Often, a video game doesn't need great gameplay or unique mechanics to attract attention in one way or another. Even simple mouse gameplay can be interesting if it has a fresh approach. This is precisely what happened to me with The Operator, a rather peculiar title in which the entire adventure is played out using the mouse and, on some occasions, by typing a few words or commands on the keyboard. The only thing that may seem a little strange or unexpected is the use of fairly realistic photographs and videos of characters, or even real photos.

The Operator basically puts us in the role of a computer operator in a secret US institution, the FDI, which is the Federal Intelligence Department. Our initial objective is simple: to help the field agents who call us and collaborate with them to solve the cases they are investigating. However, little by little, we discover that the story is much deeper as we learn about the history of FDI defectors and how the FDI itself seems to have hidden clues and even eliminated witnesses in very intriguing cases. Muchas veces un videojuego no necesita de una gran jugabilidad o mecánicas únicas para de una forma u otra llamar la atención, incluso con una jugabilidad simple con el mouse logra ser interesante si tiene un enfoque poco visto antes. Esto precisamente me paso con The Operator, un título bastante peculiar en donde principalmente toda la aventura se desarrolla con el mouse y en algunas ocasiones también escribiendo con el teclado algunas palabras o comandos, lo único que puede resultar un poco extraño o inesperado es el hecho de utilizar fotografías y videos bastante realista de personajes o incluso puede que sean fotos reales.

The Operator básicamente nos pone en el personaje de un operador de computadora en una institución secreta de USA, el FDI el cual se trata del departamento de inteligencia federal. Nuestro objetivo en principio sea sencillo, ayudar a los agentes de campo que nos llamen y colaborarles para resolver los casos que estén investigando, aunque poco a poco descubriremos que la historia es un mucho mas profunda al ir enterándonos de la historia de desertores al FDI y también como el propio FDI parece haber oculado pistas y hasta eliminados testigos de casos muy intrigantes, me recordó un poco a las series de CSI y otras series de policías o detectives.

Como se podría esperar de un titulo en el cual básicamente somos un operador de computadora, casi todo el gameplay se desarrolla con el Mouse, disponemos de herramientas en el terminal del FDI para poder analizar fotografías, videos, revisar en bases de datos a las personas, utilizar programas para analizar evidencias y mas herramientas similares para poder analizar toda la información que nos envían los agentes de campo y tratar de dar con el sospecho del crimen o encontrar alguna irregularidad en las evidencias. También con el terminal vamos interactuando con un hacker quien además de chantajearnos para conseguir un favor en un caso especial, también nos empieza a mostrar un poco sobre los secretos del FDI.

Toda la estética visual de The Operator es simplemente llamativa y adictiva, la estética del terminal del FDI con un aspecto minimalista y un poco retro, consigue ser bastante llamativa y envolvente, te hace sentir como un verdadero operador de alguna agencia del gobierno de los años 90´. El aspecto más llamativo son las fotografías de los personajes y hasta los propios videos que envían los agentes de campo, tiene un nivel de realismo bastante alto y los videos realmente se sienten como videos de cámaras de seguridad del siglo pasado, hace que la sensación de inmersión en la aventura sea muy emocionantes y entretenida. Tanto que incluso llegas a dudar si realmente sean imágenes destinadas para el videojuego o hasta incluso sean simplemente imágenes verdaderas buscadas en internet.

Algo interesante es la dificultad, al inicio es bastante fácil y directo cada objetivo pero a medida que avanzas debes ir haciendo acciones mas complejas y un poco extensas con todo el material que te envían por misión, varias herramientas tienen una guía para leer y tratar de entender lo que debes hacer para completar el objetivo, y aunque contamos con un botón de ayuda, muchas veces son ayudas bastante simples o que solamente te dicen que herramientas debes usar e igualmente debes tratar de entender todo lo que necesitas hacer con la herramientas u opciones del terminal para poder avanzar.
Otro aspecto bastante interesante en The Operator es que al parecer también es un videojuego con varios caminos, en varios momentos tenemos conversaciones con diferentes opciones de respuesta, puedes escoger trabajar directamente con el hacker para descubrir la verdad de todo el misterio de la FDI o por otra parte simplemente contarles la verdad sobre que el hacker esta tomando el control de tu ordenador y te esta pidiendo favores, parece que según las decisiones que tomemos la aventura puede tener diferentes resultados. Sin dudas The Operator es un videojuego que puede parecer sencillo, pero que rápidamente llama la atención del jugador.
