There is a good chance you heard of Schrodinger’s Cat. This famous thought experiment that was created by Erwin Schrodinger in 1935. But he would have probably never thought that his cat will continue living on even almost a hundred years later.

<h3></h3>

Now, physicists from Yale University developed an incredible device that they decided to call an error-correcting cat. This thing nicely combines Schrodinger’s cat – the almost magical idea of superposition – with the ability to correct some of the most complicated errors in quantum computing. This breakthrough in our tries to improve quantum computers and prevent so many errors from being created among the fragile qubits.

Bot traditional and quantum computers are prone to errors during their calculations. And in both, we use bit or qubit redundancy to fight them. What this means is that each “normal” bit or qubit is being run by several physical bits or qubits. And quantum computers need a lot more qubits.

<h3></h3>

So, the physicists decided to employ Schrodinger’s cat. They created a “cat qubit” which itself prevents errors. But it is not cute and furry, nor does it is inside a closed box with a vial of poison. Nonetheless, the cat qubit encodes the “correct” qubit” as a superposition of both the states in a single electronic circuit. More specifically, it is a superconductive microwave resonator in which oscillations correspond to the two states of the cat qubit in superposition.

What is important is the fact that they achieved this by using microwaves signals in a device that is not that much complicated than a traditional superconductive qubit. Plus, they managed to change the state of the cat qubit on purpose and they also developed a new way to read the quantum information coded in the qubit. Now, they believe their error-correcting quantum cat will find its place in many quantum technologies with superconductive circuits.
