In the last while I learned a lot of things about how to save money in order to extend your travels even further. The first one was volunteering: exchanging work for hostel accommodation was a deal I liked and used a lot. The second was ‘hitchhiking’: this technique of getting into strangers' cars didn't suit me so well, but I used it on a few occasions nonetheless. And on this last trip I learned another way to save money, and that is to haggle over the prices of things, looking for cheaper rates. <strong>Have you ever done it?</strong>

As a regular attendee of clothing and second-hand fairs, I know what bargaining is all about. At these fairs it is common for the seller to tell you a price, you propose a much lower one and finally you reach a middle ground that works for both of you. pric This is something I've never done because I'm a bit embarrassed to take advantage of a seller who is already selling something cheap. But many people do it and get better offers than the initial ones.

En estas ferias se usa mucho eso de que el vendedor te diga un precio, vos propongas otro mucho más bajo y finalmente lleguen a un valor intermedio que les sirva a ambos. Esto es algo que yo nunca hice porque me da un poco de vergüenza querer sacar ventaja de un vendedor, que de por sí ya está vendiendo algo económico. Pero mucha gente lo hace y obtiene mejores ofertas que las iniciales.

In my position as a hostel receptionist, I've encountered people who tried to haggle with me over the price of their stays. In some establishments, this wasn't allowed, but in others, I had the official price and knew the minimum I could charge in case someone asked for a discount. However, I believe Argentine tourists aren't very good at haggling over accommodations; we simply accept the price and that's it. What they do ask a lot is whether the price is lower in cash than with cards, since taxes are not charged that way. In some cases, it is; in others, the prices are the same for all payment methods.

En algunos establecimientos esto no estaba permitido, pero en otros yo tenía el precio oficial y sabía el precio mínimo que podía cobrarles en caso que alguien pidiera un descuento. Sin embargo, creo que el turista argentino no es muy de regatear precios en alojamientos, simplemente aceptamos el precio que dicen y listo. Lo que si se pregunta mucho es si en efectivo el precio es menor que con tarjetas, ya que de este modo no se cobran impuestos. En algunos casos lo es, en otros, los precios son iguales para todos los medios de pago.

Working at the hostel in Ushuaia, where the number of foreign travelers is considerably higher, almost everyone tried to haggle over the price of accommodation. In that case, my margin for offering a discount wasn't very large (only $1), but they accepted anyway. I understand that traveling halfway around the world and without a huge budget requires careful expense management, so I didn't judge them for wanting better rates.

During my trip to Chile, where I was on the other side of the desk as a tourist and traveling with my companion, who had been traveling for several months before me, I experienced this haggling firsthand. At almost any price offered, we tried to ask for a lower fare. Well, I wasn't used to it, so he asked for every discount, and because of his friendliness and European demeanor, they granted it to him. Chileans were very friendly in that sense, unlike Argentinians, who see you with blond hair and a foreign accent and immediately want to charge you more for everything because of the implicit "gringo tax." 😂

A casi cualquier precio que nos ofrecían, intentabamos pedir una tarifa más baja. Bueno, yo no estaba acostumbrada, así que todos los descuentos los pedía él y por su simpatía y portación de aspecto europeo se lo daban. Los chilenos eran muy amables en ese sentido, a diferencia de los argentinos que te ven rubio y con acento extranjero y ya te quieren cobrar todo más caro debido al implícito "impuesto al gringo". 😂

The truth is that this trip was quite low-cost due to that bargaining, coupled with the fact that we camped for free or at budget campsites several times. I don't think I'll be using bargaining on my next trips, but I liked at least knowing that it's possible in certain cases. Likewise, we Argentinians have a problem with the prices of things: our economy has been so crazy lately that we've lost track of what's expensive and what's cheap. Now my point of reference is knowing whether I can afford something or not, and that ends up defining my budget for everything.

Pienso que el regateo no es algo que vaya a implementar en mis siguientes viajes, pero me gustó al menos saber que en ciertos casos existe la posibilidad. Igualmente nosotros los argentinos tenemos un lío con los precios de las cosas: nuestra economía viene tan disparatada últimamente que hemos perdido la noción de lo caro y lo barato. Ahora mi punto de referencia es saber si puedo pagar por algo o no y eso termina definiendo mis presupuestos para todo.
