Tanto in my pocket
I've wanted a Tanto blade for a long time. I've looked at a lot, but never pulled the trigger until this week. MidwayUSA, one of my favorite suppliers had a special offer. I couldn't resist and even added a few boxes of CCI standard .22 ammo to get the free shipping rates, which is also generally hard to find these days.

Received it just in time for the weekend. The knife (or very short sword) is a Tanto made by Cold Steel. While some folks aren't as happy with Cold Steel as in the old days now that their factory has moved, I'm still tickled with this one.

It's a Cold Steel "Recon Tanto" 7" Blade, just under 12" overall length. It has a rubberized feel handle, and came with the kydex sheath as well. I was overjoyed to get this for just $29 U.S. These generally go for around $80-$300 depending on model. I don't know if they made an error on pricing, but it went thru, shipped and arrived two days after order (along with the ammo).

Couldn't be more pleased. For those that don't know, the Tanto blade is a Japanese style, and was often carried by Samurai as a companion to their much longer Katana. It was designed primarily as a stabbing weapon, but can also slash and chop quite effectively.

According to Wikipedia, there are actually over 11 different Tanto blade styles. Although this is the more modern shape that started becoming popular in the 80's, and that most folks today associate with the Tanto name.

The Kydex sheath fits nicely with a distinct click when it snaps into place. The velcro/snap belt loop allows it to be put onto a belt without having to take belt off and thread it thru.

Has a decent edge right out of the box, although I'll probably touch it up a bit. Won't be my everyday carry, but fantastic for hunting/fishing/camping trips or Weekend Woods Walks. 

Very happy with this bargain find! It will make a great addition and companion to the item in my next post which actually came in directly from Japan last week. Stay tuned for that one, it's very special!

Call me oldfashioned, but I have been sceptical on Japanese knifes so far. They are a bit too radically different for my taste. And usually rather expensive as well...

That being said... I just lately bought a kitchen hacking knife, that could be compared to some Asian style knifes, like the traditional Chinese kitchen knifes.

It is, however, made in Spain by Arcos and surprisingly inexpensive, only €22. Must be about 24 dollars.
Lets see, perhaps I do a short post on that soon.

Yes, would like to see that. Going to be in the market for kitchen knives before long I think. The ones we have several of the steak knives wooden handles are ruined from family sticking them in the dishwasher. Ugh.

Yeah, wood and dishwasher is not a good combination. Though, it depends on the wood. I have some old 99 cent steak knifes, that have been in the dishwasher a thousand times. The wood has bleached a bit, but is still in one piece.
The real chef knifes I dont put in the dishwasher anyway, its not good for the blades. Some may rust or go blunt. I hand wash them and dry them quickly.
Usually its better to pay a bit more for quality kitchen knifes, and look for certain features. I would not recommend cast plastic handles for example, like your Tanto knife has. I had some, where the blade came loose after a while, which really sucks when you cut something.
Well, the ruined steak knifes could be a nice DIY project if you like wood work. Get some pretty hardwood and make new handles, if the knifes are worth the effort. I have done so, and it can look really cool. I just had difficulties to get those knife rivets, but perhaps you have more luck with that.

One can do worse than have a tanto. Shamefully, I do not have one but have seen a few I'd like to own. This one looks nice, is it weighted well? It looks like it has a nice amount of material in it for weight and balance. 

Damn you, now I'm thinking about looking at knives. That's usually a costly exercise.

This is weighted well, with good balanced feel, although the grip seems just a bit small. I don't have large hands (med gloves) so it's ok for me, but I can see those with large hands not liking it. Definitely the best $29 I've ever spent on a knife. I just couldn't not order immediately at that price. Would not complain had I spent a Benjamin on it. "It will cut".

I tend to prefer a blade more in the Ka-Bar/Bowie profile myself. I never really caught the tanto tip bug. That said, I did once buy a genuine Ka-Bar with a tanto blade specifically to trade to someone else for some other sporting goods.
