Using The Coldness Of Deep Space To Light A Lightbulb

Just a few months ago you could’ve read about a technology coming from Stanford that was capable of mining energy at night from the coldness of space itself. But we were sad because it was capable of mining only 64 nanowatts per meter squared. But it seems that the scientists at Stanford never sleep as their new and cheap thermoelectric device is capable of lighting a LED light.

As the research lead – Aaswath Raman from the University of California in Los Angeles – says their device creates electricity at night and thus could be the key to using renewable energy at places that need electricity at night. Currently, we use many different kinds of solar panels that can provide us with renewable energy during the day. But there is no comparable energy source that could do the same at night.

The technology of mining energy from the coldness of space is probably the most intriguing type of energetics out of them all. It can circumvent the limitations of solar cells in an interesting way. The scientists from Stanford used the fact that space is an incredible thermoelectric source of energy. The surface of their device is turned to the cold dark sky and radiates its thermal energy into the atmosphere. Part of it gets lost to the coldness of space and that makes the temperature of the device lower than surrounding air as a result.

It may sound strange but actually, it is a very common phenomenon. It is also responsible for the fact that ice gets created on ice even when the temperatures are above zero. This principle can be used to create renewable energy. The scientists build a cheap “space-cold” generator and tested it on the roof of a building under the bright December sky.

When they connected a white LED light to the device it was lighted using the coldness of space. Truly, light from pure darkness.
