21.9% of Americans speak a language that isn’t English at home. 
11% was that number in 1980.

Figuring out is largely due to the demographic change, which lead to an increase in the Hispanic population. 

13% of the US speaks Spanish at home and not English. 

In 1980, the US had a population of 226 million. 
14.6 million were hispanic. 
6.4% 

# Today, 18% of the US population is Hispanic, with America being 330 million people and 59 million people being Hispanic. 

A growth of 304%. 

I saw a poll this morning asking people if the US should require speaking English to live here.

374,000 voted 

52% said no
37% said yes

Being pro immigration, I’m happy the majority didn’t support that requirement, but feel with a growing Hispanic, Asian & Middle Eastern population, where about 25-30% of Americans might speak a non English at home by 2050, it’s important to make some defense of this. 

# First thing to look at is the realization most of America hasn’t and won’t be impacted. 

18% of America as a whole is Spanish. 

That said, it changes a lot when going state to state.

39% of California is Hispanic. 
38% of Texas. 
32% of Arizona. 
29% of Nevada. 
26% of Florida. 

To show why this is important, California has about 40 million people, with nearly 40% of that population being Hispanic. 

That’s 16 million people. 

Showing 27% of the US Hispanic population is based in California. 

Looking at the top five states for Hispanic, it has that group hit 60% of the total US population for Hispanic people. 

The reason this is important to know is for the vast majority of Americans, they’ll never have an issue with people not speaking English or any confusion.

For the places that have heavy Spanish speaking communities, they are more concentrated within themselves and it doesn’t make things a huge challenge. Also, in many cases such as Southern California & Texas, the Hispanic population has been there longer than any other. 

This shows people having a primary language that isn’t English isn’t an issue.
 
# The other point is just the benefits immigrants bring. 

25.5% of small businesses are immigrant founded.
55% of billion dollar companies were immigrant founded or co-founded.
25% of scientist are immigrants. 

***Immigration helps the economy at all levels.*** 

The case of requiring English just makes an unneeded wall, where most people will just learn English anyway eventually.
