>De todos los autores que he leído, puedo decir, con absoluta certeza, que con el que más me identifico, es con el Gabo. Desde el día en que cayó en mis manos "Cien años de soledad", la primera  novela que leí de él, nunca más pude desprenderme de esa forma mágica y fascinante con la que escribía. Leerlo, para mí, es permanecer en estado de ensoñación.

>Siempre me pregunto cómo hubiera sido una conversación con mi ídolo. Entonces, yo misma me respondo. Mientras lo observo en el patio de la Casa de la Poesía de La Habana, cierro los ojos y me imagino sentada junto a él en una mesa, compartiendo un jugo de plátano, de esos mismos plátanos de la Compañía Bananera. Veo a un hombre sencillo, modesto y a la vez ingenioso. El aire huele a Macondo. Vacilo un instante hasta que rompo el hielo con una afirmación.

_ ¿Sabe, Maestro? Sus palabras son mi brújula y mi credo.

Él me sonríe con ojos vivos y gesto cálido mientras bebe un sorbo de jugo.

_ Gracias. ¿También eres escritora?_ me pregunta.

_Al menos hago el intento. Dígame, Maestro ¿Cómo nace algo tan imposible y a la vez tan cierto como ese pasaje donde Remedios la Bella asciende al cielo con las sábanas blancas?

_Nace de los cuentos de mi abuela. Ella veía a las muchachas tender ropa bajo el sol y el viento y decía: "Mira, mi niño, parece que vuelan". La magia está en contar lo real como lo siente el que lo vive. ¿Tu abuela no decía cosas así?

_ Mi abuela decía que las lechuzas hablan con los muertos. Pero cuando lo escribro, suena forzado. Siento que no fluye con naturalidad.

_Exacto. Eso ocurre porque, en literatura, la verdad no es el hecho en sí, es más bien la emoción que lo envuelve. No lo olvides nunca. No escribas "luchuzas parlantes". Escribe "el grito de las lechuzas, ese del que mi abuela me hablaba, era el de los difuntos llorando sus penas". Es necesario darle peso concreto al milagro. ¿En qué historia trabajas ahora?

_ En algo común, Maestro. Una sobre un avión que atraviesa un océano y desaparece. Pero me trabo, temo que solo sea un absurdo más.

_El coronel de una de mis novelas esperó más de cincuenta años su pensión ¿Eso no es más absurdo? Es la espera lo que cuenta y da vida al relato. Haz que ese avión lleve algo trascendental, imprescindible para algo o alguien, no sé, un medicamento importante, un antídoto contra el mal aliento, la última Cocacola del desierto...lo que se te ocurra. La urgencia revela la humanidad o la falta de ella en tu historia. Escribe sobre ese avión. ¿Entiendes lo que digo?

_ Sí. Lo entiendo. Gracias, Maestro.

_Gracias a ti, por seguir creyendo que las sábanas pueden volar. Ahora ve, escribe. Y recuerda: la mejor magia es la que no necesita explicación.

>Abro los ojos y regreso. No tuve la dicha de ver en persona a Gabriel García Márquez a pesar de que vino muchas veces a Cuba, pero lo que si puedo hacer, es verlo y conversar con su estatua y hasta tomarme una foto junto a él.

CONVERSING WITH GABO

Welcome to my blog. May peace and love be with you.

>Of all the authors I've read, I can say with absolute certainty that the one I identify with the most is Gabo. From the day "One Hundred Years of Solitude," the first novel I read by him, fell into my hands, I could never detach myself from that magical and fascinating way he wrote. Reading him, for me, is like remaining in a state of reverie.

>I always wonder what a conversation with my idol would have been like. Then I answer myself. As I watch him in the courtyard of Havana's House of Poetry, I close my eyes and imagine myself sitting at a table with him, sharing a banana drink, made from those very bananas of the Bananera Company. I see a simple, modest, and yet witty man. The air smells of Macondo. I hesitate for a moment before breaking the ice with a statement.  

_"You know, Maestro? Your words are my compass and my creed."
 
He smiles at me with lively eyes and a warm expression while taking a sip of his juice.  

_"Thank you. Are you a writer too?"_ he asks me.  

_"At least I try. Tell me, Maestro, how does something as impossible and yet so true come to life, like that passage where Remedios the Beauty ascends to heaven with the white sheets?"

_"It comes from my grandmother's stories. She would see the girls hanging laundry in the sun and wind and say, 'Look, my child, they look like they're flying.' The magic lies in telling the real as it's felt by the one living it. Didn't your grandmother say things like that?"
 
_"My grandmother said that owls talk to the dead. But when I write it, it sounds forced. I feel like it doesn't flow naturally."_

_"Exactly. That happens because, in literature, the truth isn't the fact itself, but rather the emotion surrounding it. Never forget that. Don't write 'talking owls.' Write 'the cry of the owls, the one my grandmother told me about, was the dead weeping for their sorrows.' You need to give the miracle concrete weight. What story are you working on now?"
 
_"On something ordinary, Maestro. One about an airplane that crosses an ocean and disappears. But I get stuck; I fear it might just be another absurdity."

_"The colonel in one of my novels waited more than fifty years for his pension. Isn't that more absurd? It's the waiting that counts and gives life to the story. Make that plane carry something vital, indispensable for something or someone—I don't know, an important medicine, an antidote for bad breath, the last Coca-Cola in the desert... whatever comes to mind. The urgency reveals the humanity, or the lack of it, in your story. Write about that plane. Do you understand what I'm saying?"_  
_"Yes. I understand. Thank you, Maestro."

_"Thank you, for still believing that sheets can fly. Now go, write. And remember: the best magic doesn't need explaining."
  
>I open my eyes and return. I never had the privilege of seeing Gabriel García Márquez in person, even though he came to Cuba many times. But what I can do is see and talk to his statue and even take a picture with him.
