Its scientific name: [Nypa fruticans](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nypa_fruticans). There are two parts of this plant, which makes it very popular in Aceh.

First, because of its young leaves, which are made to be a wrapper of tobacco, and smoked as cigarette. The taste and smell of that traditional cigarette very typical.

And second, is because of its delicious fruit. Nipah fruit tastes almost like the taste of coconut meat, and immature seed of the fruits similar to sugar palm fruit and also called [attap chee](http://mangrove.nus.edu.sg/pub/seashore/text/109.htm).

In ancient times, in some places in Southeast Asia, Its leaves have been used to make paper.

Nipah also has a variety of other uses. And lately, coir of nipah fruits which is softer than other coir also produced to be doormats.
