเดินดูรูปภาพและถ่ายรูปอย่างเพลิดเพลิน ถ้าทุกคลองในกรุงเทพได้รับการบำบัดรักษา ก็คงจะดีมาก แต่คนส่วนใหญ่ก็ยังมักง่ายและไม่เห็นความสำคัญของธรรมชาติ คนส่วนใหญ่ไม่คิดว่าต้องรับผิดขอบต่อขยะและมลภาวะที่ตนก่อขึ้น เราก็ต้องคอยแก้ปัญหาที่ปลายเหตุเรื่อยไป

Now local people could enjoy life much more as their surroundings are much nicer and more cheerful.  The water in the canal is no longer black with nasty smell.  It would be much less dangerous health-wise if anyone happened to fall into the canal! I could imagine it would be quite tricky for drunken people to negotiate the narrow path in the evening. I almost had a taste of the green water twice!

I only managed to explore the canal half way as the evening light was getting dim very quickly. Hope you could visit this canal one day.
