¿Ricos? ¡Ja! La verdadera riqueza está en la felicidad

La respuesta de Epicteto a la pregunta de "¿Quién es el hombre rico?" es profunda y significativa. No se refiere a la riqueza material, sino a la riqueza interior, a la satisfacción y la felicidad que se encuentran en la vida.

El hombre rico, según Epicteto, es aquel que está contento con lo que tiene. No necesita acumular posesiones materiales para sentirse feliz. Es capaz de encontrar la alegría en las cosas simples de la vida, como la compañía de sus seres queridos, la belleza de la naturaleza o la satisfacción de un trabajo bien hecho.

El hombre rico también es aquel que es libre de las preocupaciones y los deseos materiales. No se preocupa por lo que piensan los demás ni por las cosas que no puede controlar. Se concentra en vivir el presente y en disfrutar de cada momento.

¿A quién no le han preguntado alguna vez eso de "¿Y tú, de qué vas a ser cuando seas mayor?". La típica pregunta que te lanza tu tía la metiche en las navidades para ponerte nervioso. Y tú, con la edad que tengas, respondes con lo primero que se te viene a la cabeza: médico, abogado, astronauta... ¡Millonario!

Pero, ¿y si la verdadera riqueza no estuviera en tener una cuenta bancaria con más números que la cédula o tu DNI?

**Epicteto, qué ese si sabia **, ya lo decía: **"El hombre rico es el que está contento"**. Y es que, al final, ¿de qué te sirve tener un Ferrari si no tienes tiempo para disfrutarlo? O, peor aún, si te genera tanta ansiedad que no te deja dormir por las noches.

**La felicidad, mis queridos amigos, es la verdadera moneda de cambio**. Y la buena noticia es que, como decía Epicteto, **depende de tres cosas que están en nuestro poder**:

**1. Tu voluntad:** ¿Te levantas por la mañana con ganas de comerte el mundo o con la sensación de que te arrastran al panteon? ¡Actitud, campeón!

**2. Tus ideas:** ¿Ves el vaso medio lleno o medio vacío? ¿Te centras en lo que te falta o en lo que ya tienes? ¡Cambia el chip!

**3. El uso que haces de tus ideas:** ¿Te pones a perseguir tus sueños o te quedas en el sofá lamentándote? ¡A mover el esqueleto!

**En mi caso, cuando me agobio con el trabajo o el dinero, hay una frase que me digo siempre**: **"¡Ya los ricos están contados!"**. Y entre risas, añado: **"Esos los cuentan a las 3 de la tarde. Ya será PA. ¡La próxima mañana será otro día!"**.

Y es que, al final, **la vida es demasiado corta para amargarse por cosas que no podemos controlar**. Mejor centrarnos en lo que sí podemos: **nuestra felicidad**.

## **Wealthy? Pah! True wealth lies in happiness**

**Epictetus' answer to the question "Who is a wealthy man?" is profound and significant.** He is not referring to material wealth, but to inner wealth, to the satisfaction and happiness that are found in life.

**Imagine a short, lame, bald guy who was a slave and then became a master of philosophy.** That was Epictetus! Epictetus taught that happiness does not depend on what you have, but on how you live. For him, the important thing was to be free from the opinions of others and to live a virtuous life.


**According to Epictetus, a wealthy man is one who is content with what he has.** He does not need to accumulate material possessions to feel happy. He is able to find joy in the simple things in life, such as the company of loved ones, the beauty of nature, or the satisfaction of a job well done.

**A wealthy man is also one who is free from worries and material desires.** He does not worry about what others think or about things he cannot control. He focuses on living in the present and enjoying every moment.

**Who hasn't been asked at some point "What are you going to be when you grow up?"** The typical question your nosy aunt asks you at Christmas to make you nervous. And you, at whatever age you are, answer with the first thing that comes to mind: doctor, lawyer, astronaut... Millionaire!

**But what if true wealth isn't about having a bank account with more numbers than your ID?**

**Epictetus, who knew a thing or two**, said it best: **"The wealthy man is the one who is content."** And at the end of the day, what good is it to have a Ferrari if you don't have time to enjoy it? Or worse, if it gives you so much anxiety that you can't sleep at night.

**Happiness, my dear friends, is the true currency.** And the good news is that, as Epictetus said, **it depends on three things that are in our power**:

**1. Your will:** Do you wake up in the morning eager to take on the world or feeling like you're being dragged to the grave? Attitude, champion!

**2. Your thoughts:** Do you see the glass half full or half empty? Do you focus on what you lack or on what you already have? Change your mindset!

**3. The use you make of your ideas:** Do you start chasing your dreams or do you stay on the couch feeling sorry for yourself? Get moving!

**In my case, when I get overwhelmed with work or money, there's one phrase I always say to myself:** **"There are already enough rich people!"** And between laughs, I add: **"They count them at 3 in the afternoon. It will be PA by then. Tomorrow morning will be another day!"**

And at the end of the day, **life is too short to be bitter about things we can't control.** Better to focus on what we can: **our happiness**.
