But what about taking the life of plants? Are the lives of plants some how less important than animals? Plants are intelligent beings with analogous systems to our own for sensing their surroundings, themselves, and even learning. Animals possess systems that are homologous, we share a common ancestor, and thus we are more similar to them and create a stronger empathetic bond with them.

We live in an Oroborus, life begets life. "Murder" for our own benefit is inevitable, be it animal or plant. This is why the ethical treatment of plants and animals should always be taken into account. 

Personally, I do not think plants should be mass farmed the way they are. Farms in their current conditions are akin to prisons for plants. Plants exist in the wild in forests and prairies, that is they exist in biologically diverse ecosystems. Farms, in general, are destroying everything down to the microbial life and planting single crops in mass rows. This is where food forests come in to play, planting multiple different crops together in a setting more similar to their habitats in the wild. 

But hey, I'm just a madman. :)

The mindful, ethical production, distribution, and preparation of one's food is extremely important. We should be taking action to minimize any unethical or violent actions & behaviors, and I would say that a plant-based diet does that in a large way.

It seems like a big difference between killing animals to eat them and harvesting fruits/flowers/leaves, which do not kill the plant, and are often grown to fall away (often by being eaten) in order to reproduce.

Roots are a different matter (though still used for reproduction in many cases, like potatoes), but this is all on a spectrum, and each makes their own decision where to fall.

I would say the fact that humans have strong empathetic responses to animal deaths until/unless they are desensitized to it. It doesn't seem to be the same with plants.

A big part of mindful eating is where it's coming from, who grew it, their intentions at the time, how they treat it... whatever you're eating.

Not trying to convince anyone to be vegan, simply voicing my distaste for euphemisms and the same misunderstandings going back and forth all the time.

"Protein" as a necessary nutrient is still so prevalent in mainstream health education and conception of the masses it's crazy to me since it's entirely fabricated and has absolutely no semblance to real biology at all.

The human body can't do anything with protein molecules. They are too complex. Yes, muscle and tissue are made of proteins, but that doesn't mean you can just eat proteins and they magically become muscle and tissue. As you said, the human body requires amino acids, which are the building blocks of the more complex protein chains. What does the digestive system do with protein chains? It breaks them down into individual amino acids, which are then assimilated by the body in that state. Where the amino acids come from is completely irrelevant, in fact, it is less stress on your body, and requires less digestive energy (the most energy intensive process in the human body) to skip the break down of the protein into amino acids, and go straight to the amino acids themselves.

"Protein" as a nutrient is a myth, and an outright lie purported by people who benefit from the mass consumption of it. There is zero scientific foundation to the claim even in mainstream biological research.

Great information, the kind that should be taught in school... 

My son is into weight lifting and I started making him the following smoothie:
greens, almonds, quinoa, elderberry syrup, turmeric, ginger, pineapple, apple cider vinegar and coconut milk.  

He was amazed when he stepped on the scale and found out he had gained weight.

Now he makes his own. :)

That's awesome! There is certainly no lack in nutrients, vitamins, or calories from vegan foods (assuming you don't just switch to a vegan version of the S.A.D.)
