There are a goals, objectives, destinations or ends we want to achieve, but there are challenges on our way and path to get there. Life is full of opportunities and challenges. It takes work to reach our destination. Are you ready to do the honest work to reach and grab what you want to achieve? Or are you looking to cheat your way to get what you want? We often struggle to get where we want to go. But that is part of what makes the final achievement that much more worth it, that much more of an accomplishment. If everything was handed to us, there would be little sense of accomplishment. The easy path is often less fulfilling. Being handed things and not working for it often takes away the deeper meaning and purpose behind attaining it.

Source
In school, we may have been told that "If you cheat, you’ll only be cheating yourself." But those who wanted to cheat, did it anyways. And cheating doesn't diminish in the adult world, it amplifies because there isn't a teacher watching over the class anymore. Honest is a lot virtue in many places. Romantic partners cheat, business partners cheat, athletes cheat, politician cheat and corporations cheat. People want to get ahead or get what they want, regardless of the honesty lost. Dishonesty takes over in our behavior when we will do whatever we can do to get what we want. When there is a conflict of interest between doing things honestly and getting what we want, we justify and rationalize what we do in order to get what we wanted. If we want to make money, then we often do whatever we can to get ahead and make money, so long as we don't get punished for doing it. If there are no formalized rules against it, it's justified, even if it's wrong to do. Many people don't want to (or can't) look at the issue objectively detached from their personal self-centered and self-interested motivations to see it from the outside and determine if it's really right to do. If they can cheat the system to get ahead, they will.

Source

Money is a top motivator in business, and it's no surprise that in a study on college students and cheating, business school comes out on top with the most cheaters. People want to get what they want without having to do the honest work to get it. And this applies in other areas. If there is no downside to cheating, many people do it. Some people buy things they want, but can't afford, and return it before the return policy is up. Walmart has a 90 day return policy, so some people buy TVs and use them until before the return date is up. People want to have physical or emotional intimacy, but may cheat on their partner rather than work at the existing commitment they are in or leave to find someone else after. If they know they won't get caught, 74% of men and 68% of women say they would cheat on their partner. Is cheating the best way forward? Not really. You might get the thing you crave, money, sex, an object, but it a negatively affect your well-being. That is, if you still care about being an honest person and doing what's right.

Source

When you don't work for what you got, when you don't earn it honestly, when you cheat your way, you end up cheating yourself. You didn't get where you are on your own merits, from doing the work yourself, you conned your way there and conned yourself. You think you got ahead, but did you really? Earning our way to get what we want is good for our sense of self and well-being. We feel proud. We feel like we actually accomplished something ourselves. You aren't really getting ahead as an authentic, real, true self/being when you cheat your way and don't work or earn what you get. The meaningfulness and purposefulness of the journey/means is lost in order to attain the end. A study from 2016 called "[Happiness and Identities](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0049089X16301776)" talks about cheating yourself out of meaningful happiness. To earn tickets for a lottery, participants could cheat or earn their winnings fair and square. Cheaters tried to justify their dishonesty by convincing themselves they were still "good", as they they did nothing wrong, yet thought others would view them as doing something wrong or immoral, hence the need to justify their actions. The way they viewed themselves and how they thought others would view them was in different for a reason. They knew there was wrong in their actions, even if it was allowed by the rules or lack of rules to disallow it. This contradiction between how they viewed themselves and how they thought others would view them caused greater unhappiness the more they cheated their way. When cheating as a group though, they weren't as bothered by what they did, as they justified their dishonesty as not being purely selfish. Thinking they were helping others in a group allowed greater justification of their behavior.

Source

Authentic happiness depends on living authentically. If you act against your moral compass, then you are in contradiction within yourself and your meaningful, authentic, real self/being is affected. If you care about doing what's right, you go against yourself. If you have a weaker moral compass, then you don't care as much about what you do being right or wrong as long as you get what you want according to your own self-interest and self-centeredness to justify it. No one is perfect, and we can all improve ourselves through self-examination, self-reflection and self-analysis. We may think the rewards we get by cheating are worth it and make us happy, but the dishonest behavior and dishonesty to ourselves can backfire. In politics, people can buy politicians to get ahead. Construction contracts can be awarded favorably by buying politicians with kickbacks. If the politician gives the contract to someone, they kickback a return to the politician. This is corruption. The rulers of society are engaging in corruption to give out contracts that are paid by the community pool (i.e. taxpayer money). The contractors didn't really earn the job. And when they do, they often scam and overinflate their prices and even cut back on the quality of construction to make even more profits. On Steem, you can buy votes from the rich rulers through bidbots, to buy your reputation, to buy popularity, and to buy rewards that come from the community pool. The rulers get paid to autovote on content regardless of it's merits, regardless of whether they find value in it. You don't earn the vote, you buy it. And like the cutbacks on quality construction that would never honestly have gotten the contract, many posts are not what would normally get people to appreciate or vote on it to get rewarded or raise their reputation. Additionally, the study on the lottery tickets is similar to how Steem works in a way, because you're not guaranteed to get upvotes, it's a lottery of having the chance of getting upvoted by larger staked accounts that reward you for the work/content you produce. Bidbots are like buying winning lottery tickets. You're not even in the lottery to maybe get an upvote, you buy an upvote to win the lottery each time. That's cheating the lottery, where everyone else has to play the fair game of winning the lottery while you buy your way to winning it. Also, as more people buy guaranteed winning lottery tickets, there are less chances for others to win in the fair lottery as all the rewards come from the same lottery reward pool. If more people sell their votes, then less people are playing the fair lottery game and more people are selling guaranteed winning lottery tickets. Trying to get ahead any way we can as long as the rules allow it, as long as there are no rules that disallow, or as long as there is no negative consequences or punishment for doing it -- doesn't mean it's the right thing to do or the best thing to do for ourselves or others involved. I hope more people will rethink their behavior. --- **Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.** --- References: - [Study Says Cheating May Help You Get Ahead, But You'll Lose More In The End](https://www.forbes.com/sites/amymorin/2016/05/07/study-says-cheating-may-help-you-get-ahead-but-youll-lose-more-in-the-end/#3dba677d65ef) - [Getting a Grad Degree in Cheating](http://www.pewresearch.org/2006/09/26/getting-a-grad-degree-in-cheating/) - [Infidelity Statistics](https://www.statisticbrain.com/infidelity-statistics/) - Jan E. @krnel so glad you brought bidbots up. The inherent claim is that bidbots are bad for steemit and steemians. They are centralizing the SP. Could you provide evidence for these claims. I am not doubting you, but it is my understanding that tools are not inherently bad, but the way they are used can be. So I want the data to see if their is some moral and just way that they can be used. Example: Provide a BidBot that doesn't allow the bidder to bid on their own accounts, but may be used to reward a steemian whose efforts deserve the curation. Good: Reward for sweat equity. Bad : Consolidates steem. Solution donate SP to a solid producer of the group periodically preventing the consolidation of steem. Making the reward both SP and morally sound? The only way I can evaluate is to gather the data, but am new to steemit and don't have a clue where to go to get that information. Nice post and outline for the problem. Thanks!

They get SBD to buy more SP. Most of the SBD goes to the vote buying services: https://steemit.com/steemit/@penguinpablo/how-much-sbd-and-steem-is-sent-to-the-voting-bots-per-day Much of the profits of the platform keep going back to the the vote sellers, who also make curation rewards.

Yeah and the fact that the buyer sold the potential in the steem or SBD in the first place means they can never actually have a positive ROI. The potential Earnings as SP is way more than you will ever get with an up vote. Been doing some digging. This is really not good at all. Message you in Desord.

A lot of people is cheating the system but not just here as you said, if it's done right you can manage to be even some country's president. > If you act against your moral compass I think the problem is some people don't have a moral compass, it is misdirected or don't care about it. Keep it up, I love your work and I think it's very necessary, thanks!

Tricky topic this one:) It is always good to do the right things. My personal point of view is that maybe i can tolerate some cheeky behavior from people who are not that lucky and absolutely struggling for life. But the ones who are doing well and still are with bad atitude and deceving are the worst ones.

Just like kids that get everything given to them, they don’t appreciate their stuff and often treat their ‘things’ terribly because they will just get a new on. Now take that child and have them work for it. Do a few chores or special projects. Have them ‘earn’ what they get. They will respect what they have earned and take better care of it. Earn your votes and you will have a better respect for Steemit as a whole.

If the steem team wants to fix bidbot, they should remove sp delegation and vote selling. Feels like steem team is promoting this and don't take action against people who rape reward pool.

It does seem most are willing to cheat to satisfy their immediate rewards. Having said that, I am opposed to the bidbots not so much because the buyers of these votes are getting unduly enriched. The opposite is normally the case, as I have mentioned before. Unless they pay out at 200% the purchaser is losing money while enriching the bot owners and those delegating to them by allowing them to bypass the SBD/SP split. I believe it is short sighted of the bot owners/delegators which is why I don't care for them. They make it seem like one needs to use them to new accounts, which usually ensures new accounts are paying to play. The site already has a problem with retention, and this dynamic is not only contributing to it, but also adding daily to the negative word of mouth to the site. Additionally, those who are delegating for a higher return than they would get curating are decreasing the posts that would organically be viewed and upvoted, making it harder for quality posts to get visibility, also exacerbating the high turnover with new accounts as they feel hopeless in ever doing anything here. Post and get paid? lol. More like post and get ignored. People need to understand that the lie above is ensuring for there to be a high churn as people leave as quick as they come. The sjw mentality I see of protesting how others use their stake though tempers my view on it. While I believe it is harmful to the site, I also feel it is these peoples stake to do with as they want. I am wary of the flag wars I see taking place, some of the anger coming dangerously close to the protests that became the norm at right wing events from those scared of the free speech. I have no answers other than try to do the best I can in my actions that allow me to sleep well at night. While I won't vote for any witnesses that take part in the vote bots, I also won't crusade against them because of it. Nor the TA guy who everyone seems to hate because of the large votes that are probably self cast. It's his money. If others can decide how he spends it then they can turn at any time and tell me how I spend mine. If they are open to discussing it, I would share my two cents. But for now, I am guessing they could care less what I think, lol.

Yes, buyers can lose on it I've done calculation on some bidbots based on past payouts (this was 2 months ago), and the person was gaining from total SBD+SP returned vs SBD paid. Yes, a site that is pay to play to get rewarded and get ahead gets a negative sleezy rep. People have bad experience and share that. Indeed, they drive down the organic growth by using up the vote power int he system for bought content. People aren't making it as they once were based on the work of curation. > Post and get paid? lol. More like post and get ignored. LOL :P TA guy? It's a shared reward pool, so if power is being abused in mostly selfish ways at the detriment to everyone else, simply arguing that "it's my stake I can do what I want" is not a good argument. Steem coul use there 25% stake and just keep givignthemselves more rewards by posting many times and self voting. It's not simply about owning your stake and doing what you want. Many want this to be a community. No one is taking your SP. You can hold coins like any other chain. Juts because you have coins doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with them to create problems in the community.

If you look at Steemit as if though it is a Bank for the purposes of holding Steem, then members of Steemit who let Steemit hold their Steem are similar to a Bank's customers. When you let a bank hold (or borrow) your money, you'd normally receive a % APR return. Steem operates similarly in that they allow their depositors to dictate where the APR or “rewards” are to go to. The larger you’re Steem Power the more APR you can direct. To rail against what an individual does with their returns is like getting pissed off at Bill Gates for not sharing the APR that he gets on his billions. Let’s imagine that Bill Gates in this scenario owns an advertising business and had 100,000 billboards. To rail against him or the people who buy ad space from him to promote either crap or quality products doesn't really make sense, because what you're railing against is the free market. This might not be the perfect analogy, hell it might not even be an accurate analogy, but I think it's close to the reality of how this platform was designed. I think the problem is that the Steem block chain is one thing, and the apps built upon it are something else entirely. As far as morality is concerned I don’t think that the people who can see these parallels are even thinking in terms of what is moral and what is not, yet, rather from the viewpoint of service provider and customer. Now, who is right and who is wrong, that’s beyond me at this point. There are so many ways to view this platform and to blanket condemn bot operators or their customers neglects to comprehend the fact that not everyone interprets the system the same. Some folks are doing Steemit like a business, while others or doing it like a social media platform, others as a creative outlet, or a hobby. Yes you’ll have some that use bots to boost shit post, but allot of the bot operators are actively preventing that with blacklists and whitelists. Maybe your campaign against them should be a campaign to reform them? That way we will have quality trending lists, just an idea. You’ve been here for a long time, you’ve grown roots. You put out consistently quality articles, not all of them I agree with but the point is. What business is it of yours if some people want to establish themselves quicker? Do you get pissed off when people join the platform and get popular over night? Like people from Youtube? Did they merit their fame or did they cheat by using their YouTube celebrity? I just don’t think everything is quite as black and white as you see it. It’s been my experience that the world is a gradient of grays. Take for example our fiat currency system; many of us know our currency has no value and that it’s being used to keep us as slaves, but when you go to pay the rent do you feel guilty for using their slave instruments to do so? We live in a complex multiparadigmic world and you seem to be a moral absolutist about things that aren’t really as absolute as I think you think they are. Maybe I’m wrong, who is to say? Is the platform a business or a social media outlet? When you add units of value, I think it tends to become both. In fact, I think there is room for both, there has to be and if there isn’t they may as well take the steem out of steemit. As far as the notion of a 51% attack goes even if all of the bid bot customers burst into flames over night. The bid bot operators in order to lay claim to their APR would simply upvote themselves or engage in reciprocal upvoting. Bots could be made for that too. In fact, Steemauto could be used for reciprocal upvoting. Ergo a 51% might be impossible to prevent? I don't know how reality based your fears are with regards to that or why it would be in the best interest of bot operators to kill the golden goose? If it's making them wealthy why would they try and hijack or break it? How would they benefit? To what ends would be their agenda? Also how could a 51% attack be avoided if you have bid bots either operating as they do or resorting to automated reciprocal (or self) up-voting?

I totally agree with you @krnel, we need to be truthful in our dealings because we have to sustain the ecosystem of the blockchain to keep away from crashing!
