In parts [I](https://steemit.com/society/@lenskonig/fear-of-the-unknown-treehouse-part-i) and [II](https://steemit.com/society/@lenskonig/fear-of-the-unknown-treehouse-part-ii) I looked at my fear of deception and asked why my friend has agreed to build a treehouse—for a stranger—armed with limited woodwork experience.

A number of things have happened.

<h1>Progress</h1>The lumber was rotten. Our Man was literally building a house out of wooden cake. It would not take drills or screws like a well-seasoned timber. But this was no obstacle. I have news:

The treehouse is complete!

One could say that it's just a wooden platform with a fence. But it looks damn fine. This brought me to an epiphany: **Clients may not know what they want.**

Our Man was asked to put in glass windows but convinced them it was a bad idea. This meant that he did not even need to build walls. What has resulted is a beautiful cross between a lookout platform and a treehouse. In his own words: A *Lookhouse.*

Our Man had gone to this secluded paradise to relax and gently build a treehouse. But he was given rotten wood, a blunt saw and a vague design brief. This made him uncomfortable, and rightly so. He knew the clients could not possibly care much for the treehouse’s structural integrity. So he did the best he could, with safety at the fore.

He became Christopher Walken.

And then he escaped.

The strangers gave him a sketchy, impossible task. He could not stand their lack of interest in safety and integrity, and what that said about their psyche. So he finished the job, then fled. I applaud him.

This all goes to show something very, very… *very* important.

<h1>Analysis</h1>

What I saw before as deception was probably just self-confidence.

Stranger: *“Can you build a treehouse?”*

Our Man: *“Yes, I can build a treehouse.”*

In the words of Doc Brown from Back to the Future:

<blockquote>If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.</blockquote>

Our Man could build a treehouse. Anyone can build a treehouse. Some of us just don't know it yet.

As an Uber driver I feel I am taking my first foray into self-employment. My first true glimpse of offering a service where I alone am responsible (barring any Uber technical issues). Each passenger represents a single, short contract. I was scared when I began, and now I know what I’m doing. There are still navigational blips and other unforeseen problems. But that’s life.

I have learned a lot from my friend’s experience with the treehouse. I have learned that bravery is paramount. That every task has an element of the unknown. And most importantly: if I want to build a house, I should not ask anyone how to do it. I should just build a house.

<h1>Epilogue</h1>Our Man is now safely back in civilisation. As safe as civilisation can be, that is. He has decided to never construct another building. That chapter is closed. At this time he will likely receive different stimuli and react to the most positive among them. Good luck, Our Man. Thank you for everything.

I too must act on positive stimuli. It’s time to grab my work-life by the balls. It's time to value myself as a useful member of society. Thank you for joining me on this journey of discovery.
