# **When You Can’t Keep a Promise**

This topic reopens a wound that will never fully heal, because I can't help but feel remorse every time I think about it.

Sometimes, we are the very ones who break our promises, even if we had every intention of keeping them. I'm guilty of that, and it still hurts that I didn't make more of an effort to follow through.

But life is a rollercoaster—or at least mine was—and that contributed to my inability to stay faithful to my promise.

That’s why I understand people when they say they meant to but couldn’t. Of course, as long as they have reasonable grounds for having failed to uphold their promises.

This leads me to think that we should be much more thoughtful and protective of our word, and carefully weigh every detail before making a promise.

Because I believe the majority of broken promises stem from this: from not having reflected on the capacity to fulfill what was promised, given life’s ever-changing circumstances.

In my case, the promise was a very serious one: a friend who was going to work in Spain for a long time entrusted me with looking after her children—being there for them and helping them during her maternal absence.

Inside, I had every intention of being the friend who would stay close to her children, who could advise and guide them through their university years, which coincided with the absence of their mother figure.

But my life took a sharp turn. The company I had worked at for six years was shutting down the division where I provided services—I lost that small sense of security a stable job brings.

On top of that, I had many outstanding university courses to complete, and not long before, I had lost my brother.

In that whirlwind of events, I completely forgot my promise. The stress of job interviews, changing schedules, and several moves over those years made me selfishly focus on myself.

To this day, I believe that even visiting my friend’s house once a week, talking to her children, checking in on them, and trying to guide them as best I could would have helped me honor that promise I made—and broke.

That’s why I’ve stopped saying “I promise” and replaced it with “I’ll do my best.” Is it vague? Yes, but at least we aren’t giving anyone false hope or creating expectations that we may not be able to fulfill.

Besides, as I often say jokingly, it’s always better to deliver a pleasant surprise than a disappointment. Promises have a high chance of ending in the latter, but if instead of promising something we simply say we’ll try, we may just deliver a lovely surprise rather than a bitter letdown—especially when dealing with children or older adults, who tend to be much more sensitive.

# Cuando no puedes mantener una promesa

Este tema me reabre una herida que nunca cicatrizará del todo, porque no puedo evitar sentir remordimientos cada vez que pienso el asunto.

Algunas veces, somos nosotros mismos quienes rompemos nuestras promesas, aunque hayamos tenido toda la intención de cumplirlas. Soy culpable de ello, y hasta hoy me duele no haber hecho mayor esfuerzo para cumplirla.

Pero la vida es una montaña rusa, o al menos mi vida fué una montaña rusa, y eso ayudó a que no pudiera ser fiel a mi promesa.

Es por esa razón, que entiendo a la gente cuando dice que tuvo la intención pero no pudo. Por supuesto, siempre y cuando tenga motivos razonables para haber fallado a sus promesas.

Eso me lleva a pensar, que deberíamos ser mucho más reflexivos y celosos de nuestra palabra, y medir y sopesar cada detalle antes de hacer una promesa.

Porque creo que la mayor cantidad de promesas rotas se debe a esto, a no haber reflexionado sobre la capacidad de llegar a lo prometido, dadas las circunstancias cambiantes de la vida.

En mi caso, la promesa era muy seria, ya que una amiga que iba a irse a trabajar a España un largo tiempo, me encomendó que viera por sus hijos, que estuviera pendiente de ellos, y que los ayudara durante la ausencia materna.

En mi interior, tenía toda la intención de ser la amiga que estuviera cerca de sus hijos, que pudiera aconsejar y guiarlos durante su etapa universitaria, que coincidía con la falta de la figura de la madre.

Pero mi vida dió un gran giro. La empresa en la que llevaba trabajando 6 años cerraba la división en la que prestaba servicios, me quedé sin esa pequeña estabilidad que brinda un trabajo seguro.

Además de eso, tenía pendientes muchas materias de la universidad, y también hacía poco había perdido a mi hermano.

En esa vorágine de sucesos, se me olvidó por completo mi promesa. El estrés de las entrevistas de trabajo, cambios de horarios y varias mudanzas durante esos años hicieron que egoístamente me enfocara en mi.

Al día de hoy pienso que un día a la semana podría haber visitado la casa de mi amiga, hablar con sus hijos, ver que estuvieran bien, y tratar de guiarlos en lo que pudiera, hubiera servido para tratar de cumplir esa promesa hecha y rota.

Por eso, he dejado de decir "lo prometo" y reemplazando esa frase por "haré todo lo posible". Es ambigua? Sí, pero al menos no estamos dando falsas esperanzas a nadie, ni creando expectativas que luego posiblemente no podamos llenar.

Además, como suelo decir en plan humorístico, siempre es mejor dar una sorpresa grata que una decepción. Las promesas tienen altas probabilidades de acabar en lo segundo, pero si en lugar de prometer algo, decimos simplemente que lo intentaremos, podemos llegar a causar una grata sorpresa, en lugar de una amarga decepción, en especial si tratamos con niños o con personas ancianas, que suelen ser mucho más sensibles.
