Thanksgiving For The Kids | Freewrite

Marie's lower lips trembled as tears pooled in her eyes. She glanced up at the adults in groups of three or four, holding tall, crystal glasses with sparkling drinks in it, chatting and laughing. No one seemed to pay her any attention.

She had been excited when her mother had informed her that they would spend Thanksgiving at the Stevenson's house. She had always admired the stately mansion, the decor and Mrs Stevenson especially. She was a very nice woman who gave her cookies every time she visited with her mother.

"Sit still and be a good girl, okay?" her mother said before kissing her on the forehead. "I want to say hi to Mrs Claire. She's an important client. I'll be back soon." Then her mother walked away and Marie was alone. Her mother spent time with 'the clients' more than with her.

As Marie fumed silently, she gazed around the room until her eyes fell on someone she did not expect to see. Axel, the tough boy from school! He stood beside his father, similarly dressed in a black suit. His eyes met hers and he waved.

Marie smiled with relief and waved back. Axel's father noticed the two and glanced between them. Marie quickly folded her hands on her thighs and tried to look elsewhere but noticed Axel's father whisper to him. Then Axel smiled and walked towards her.

"Hey," he said shyly and sat down next to her.

"Hi Axel. Your father is friends with Mr Stevenson?"

"Yea. They are work buddies kind of. Mr Stevenson has a game room close to the library over there. Come, let's watch some movies while the adults drink as much as they want to, " he said, rolling his eyes. Marie grinned happily, relieved to have someone of her age to talk with.

"Yes. Let's. I wanna watch the latest spiderman movie if Mr Stevenson has it."

"What?! That's cheesy. Iron man!"

"No…" The two young friends argued back and forth till they got to the game room.
