### The first practical blueprint to build a scalable ion quantum computer has been published in the international journal *Science Advances*.

Now a large-scale quantum computer is being built based on these blueprints that were created by an international team, led by Prof. Winfried Hensinger at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Sussex. Scientists from Google (USA), Aarhus University (Denmark), RIKEN (Japan) and Siegen University (Germany) also took part in this new achievement.

Hopes are high for this quantum computer, with a potential capabilities to answer many of sciences questions like being able to create **new medicines**, solve **scientific problems** that humans have been solved yet, provide answers about the deep reaches of the **universe**, and solve computer problems that current computer computations would take billions of years.

### This new type of quantum computer transmits quantum bits between individual quantum computing modules.

Each module is constructed using silicon microfabrication techniques within the ability of current technology to manufacture. They use long-wavelength radiation–based quantum gate technology to transport charged atoms (ions) between modules.

### This design allows for large-scale modular computational processing power.

The nuts-and-bolts to construct of the vice have been provided. Each module can be lowered into a steel frame where many modules are connecting using an electric field. Then individually charged atoms can be transfered from one module to another, allowing all modules to interconnect.

**Each of these connected modules build into larger vacuum module chambers that contain 2.2 million X-Junctions.**

### These each in turn can also be connected to form a larger-scale quantum computer device that can expand almost indefinitely.

Previous proposals for quantum computers used light through fiber-optic connections. But this new invention of modular quantum computing through charged atoms, create **electric fields to transport these ions from one module to another.**

### This makes connection speeds 100 times faster between each module compared to current state-of-the-art fiber technology that would have been used to construct a larger scale quantum device.

The UK government is working with the Ion Quantum Technology Group that developed these blueprints for an actual quantum computer, which was impossible for many years. Instead of billions of laser beams to perform quantum computing operations in a large scale quantum computer, now they can use the simpler application of microchip voltages just like current computers.

Once all of the modules are assembled, they form a large sophisticated vacuum apparatus with integrated quantum computing silicon microchips which hold charged atoms using electric fields. 

The blueprint is made public in an effort to promote and ensure greater scientific collaboration throughout the world and speed track the groundbreaking technology into more areas of industry.
