<p>Las pistas lo llevaron a recorrer todo aquel envejecido pueblo. Sin embargo, su labor no era en vano, pues le resultó muy útil entrevistar a tantos ancianos que vivieron en la época de la guerra. Todos parecían tener algo que contar al respecto del famoso cofre del duque Valgolf</p>
<p>En la biblioteca, una mujer con el cabello canoso, le respondía amablemente sus intrigantes preguntas.</p>
<p>—¿Conoció usted al duque?</p>
<p>—Oh no, no tuve ese placer —respondió la mujer algo sonrojada.</p>
<p>—¿Pero al menos tuvo algún contacto con él?</p>
<p>—Desde luego, el duque era un ávido lector. Venía una vez por semana a solicitar alguna novela, o algún libro sobre geografía o cultura general. Estaba especialmente interesado en las obras que trataban lenguas antiguas —explicó la anciana.</p>
<p>El investigador frunció el ceño al oírla.</p>
<p>—Espere un momento, acaba de decirme que no conoció usted al duque, pero resulta que venía aquí a diario. No le comprendo —dijo Mannila en tono grave.</p>
<p>La dama pareció preocuparse por la confusión.</p>
<p>—Oh, disculpe usted señor. Cuando preguntó si conocía al duque, pensé que se refería a… usted sabe… esa otra forma de conocer a alguien.</p>
<p>Mannila se frotó la frente algo desesperado.</p>
<p>—Pues ahora sabe a qué me refería exactamente —la corrigió.</p>
<p>—Muchas muchachas estaban detrás del duque, era un buen partido, pero también era un donjuán, por lo que no se le conocía ninguna pretendiente oficial —dijo la mujer y agregó—: Yo solía suspirar cada vez que entraba por esa puerta, con su larga cabellera que caía en los hombros, y su sonrisa galante. Siempre traía ese aroma a cedro salvaje que...</p>
<p>—Es suficiente, señora —la interrumpió Mannila—. ¿Podría indicarme si alguna vez pidió en préstamo este libro?</p>
<p>Le mostró un cuaderno antiguo. Sus páginas estaban amarillentas y llenas de símbolos extraños. En la parte superior de una de ellas figuraba un nombre en perfecto español. Cuando la mujer vio aquel nombre, sus ojos se abrieron completamente y se llevó las manos al rostro.</p>
<p>—¡Oh, pero que cosa… no me acordaba de ese libro en particular! —dijo la mujer.</p>
<p>—¿Se lo prestó alguna vez al duque?</p>
<p>—Sí, pero no recuerdo que lo devolviera nunca.</p>
<p>Mannila puso cara de fastidio. Tenía esperanza de encontrar el libro en aquella vieja biblioteca.</p>
<p>—Es probable que el libro esté en algunos de los estantes del duque —dijo la anciana—, él solía leer sus libros en su bodega de vinos. Era su lugar favorito para leer.</p>
<p>Mannila se inclinó hacia ella con interés.</p>
<p>—¿Cómo sabe usted eso?</p>
<p>La mujer se acercó para hablarle al oído en voz baja.</p>
<p>—Mi amiga Claire, solía acompañar al duque a su bodega… ya sabe… para… pasar un buen rato. Ella me contaba todo lo que hacían allí. Me dijo que él leía en su bodega y tenía un estante con algunas publicaciones.</p>
<p>Mannila le susurró al oído.</p>
<p>—¿Sabe usted donde queda esa antigua bodega?</p>
<p>La mujer asintió.</p>
<p>Mannila tomó nota de la dirección. Se trataba de un apartado callejón en las afueras del pueblo. Reconoció que quedaba justo en el área de la vieja taberna “Las rosas azules”. Guardó su cuaderno y, luego de despedirse de la mujer, partió para el lugar en busca del codiciado libro.</p>
<p>Al llegar, el sitio parecía vandalizado por el tiempo. La anterior bodega que una vez estuviera abarrotada de barriles de vino, y que fuera testigo de las aventuras del duque, era ahora un cuarto lleno de polvo y habitado por alimañas.</p>
<p>Después de remover algunas tablas viejas, Mannila avistó un par de libros a los que apenas se le distinguía el título. Uno de ellos era sobre mapas de costas y cuerpos de agua, pero el otro… el otro llevaba el título que había buscado por meses.</p>
<p>Mannila gritó eufórico al abrirlo y leer en sus páginas la pista que le hacía falta para completar el caso.</p>

The clues led him to go all over that aged town. However, his labor was not in vain, for he found it very useful to interview so many old people who lived during the war. They all seemed to have something to say about Duke Valgolf's famous chest.

In the library, a gray-haired woman was kindly answering his intriguing questions.

-Did you know the duke?

-Oh no, I didn't have that pleasure," the woman answered, blushing.

-But did you at least have some contact with him?

-Of course, the duke was an avid reader. He came once a week to ask for a novel, or a book on geography or general culture. He was especially interested in works dealing with ancient languages," the old woman explained.

The researcher frowned as he listened to her.

-Wait a moment, you just told me that you didn't know the duke, but it turns out that he came here every day. I don't understand you," said Mannila in a serious tone.

The lady seemed to be worried by the confusion.

-Oh, excuse me, sir. When you asked if I knew the duke, I thought you meant... you know... that other way of knowing someone.

Mannila rubbed his forehead in despair.

-Well, now you know exactly what I meant," he corrected her.

-Many girls were after the duke, he was a good catch, but he was also a ladies' man, so no official suitor was known to him," the woman said and added, "I used to sigh every time he came through that door, with his long hair falling on his shoulders, and his gallant smile. She always brought that wild cedar scent that....

-That's enough, ma'am," Mannila interrupted her, "Could you tell me if you ever borrowed this book?

He showed her an old notebook. Its pages were yellowed and full of strange symbols. At the top of one of them was a name in perfect Spanish. When the woman saw that name, her eyes opened wide and she put her hands to her face.

-Oh, what a thing... I didn't remember that particular book! -said the woman.

-Did you ever lend it to the duke?

-Yes, but I don't remember him ever returning it.

Mannila made an annoyed face. She had hoped to find the book in that old library.

-The book is probably on some of the duke's shelves," said the old woman, "he used to read his books in his wine cellar. It was his favorite place to read.

Mannila leaned toward her with interest.

-How do you know that?

The woman leaned closer to speak softly in his ear.

-My friend Claire, she used to accompany the duke to his cellar...you know...to...have a good time. She used to tell me all about what they did there. She told me that he read in his cellar and had a shelf with some publications.

Mannila whispered in his ear.

-Do you know where that old bodega is?

The woman nodded.

Mannila took note of the address. It was a secluded alley on the outskirts of town. She recognized it as being right in the area of the old tavern "The Blue Roses". He put his notebook away and, after saying goodbye to the woman, set off in search of the coveted book.

When he arrived, the place looked vandalized by time. The former wine cellar once crammed with wine barrels, and witness to the Duke's adventures, was now a dusty room inhabited by vermin.

After removing some old boards, Mannila spotted a couple of books with barely distinguishable titles. One was about maps of coasts and bodies of water, but the other... the other bore the title he had been looking for for months.

Mannila shouted euphorically as he opened it and read in its pages the clue he needed to complete the case.
