Social media Chatting,a double edged sword.

Am grateful for technology and how far it has gone. We now have real time social media apps like whatsapp, telegram and the likes.Back in those days there was nothing like this. The use of email is cool but then it still has some lags except in some rare occasion. I must say, we are indeed blessed to have all these at our disposal.

Chatting online has a lot of advantages which I have personally benefited from and still do today but then it also has it disadvantages... smiles. I hope you were not expecting me to overlook this part, it's just the fact. I will be sharing some of the ways chatting online has benefitting me and still benefits me today.

- Keeping in Touch

Like I said earlier, chatting on most social media is a real time conversation. It has helped me keep in touch with friends and family. When chatting with friends and *famz* it's as though we are together having the conversation. Presently am far from home but then I still talk to my friends and family like am with them. With the help of voice note and video on apps like whatsapp one can have a very wonderful chatting and experience.

- Information.

Some of the information that changed my life were gotten from chatting on some of these social apps apps. Valuable information has gone beyond the dailies (newspaper). Valuable information are now been circulated online, While chatting you could spot opportunities.

Although one need to be careful so you don't fall for some cheap scam in the name of online opportunities. The fact is that many of these scammers know that people get real opportunities online and then devise a means as well to take advantage of people's ignorance or negligence.

- Meeting new friends.

Online chatting is also an avenue to meet new friends. We meet people online the same way we meet people offline. Online is a world of it own, although there are some who operate on both world while there are others who operate on one which could either be offline or online. Either ways we get to meet people online by chatting and exploring just the way we meet new folks on the street, market,school and so on.

<center>**Downsides**</center>

There are side effects to chatting as well. Is there anything which has advantages but without disadvantages? I doubt it. I have personally experienced some downside with chatting which include...

- Addiction.

The truth is we can't shy away from this part. If you're really into online chatting and exploration, you would understand this part better. There is this tendency of addiction
You just find yourself entangled in this act.

Sometimes you don't even have anything to do online but then you still hang around to see if you could just meet find someone to talk to. Not meeting someone can also lead to depression or sometimes frustration because that place has become a place which gives you some kind of satisfaction.

- Subtle Time Stealer

Chatting steals people's time in a subtle way when not properly managed. When you start, you seems to be in control of the discussion but it get to a point when the discussion goes beyond you, maybe because it became Interesting and engaging or maybe for some other reasons.

You might have planned your activities for the day but end up not carrying out the activities because you got caught up in a chat with a friend. This has happened to me many times and that's the reason why I don't initiate chat when I don't have enough time to spare.

There are many other downside to chatting online but then I will like to wrap it up here so that I don't bore you with too many talks. I believe I have been able to share with you the advantages and disadvantages of chatting. Thanks for your time.

Hehe... Social media can be a time stealer indeed. And it sure as hell can be very subtle. From ten minutes, you would spend an hour. And then four hours. Before you know it the day is over. Very crazy!

You're very correct. Am glad you can relate with this. I guess we all have been caught up in this at some point...many of us have learnt to draw lines so we don't keep getting entangled in the subtle time stealer

Like with everything else, you need to know where to draw a line. If you're conscious about the pros and cons, it's easy to stay withing your own rules.

One thing unavoidable when you chat on social media is the fact that it steals your time and it happens so unconscioulsy that by the time you realise it, you are unable to make up for the stolen time.
