Very nice post.  I've been a professional artist all my adult life and I'm now 66.  I've had many detours and setbacks, mostly because of lack of sales and having to work at various jobs at times to catch my breath.  I've shown in the top galleries, and have been collected and published internationally.  I can only add to your fine post that I'm convinced artists have a tough time because today's society isn't very interested in collecting art. Most people don't even consider it.  How many homes have you seen with an art collection, or even one original painting or woodcut or sculpture by a serious artist?  I rarely do.  Artists everywhere should realize that it's not necessarily them.  It's the way society is.  Also, government is at fault with the high taxes and intrusion into our lives.  This money they lose to taxation and complying with regulations might otherwise be spent on art.  One potential buyer actually said to me, "I'd buy one of your paintings but I have to pay my income taxes on the 15th."  I'm not replying to depress anyone.  Rather, to point out the reality of our civilization.  There ARE people who will buy your work, but it's a very small percentage of the population and you have to find ways to reach them.  Thank heavens for the internet!  It's just not necessarily you or your work.  Be sure to consider this, because realizing it will ease your mind.

I guess we all hold our beathe sometimes, I am like you, can go years between being creative and i know its never a good sign

I like ART very, and I like B&W art the most.
I  doing black and white photography.

I passed by an art school today and realized that painted in huge graffiti letters on the side of it is: "Creer, Crear." IOW, Believe and create.

You have to believe in yourself and your vision in order to create. And, curiously, you have to create on a regular basis, as you said, in order to maintain your belief, or faith.

It's a self-reinforcing cycle!

I absolutely love this! The art is gorgeous! I believe everything, It took me 12 years to get good at art! People always have that attitude that it will happen overnight. So they give up.

if you really want to become an artist, I feel that to a certain degree you must suffer long nights of practice. It's not all fun, and it's not meant to be fun! It's about getting  better and building the skills you can more adequately express yourself through the medium you are using. Great post!!

Great art work.

It is well familiar to me. I ran from his art throughout his life. Search and find a job that did not like - of course it did not bring me joy. But a few years ago, I realized that when I paint - I spokoin and happy. I can do it almost always. After a short time my friends have supported - noting that it poluchaeetsya interesting. For me, their approval means a lot. I did not let go of his hands and continued. After a while, I was offered money for my art. Now picture - this is my main income. The most my main teacher and critic is myself. You always want to do better. Again, I dare to presume tools do. Thanks for the article, good luck!

Such gorgeous art! I love the diversity in it, and it's really impressive that you master so many different styles and mediums!! 

I waited all my life before I started doing art, I figured it wasn't any point starting now since every good artist had been drawing since they were a child... But then I just got over that stupid thought, and last year I started drawing, and I love it!!  

Seeing posts like these get me really motivated to learn more and makes me want to try out different mediums and art styles. Thank you for sharing :)

I cant say enough how important every single bullet point of this post is.  The internet can be a wonderful source of inspiration, but it can also be the boon of "there's always someone better at your craft than you are" and it can be incredibly easy to compare yourself or beat yourself up thinking you'll never be as good as that youtuber with a million subs (at least, that's how I've felt every time I look for a tutorial on whatever I'm struggling with).

Thank you for this post. Everything you said is so spot on. Making art can be absolutely depressing. It's tough to put yourself out there and get nothing in return. You're so right that we need to change our expectations and ultimately just do it.
