<p>Querida Ronna.</p>
<p>Son las 10 de la noche aquí, el único momento que tengo disponible para escribirte. Hemos tenido una semana muy difícil. Las caminatas por la selva son cada más largas. Cuando llueve, el fango se mete hasta dentro de los oídos.</p>
<p>Al comienzo pensé que sería una buena idea venir al frente a combatir, incluso pensé que me daría cierto estatus entre mis conocidos, ya sabes, convertirme en héroe o algo parecido.</p>
<p>Pero ver morir a tantas personas me ha afectado mucho. Mi entusiasmo está por el suelo. Solo me concentro en permanecer con vida. Sebastián murió hace un par de días, una granada explotó cerca de él y lo lesionó gravemente.</p>
<p>Eso me hizo padecer un breve episodio de pánico. El teniente me pidió que revisara un sendero, pero me resbale con excremento del algún animal y me caí, así que mi teniente envió a Sebastián en mi lugar. Fue cuando sufrió el ataque. Debí haber muerto yo en su lugar.</p>
<p>No parece que estemos ganando esta guerra. Los hombres que llegan a la base son cada vez más jóvenes. Se nos están acabando los refuerzos y los recursos. El enemigo no tiene intenciones de rendirse.</p>
<p>Por favor, si respondes a esta carta, cuéntame cómo va todo allá. Cuéntame las cosas buenas, las que provoquen una sonrisa. Aquí ya tenemos suficientes noticias malas a diario.</p>

Dear Ronna.

It's 10 o'clock at night here, the only time I have available to write to you. We have had a very difficult week. The walks in the jungle are getting longer and longer. When it rains, the mud gets into your ears.

At first I thought it would be a good idea to come to the front to fight, I even thought it would give me some status among my acquaintances, you know, become a hero or something.

But seeing so many people die has really affected me. My enthusiasm is down. I'm just concentrating on staying alive. Sebastian died a couple of days ago, a grenade exploded near him and injured him badly.

That sent me into a brief episode of panic. The lieutenant asked me to check a trail, but I slipped on some animal droppings and fell, so my lieutenant sent Sebastian in my place. That's when he suffered the attack. I should have died in his place.

It doesn't look like we're winning this war. The men coming into the base are getting younger and younger. We are running out of reinforcements and resources. The enemy has no intention of surrendering.

Please, if you answer this letter, tell me how things are going over there. Tell me the good things, the things that bring a smile to your face. We have enough bad news here on a daily basis.
