### Wat Pariwat had been on my mind for ages since I saw some photos of strange statues decorating this temple.  I did once follow the map but the map took me to another temple quite far away by the river.  That was quite a memorable experience of getting lost and found myself stuck in a narrow lane.  Luckily the local people were very kind and directed me to a hidden car park where I could reverse and park my car for a walk around the area.  This time I decided to take a taxi to Wat Pariwat as the google map looked hopeless and there was a big construction project along the area. So, I could hardly recognise the dual carriage ways towards that district.  The taxi driver was a nice local chap who was very helpful and suggested that I walked across the cross on the walkway so that I could save some money; otherwise he would have to drive quite a long way to find the u-turn.  He was complaining about the new construction along the road which made driving much more cumbersome.  He told me to take the electric bus from the bus station opposite the temple to save some money.  That taxi driver was acting like my uncle!

It was late afternoon when I arrived at Pariwat Temple so the weather was much cooler and it was quite pleasant walking around a quiet temple.  This was a very old temple which used to be too closed to the river so the old temple’s main hall was collapsing on soggy earth.  New ordination hall and main hall were built during the reign of King Rama III.  This temple became famous during the last twenty years when the new abbot started to renovate the old ordination and main halls with cartoons and contemporary art and statues.  (These strange art and models would need another post).  I headed towards the river as I knew there should be a pier by the river.  In the old days, most temples would be facing rivers or canals so visitors could come to temples by boats.  Walking would be too tedious and roads would be very narrow and muddy most of the time.  It’s like waking through jungle in the old days.  We only started having proper roads for horses and carriages about a hundred years ago.

The weather and atmosphere by the river were just right.  The river was very calm and quiet; time seemed to stop for a while.  There were very few visitors at the pier; one family and a group of monks from other temple in the provinces seemed very excited by the huge river.

Some children bought some food to feed the hundreds of fish which gathered around the pier.  These fish came for free food years ago when the monks threw away leftovers into the river.  These fish decided to stay and they all have become too lazy to swim elsewhere.  These fish were very big; some were over one meter long.  Thai people dare not kill animals living in and around temples; they were afraid of bad karma.  Some old trees by the river have been spared from modernisation.  Nowadays most of the trees and green areas in temples have been transformed into buildings and concrete roads plus parking areas.   Very few temples in Bangkok could still maintain the jungle look and atmosphere of the past.  I was glad to spend an hour by the river; the quiet river was very peaceful and powerful at the same time.  The sunset was specially gentle against the vast expanse of water.  I wonder whether other people there could ever feel the subtle energy around the area.

เราอยากไปเที่ยววัดปาริวาสมานานมากแล้ว  เราได้เห็นภาพแปลกๆที่ตกแต่งภายใน  และภายนอกโบสถ์และพระวิหาร  เจ้าอาวาสให้ใช้ศิลปร่วมสมัยในการตกแต่งวัดเพื่อเป็นการดึงคนรุ่นใหม่ให้เข้าวัด  ครั้งแรกที่เราไปที่นั่น เราหลงทางสุดๆ  แผนที่นั้นใช้ไม่ได้เลย มันพาเราไปไกลมาก ออกไปไกลและไปโผล่ที่วัดเล็กๆอีกแห่งหนึ่งที่อยู่ติดแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา  ทางเข้าก็แคบมากจนเกือบติดอยู่ที่นั่น  โชคดีมากที่คนแถวนั้นใจดีมาก ช่วยบอกทางให้เราไปทะลุตรงลานเพื่อกลับรถ และจอดรถสักพัก และไปเดินสำรวจวัดนี้ เราคงต้องหาโอกาสไปที่นั่นอีก  คราวนี้เราตัดสินใจนั่งแท็กซี่ไปวัดปาริวาสเพราะไม่อยากจะเสียเวลาหลงทางอีก  คนขับรถก็ใจดีมาก ช่วยเราประหยัดเงินโดย บอกให้เราเดินข้ามถนนไป เพราะที่กลับรถไกลกว่าสิบกิโล ไม่คุ้มค่าใช้จ่าย  และยังบอกให้เรานั่งรถเมล์ไฟฟ้ากลับไปได้  สถานีอยู่ตรงข้ามวัดด้วย เราก็ไม่เคยเจอคนขับแท็กซี่ที่ทำตัวเหมือนเป็นลุงเราคนหนึ่ง

เราเดินเข้าไปในวัดที่เงียบสงบ แทบไม่มีคนมาเดินเล่นหรือไหว้พระกันเลยในช่วงนี้   เราเห็นพระเดินรดน้ำต้นไม้  บริเวณกว้างมาก เราหาทางเดินตรงไปที่ริมแม่น้ำ  เรารู้ว่าจะต้องมีท่าน้ำที่วัดปาริวาสแน่นอน  วัดสมัยก่อนจะอยู่ริมแม่น้ำ หรือริมคลอง เพื่อให้คนสามารถพายเรือมาที่วัดได้ง่าย  ทุกวัดจึงมีท่าเรือและที่ให้จอดเรือ พระสมัยนี้ไม่พายเรือไปบิณฑบาตเหมือนสมัยก่อนแล้ว.

เราดีใจที่เห็นต้นไม้ใหญ่หลงเหลืออยู่ตามริมแม่น้ำ สมัยก่อนคงมีต้นไม้ใหญ่เต็มไปหมด  วัดในอดีตจะมีสภาพเหมือนป่า และมีพื่นที่สีเขียวมากกว่าในปัจจุบัน  ตอนนี้ต้นไม้และที่ดินโดนปรับเปลี่ยนเป็น ตึกและอาคาร ถนนคอนกรีตและที่จอดรถกันหมด เวลาเดินเข้าวัด เราจึงรู้สึกว่าร้อนมาก และพื้นทางเดินก็ร้อนจากแดดจนไม่ดีต่อสุขภาพ  เขาคงไม่เข้าใจถึงพลังของต้นไม้และพื้นที่ช่วยฟื้นฟูสุขภาพของคนได้

ที่ท่าเรือมีครอบครัวหนึ่งพาเด็กมาดูนกและเลี้ยงปลา  เราสังเกตเห็นพระจากต่างจังหวัดกลุ่มหนึ่ง มาเดินเที่ยวชมวัด และมาถ่ายรูปที่ริมแม่น้ำ ดูกลุ่มนี้จะตื่นเต้นมากกับวิวพระอาทิตย์ตกดิน ที่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา  ดูพระเหล่านี้พยายามสำรวม และเก็บความตื่นเต้นกัน  ทุกคนขอให้เพื่อนถ่ายรูปกับแม่น้ำ  แต่เราก็สงสัยว่าคนอื่นๆสักกี่คน ที่จะสามารถสัมผัสกับพลังงานที่ดีๆ ในสถานที่นั้นได้หรือเปล่า  ทำไมคนส่วนใหญ่จึงไม่สามารถใช้สัมผัสที่มีอยู่ภายในตนเองได้ เราคิดว่าชีวิตของเขาจะเปลี่ยนแปลงไปในทางที่ดี ต่อสุขภาพจิตและสุขภาพกายมากทีเดียว

I always feel very good and energised being by the river.  Sunset over the river with its wonderful colours inspire new hopes and determination for making new effort for a new day.  I know there’s a lot of uncertainty about the future; I know I would always get the energetic and spiritual support from
Mother Nature.  I just have to be near the river and watching the sunset; then they would silently whisper to me and shower me with good vibes.
