Why Did Neanderthals Go Extinct? Ask A Supercomputer
Supercomputer simulations of climate, vegetation, genetics, and demographics in the early ice age prove that our ancestors are the most likely culprits in the Neanderthals' extinction.

Our closest relatives live in Eurasia for at least 300 thousand years. They successfully faced ice ages and other horrific events. But then, 43 to 38 thousand years they vanished. Out of the blue. The reason why is one of the largest mysteries of current evolutionary anthropology.

Because of the current changes in the global climate a lot of the extinctions in the past are thought to be also caused by the climate changing. The same goes for Neanderthals. But there is another theory which says our bulky cousins fell to crossbreeding with us. But new research from the IBS Center for Climate Physics in South Korea disproves both the climate change and sex theories.

Axel Timmermann and his coworkers used the Aleph supercomputer. From its calculations and simulations the Neanderthals weren't pushed out by climate change or by crossbreeding. The only reasonable explanation is that humans got rid of Neanderthals. And let's be fair, this isn't a completely new theory. It was sort of obvious ā€“ the Neanderthals died out soon after our kind arrived at the scene.

The key role in the research was played by supercomputer simulation of Neanderthal and modern population movement in the ice age lands. These simulations included realistic climate data, changes in temperatures, precipitation, and even how vegetation grew in those times as well as genetic and demographic data. The simulations show that our ancestors had the upper hand because we used available food sources much better.

So, what exactly were our tricks? While the supercomputer models aren't that detailed, most likely it was all about better hunting strategies, better resistance against different pathogens, or the fact that our kind had an easier time getting pregnant. As it seems, one of the first species humans made go extinct were other humans.

Oh well maybe the supercomputer confirmed that sometimes we are our own worst enemy. I wish Aleph would make a mistake this time
