New Nanomaterial Could Replace Cartilage
Humans can be quite fragile. One of the things that can get damaged through either injury or disease that is very hard to replace for us currently is cartilage. Until now.

Experts from the Swedish Chalmers University say they have developed a rubber-like nanomaterial that can be easily integrated into the human body. Its usage could revolutionize medicine. In the press release, Anand Rajasekharan – one of the members of the team behind the material – said they themselves were really surprised that the material is very soft, flexible, and extremely flexible.

The non-toxic material could possibly replace human tissue – more precisely cartilage is from what we know made from the same stuff as plexiglass.

There are a lot of diseases that cause the cartilage to crumble and that leas to friction. The friction then results in a lot of pain for the suffering patient. Having a replacement material could alleviate many people from pain and suffering.

One additional benefit is the fact that the material can be altered with small proteins found within the immune system to also have anti-bacterial properties. That could also allow it to be used in – for example – urinal catheters.

And just to make sure we said everything that needs to be said. The scientists have already started a company under the name Amferia that will bring their invention to the market.
