In the summer of 2022 we travelled to Coburg Germany as part of our trip to Bavaria. We were there in the early afternoon and on this particular day it was quite hot outside.  We decided to stop at a cafe for a drink and a short rest in the shade of the cafe umbrellas. The Cafe we chose was located in the beautiful Marktplaz square and was aptly called Kaffeehaus, which I'm sure that you can guess exactly what that translates to. It's funny how so many different countries have so many similar sounding names ~~perhaps a little foreshadowing there on whats to come...~~.  Given the heat of the day we both decided that an iced coffee was in order, so without bothering to look at the menu we confidently asked for just that when our waitress came around to take our order.  "Two ice coffees please," in English of course, not even bothering to attempt to speak German, as any good English tourist would do.  My wife asked me to take a picture of her hat while we waited. She loves that hat, though I don't really know why.  A few moments later the waitress set our drinks down on the table and promptly walked away. I looked at the drinks and then looked at my wife. "Is that what we ordered? It looks liked there is ice cream in it..."  And then it dawned on me. Ice cream in Germany is simply called "Eis." It seemed that we had in fact gotten exactly what we had ordered, ice cream and coffee.  The beverage ended up being absolutely delicious, one of those "happy mistakes" as Bob Ross would say. I scarfed it down in a matter of seconds and immediately decided that at that point on, "Eis coffee" would be my new drink of choice in Germany. ## <center>Well thats it for now. Haha that's a fair point. I didn't know that about the Dutch spelling. Interesting. No we didn't give the dog anything. He wpuld sit on my when we eat lunch a lot of times and we didn't want him to expect food from the table and beg at every meal. He generally just did a quick sniff and then settled down.

The idea of floating ice cream in coffee came from a large influx of Italian immigrants, many of whom opened ice cream parlors after a few years in Germany. So they set the standard of ice cream recipes on offer. Eiskaffee is a variation of the Italian "Affogato al Caffè" dessert. If you happen to be in such an Italian ice cream parlor, you might want to order a "Caffè Freddo" instead, which is coffee with ice cubes. You might also try to order a "Café Glacé" like in France or Switzerland. The term "Iced Coffee" is catching on slowly, too, but there is that risk of confusion, i.e. it sounds like "Eiskaffee". It's safest to explain what you want, though. Also, some add milk into iced coffees. In the Blackforest region, they add a shot of Kirsch schnaps to their Eiskaffee - very tasty. Honestly, I can't think of a German term for iced coffee. Fun fact: in my region, "kalter Kaffee" (cold coffee) denotes a soda drink made with Coca Cola and Fanta (the European orange soda, not the American root beer). While we're on the subject, here is a summer trick for you: Make a good, stiff coffee, sweeten to taste, fill it in ice cube molds, and freeze it. Quick and delicious to pile up in a glass and pour milk over!

So many ways to drink coffee lol. People add all sorts of different things to coffee depending on the country - orange, lemon, avacado lol. I've tried coconut milk - thats quite good. These are great tips and interesting information on the different varieties and history. I'm intrigued by the Black Forest version. I guess that goes along with their famous cake. I've heard of the freezing coffee into cubes trick but I've never actually tried it out. We only ever add regular ice cubes to normal coffee. I have to try it one day.
