How to Determine If Seeds Are in Good Condition or Alive

Checking the viability and condition of seeds is crucial before planting to ensure successful germination and healthy plant growth. Here are some methods you can use to determine if seeds are in good condition and alive and this is what I often do:

1. Seed Appearance: Healthy seeds generally have a uniform color and size. They should not be discolored, shriveled, or have visible mold or damage.

2. Float Test: Fill a container with water and place the seeds in it. Healthy seeds usually sink to the bottom, while non-viable or damaged seeds may float on the surface.

3. Germination Test: This is the most accurate method. Place a few seeds between damp paper towels or in a small container with moist soil and provide proper conditions for germination (appropriate temperature and moisture). Monitor the seeds over a set period (usually a week or two) to see if they sprout. If they do, they are likely viable; if not, they may be dead or non-viable.

4. Seed Coat Integrity: Gently squeeze the seed between your fingers. If the seed collapses easily, it might be dead or not viable. If it feels firm, it's more likely to be viable.

5. Smell: Some seeds, like beans, might emit a musty or unpleasant odor if they're not viable.

6. Professional Testing: If you need a high level of certainty, you can send your seeds to a seed testing laboratory. They will conduct specialized tests to determine viability and vigor.

7. Seed Source: Purchasing seeds from reputable suppliers increases the likelihood that the seeds are of good quality and viability.

8. Seed Age: Fresher seeds generally have a higher germination rate than older ones. Check the seed packet for the production or expiration date.

As I said in my previous blog, remember that not all seeds will have a 100% germination rate, even if they're in good condition. Some natural variability is expected. If you're unsure about the viability of your seeds, it's always a good idea to perform a germination test before planting them in larger quantities.

Having good seeds is the crucial part. If the seeds are good, you are good to go. Thank you for sharing how to determine and figure out good seeds.
