Holiii, quise hacer este blog debido a que me sorprende la cantidad de gente que se asombra de lo educado que es Rhaegar, tanto que me han hecho comentarios como <em>"parece un perro entrenado"</em> o <em>"hace más caso que un niño"</em>.

Debido a estos comentarios he entendido que educar un gato es una tarea difícil para algunos y por eso quisiera compartir mis pocos conocimientos o las herramientas que a mí me han funcionado tanto con Rhaegar como con María Antonia.

<center><div class="phishy">Debo destacar que este post me voy a concentrar más en la crianza y educación de Rhaegar debido a que ya yo tengo dos años sin ver a M.A y por lo que sé, ya no es tan educada.</div></center>

Para empezar, debo aclarar que la educación de Rhaegar a mí se me ha hecho sumamente fácil debido a la gran conexión que tengo con él y por el hecho, muy importante acá, de que yo a él lo tengo, literalmente, desde que nació; así que es mucho más fácil enseñar a un bebé que a un gato adulto con mañas, pero no imposible.

No soy una profesional, cabe destacar, pero el convivir con tres gatos adultos y dos bebés, me han dado algo de conocimiento.

Lo primero que entendí que es los gatos son muy rutinarios, si tú le preestableces una rutina diaria a los mininos, será muy difícil que hagan cosas que no deben; las primeras cosas que yo le enseñé a Rhaegar desde pequeño fueron:

<li>Horarios de comida</li>
<li>No velar ni pedir comida fuera de su horario</li>
<li>Porciones de comida</li>
<li>Horarios de sueño</li>
<li>Horarios de juego</li>
<li>Llamarlo de una manera específica (sea nombre, silbido, etc...)</li>
<li>No arañar muebles o a las personas, a menos que se sienta atacado</li>
<li>No buscar peleas, mas sí defender su territorio</li>
<li>Hacer sus necesidades fuera de la casa (yo no uso caja de arena)</li>
<li><strong>NO RECIBIR COMIDA DE EXTRAÑOS</strong></li>
</ol>

<center><div class="phishy">Punto Uno: Horarios de Comida</div></center>

Cuando estaba pequeño, le daba de comer tres veces al día, generalmente, cuando preparábamos nuestra comida, preparábamos la de todos los gatos, pero eso incitaba a velarnos la comida; cuando me mudé le establecí un horario de comida y le reduje a dos veces al día nada más; al principio era de 6 am  a 9 pm, pero ahora que no tengo que salir de casa para trabajar, le sirvo su comida a las 10 am y la cena a las 10 pm.

<center><div class="phishy">Punto Dos: No Velar</div></center>

Esto ha sido lo más difícil de todo, debido a que es muy complicado darles entender a los animales en general que no deben pedir comida; sin embargo, para estos casos sí se necesita el carácter, cada que el me maulla pidiéndome comida, le hablo fuerte y le digo "<strong>¡No!</strong>" y si es necesario, le doy un golpe suave en la cabeza para que entienda.

Trato en lo posible de nunca pegarle, primero porque me hace sentir fatal y segundo, porque la mayoría de las veces ellos no entienden y sienten que los estás lastimando adrede; siempre trato de darle a entender con el tono de voz.

<center><div class="phishy">Point One: Feeding Schedule</div></center>

Los gatos son animales que comen hasta reventar, ellos no paran de comer, así que se les debe controlar la cantidad de comida que ingieren; mucho más si son gatos de apartamento, que generalmente no tienen mucha actividad física; o si son gatos que están esterilizados, como es mi caso.

Al principio yo no le tenía un control, debido a que era un bebé y que vivíamos en una casa bastante grande con un patio enorme, así que tenía demasiado espacio para ejercitarse; luego de mudarme, el espacio se redujo considerablemente, pero mantenía su actividad, sin embargo, tenía que empezarlo a acostumbrar a ingerir una cantidad moderada de comida debido a que lo iba a esterilizar y es bien sabido que cuando se esterilizan a los animales, estos tienden a engordar y yo detesto un gato obeso, eso es una tortura para ellos.

La dieta principal de Rhaegar consiste en:

<ol>
<li>Media taza de arroz</li>
<li>Un tercio de taza de gatarina</li>
</ol>

Yo le voy alternando la gatarina con puré de sardina fresca, pollo en tiras y/o caldo de pollo. Evito a toda costa darle harinas como la pasta, el pan y ese tipo de comidas, debido a que eso lo estriñe.

<center><div class="phishy">Point Three: Portions</div></center>

Cats are animals that eat until they burst, they don't stop eating, so you have to control the amount of food they eat; much more if they are apartment cats, who generally don't have much physical activity; or if they are cats that are sterilized, as is my case.

At the beginning I didn't control him, because he was a baby and we lived in a big house with a huge yard, so he had too much space to exercise; after I moved, the space was reduced considerably, but he kept his activity, however, I had to start getting him used to eat a moderate amount of food because I was going to sterilize him and it is well known that when animals are sterilized, they tend to get fat and I hate an obese cat, that is torture for them.

Rhaegar's main diet consists of:

<li>Half a cup of rice</li>
<li>One third cup of catnip</li>
</ol>

I alternate the catnip with mashed fresh sardines, shredded chicken and/or chicken broth. I avoid at all costs to give him flours like pasta, bread and those kind of foods, because it makes him constipated.

Este ha sido el punto donde más estricta he sido, debido a que él duerme conmigo y si él pasa una noche con hiperactividad, me afecta directamente a mí.

Para solventar esto, le establecí un horario de sueño y lo acostumbré a ciertas señales que le indican que ya es hora de cerrar la puerta del cuarto.

No es ningún secreto que los gatos son animales nocturnos y que pasan la mayor parte del día durmiendo, lo que hice fue voltearle eso; lo mantengo activo durante el día, dejándolo tomar pequeñas siestas para no perjudicar su ciclo de sueño y en las noches, cuando cierro la puerta de mi cuarto, él ya entiende que es hora de dormir. Rhaegar duerme corrido, es muy muy de verdad muy extraño cuando me despierta a mitad de la noche, la verdad, eso solo pasaba al principio pero era por falta de costumbre.

Ya esto es algo que ni siquiera tengo que supervisar debido a que ya se volvió parte de su día a día y él solo lo hace sin tener que decirle nada.

<center><div class="phishy">Point Four: Sleep Schedule</div></center>

This has been the point where I have been the strictest, because he sleeps with me and if he spends a night with hyperactivity, it affects me directly.

To solve this, I established a sleep schedule for him and got him used to certain signals that tell him it is time to close the bedroom door.

It's no secret that cats are nocturnal animals and spend most of the day sleeping, what I did was turn that around for him; I keep him active during the day, letting him take short naps so as not to impair his sleep cycle and at night, when I close my bedroom door, he already understands that it's time to sleep. Rhaegar sleeps all the time, it is very very very very strange when he wakes me up in the middle of the night, to be honest, that only happened at the beginning but it was because of lack of habit.

Now this is something that I don't even have to supervise because it has become part of his daily routine and he just does it without me having to tell him anything.

Este punto es muy importante y me he dado cuenta que muchos Karen's no lo practican; una de las maneras en que tú creas y fortaleces ese vinculo con tu minino es con el juego, por eso es que los gatos juegan tanto entre ellos cuando pertenecen a una misma manada.

Admito que yo no juego tanto con Rhaegar como me gustaría, pero si trato, por lo menos, una vez al día de jugar con él. Yo no le he comprado juguetes a él porque se aburre muy rápido de los juguetes convencionales, yo le hice uno, que hasta ahora, es su favorito; consiste en un palo de madera resistente, el cual le amarré unas cintas de tela gruesa para que él las persiga, a esas cintas le agregué un cascabel para que le llamé más la atención. Cuando tiene mucha energía, le dejó el juguete a su libertad  para que él lo muerda y rasguñe.

Esta es una de las maneras en que lo mantengo activo, le ejercito sus instintos de caza y refuerzo el vinculo que tengo con él.

<center><div class="phishy">Point Five: Playtime</div></center>

This point is very important and I've noticed that many Karen's don't practice it; one of the ways you create and strengthen that bond with your kitty is with play, that's why cats play so much with each other when they belong to the same herd.

I admit that I don't play with Rhaegar as much as I would like to, but I do try at least once a day to play with him. I haven't bought toys for him because he gets bored very quickly with conventional toys, I made him one, which so far, is his favorite; it consists of a sturdy wooden stick, which I tied some thick cloth ribbons for him to chase, to those ribbons I added a rattle so that he gets more attention. When he has a lot of energy, I leave the toy at his liberty for him to chew and scratch.

This is one of the ways I keep him active, exercise his hunting instincts and strengthen the bond I have with him.

Con este punto me estoy refiriendo a enseñarle que depende del nombre, forma o tono en que se le llama, es para algo en específico; no sé cómo explicarlo bien así que prefiero dar ejemplos:

<li>La hora de la comida: Uso el pote donde guardo su gatarina como una especie de maraca</li>
<li>A la hora de dormir: Le silbo de una manera específica</li>
<li>La hora del baño: Le hablo cantando</li>
<li>Cuando hace algo malo: Lo llamo Rhaegar Alejandro con un tono fuerte</li>
<li>Cuando lo ando buscando: Lo llamo por su apodo, Ñeñe</li>
</ol>

Así él ya entiende qué es lo que tiene que hacer o qué va a pasar y sabe cómo debe actuar.

<center><div class="phishy">Point Six: Call him in a Specific Way</div></center>

With this point I am referring to teaching him that depending on the name, form or tone in which he is called, it is for something specific; I don't know how to explain it well so I prefer to give examples:

Este fue el punto más fácil de todos debido a que desde pequeño le prohibí jugar con mis manos o pies, que es un error muy común que cometemos todos alguna vez; esta bien que queramos jugar con ellos y por lo general, lo hacemos con nuestras manos, pero el mensaje que ellos entienden es que ese es su juguete y pueden morderlo o arañarlo cuando les plazca; y como dice el dicho <em>"dale la mano y te agarra el brazo"</em>, va a llegar un punto en que no sabrán distinguir cuando es juego y cuando no, por eso muchos gatos arañan a las personas constantemente, porque creen que es un juego.

Con respecto a los muebles, esto es algo muy fácil de solucionar, siempre y cuando, ataques el problema desde el principio; la solución es comprar uno de esos juguetes especiales para que los gatos aruñen, o, en caso tal esos juguetes sean muy costosos como es mí caso, un palo de madera grueso y resistente puede servir.

Rhaegar una sola vez arañó un mueble y lo castigué, le enseñé que solo debe afilarse las garras en su rasgado y más nunca volvió a tocar los muebles.

<center><div class="phishy">Point Seven: No Scratching</div></center>

This was the easiest point of all because from an early age I forbade him to play with my hands or feet, which is a very common mistake we all make at some point; it' s fine that we want to play with them and usually we do it with our hands, but the message they understand is that this is their toy and they can bite or scratch it whenever they please; and as the saying goes "<em>give him your hand and he takes your arm</em>", there will come a point when they will not know when it is a game and when it isn't, that's why many cats scratch people constantly, because they think it's a game.

With respect to the furniture, this is something very easy to solve, as long as you attack the problem from the beginning; the solution is to buy one of those special toys for cats to scratch, or, in case those toys are very expensive as it is my case, a thick and resistant wooden stick can be useful.

Rhaegar once scratched a piece of furniture and I punished him, I taught him that he should only sharpen his claws on his scratching and he never touched the furniture again.

A mí en lo particular, no me gusta que el Ñeñe ande peleando con otros gatos y, aunque sé que es algo natural y necesario, es porque él es un gato pequeño a comparación del promedio y los gatos de la zona hasta lo triplican en tamaño, así que está en una muy gran desventaja.

Él antes era muy buscador de pelea porque eso fue lo que aprendió de su hermano mayor Otto, ya saben que los gatos aprenden imitando a otros gatos; al principio me costó mucho, siempre que veía que había otro gato y él buscaba atacarlo, lo agarraba y me lo llevaba lejos, a veces hasta lo encerraba conmigo en el cuarto; ahora, si veía que el otro gato tenía intenciones de entrar al territorio de él, ahí sí lo dejaba que defendiera lo suyo, mas por el hecho de que él nunca ha marcado territorio con orine por la esterilización.

<center><div class="phishy">Point Eight: Don't look for fights</div></center>

For me in particular, I don't like that Ñeñe fights with other cats and, although I know it is something natural and necessary, it' s because he is a small cat compared to the average and the cats in the area are up to three times his size, so he is at a big disadvantage.

He used to be a fight seeker because that is what he learned from his older brother Otto, you know that cats learn by imitating other cats; at the beginning it was very hard for me, whenever I saw that there was another cat and he wanted to attack it, I took him and took him away, sometimes I even locked him with me in the room; now, if I saw that the other cat had intentions of entering his territory, I would let him defend his territory, but for the fact that he has never marked his territory with urine because of the sterilization.

<center><div class="phishy">Punto Nueve: Necesidades Fuera de Casa</div></center>

Este, para mí, ha sido el más fácil y el más importante por el tema de salubridad; gracias a que él creció y pasó la mayor parte de su infancia en la casa del Junquito, él hacía sus necesidades en la tierra del patio, así que nunca existió la necesidad de tener una caja de arena.

Esto cambió cuando me mudé, debido que aquí no hay un patio de tierra, así que tuve que enseñarle a hacer sus necesidades en caja, pero a él nunca le gustó y a mí tampoco, tener ese olor siempre en el cuarto era horrible; un día decidí poner la caja de arena en el techo de la casa para que se secara con el sol y ví que el Ñeñe se sentía cómodo haciendo sus cosas en el techo; un día deje la arena sola en el techo, sin caja y así, progresivamente, fui eliminando la arena y ya no la necesito. Él va por ahí, hace sus necesidades por los techos y se regresa.

Esto fue un beneficio debido a que me ahorro el gasto de la arena y no tengo que estar limpiando siempre la caja, además de que, como la caja estaba en mi cuarto, yo pasaba toda la noche con esos olores dañinos para mí.

<center><div class="phishy">Point Nine: Needs Outside the Home</div></center>

This one, for me, has been the easiest and most important because of the sanitation issue; because he grew up and spent most of his childhood in the Junquito house, he did his business in the dirt in the yard, so there was never a need for a litter box.

This changed when I moved, because there is no dirt yard here, so I had to teach him to do his needs in a box, but he never liked it and neither did I, having that smell always in the room was horrible; one day I decided to put the litter box on the roof of the house to dry with the sun and I saw that Ñeñe felt comfortable doing his things on the roof; one day I left the litter alone on the roof, without a box and so, progressively, I eliminated the litter and I don't need it anymore. He goes around, does his business on the roof and comes back.

This was a benefit because it saves me the expense of the litter and I don't have to clean the box all the time, besides, since the box was in my room, I spent the whole night with those harmful odors for me.

Este, sin dudas, es el punto más importante, porque como se le enseña a los niños, a los animales también hay que enseñarles a nunca recibir comida de extraños.
