I have been following a precise end-of-season strategy for many months now, which is based on renting Splinterlands cards. 
During the last two days before the end of the season of Splinterlands I rent cards useful in battle that allow me to increase my power score and exceed 500000 points in order to try to reach the Champion leagues of Splinterlands.
Until now my end of season strategy has always been profitable but this season I will stop it because under the current conditions it is no longer convenient.
I will resume my card rental activity only when the conditions will be profitable again.
So today instead of publishing my usual post about my end of season rental strategy I thought I would write a post explaining why I chose not to rent cards and decided to use only my cards.

# <center>When to rent Splinterlands cards and when not to!</center>

The reasons that motivate a player to rent cards can be different, such as:
- to **increase their power score** in order to advance in a league and/or receive greater rewards (daily and end of season)
- to increase the battle strength of one's own collection of cards in order to **increase the rating score** or to try to arrive in the rewarded positions of the league tables.
- increase the strength of your card collection to participate in one or more tournaments and try to get in the award-winning positions (ITM).

Whatever the reason that pushes a player to rent some cards, the goal to reach is always linked to one or more rewards.

The rule I follow when I have to decide whether to use the rental market or not is always the same and it is a simple rule:

#### <center>If the estimated value of the rewards obtainable thanks to the rental of the cards is higher than the cost of renting it is convenient to rent otherwise not!</center>

So the first element to consider and know is the value of the rewards.

## <center>Chests and DEC tokens</center>

The rewards closely related to playing Splinterlands are **chests** and **token DEC**.
The chests are the rewards obtainable from completing daily quests and are also the end-of-season rewards of Splinterlands.
DEC tokens are obtained as a reward for each battle victory and can also be found in chests.

Today, September 14, 2021, **1 DEC** token is worth **$0.00576** and **1000 DEC tokens** are worth **$5.76**.

Chests do not have a specific value because they can contain 3 types of rewards: potions, DEC tokens and Cards (NFT).
For this reason, the value of a chest is not a certain value but is an **estimated value**.
The useful site https://www.splintercards.com/tool-lootchest.html created by @tehox calculates the estimated value of each chest.

The estimated value of a chest is **210 DEC tokens**.

## <center>Comparison of Estimated Reward Value - Rental Cost</center>

In order to evaluate whether renting a certain number of cards is an action that leads to a positive estimated profit or not, it is important to always compare the estimated value of the rewards that can be obtained by renting cards with the cost of renting them.

I make now two examples in order to show how to estimate the convenience or less of the rental of the cards.

#### <center>First Example: Player who is in Bronze League III.</center>
<center>Rating Score: 300 points</center>
<center>Power Score 100 points.</center>
<center>Daily Mission Reward: 1 chest.</center>
<center>End of Season Reward: 5 chests.</center>

As you can see from the following image, if the player in the example wants to receive one more chest per day, he has to be in the Silver III league.

To get to the Silver III league he must 
- increase his rating score by 700 points
- increase his power score by 14900 points.



If the player finds one or more cards to rent that allow him to reach the Silver III league access requirements and **spends more than 210 DEC tokens** per day he will make a wrong choice because his choice leads to a **negative expected profit**.
As a personal choice in the condition of the player in the example I would have spent at most half of that: 105 DEC tokens per day.

#### <center>Second example: my situation.</center>

There are only a few hours left until the end of the season and my situation is as follows:
- I have a power score of 253160 points
- I have a rating score of 2845 points

- I am in the Diamond I league and at the end of the season I will receive a reward of 40 chests.

I could choose to try to reach Champion III league to double my end of season reward (40 chests -> 80 chests) and I would have to:
- increase my power score by 246840 points
- exceed the rating score by 3700 points

40 chests have an estimated value of **8400 DEC tokens** (210 DEC tokens x 40 chests)

Theoretically spending 8400 DEC tokens on card rentals and reaching Champion III league is equivalent to having an estimated expected profit of 0.

In this season finale I could spend half of 8400 DEC tokens for card rental (4200 DEC tokens) so as to keep a good profit margin and not risk ending up with a real profit equal to O but in the end I decided to stop and will play with only my cards.

## <center>The reasons for my choice</center>

This season I decided to stop at 40 chests for **three reasons**:
- the prize for victory in battle has been lowered by about 1/4
In the previous season I was earning about 40 DEC tokens per win while today I get about 10 DEC tokens per win.
Many battles are needed to cover a good part of the rental cost.
- The average cost of renting cards is very high and has not yet adjusted to the new rewards received in battle.
If I wanted to rent the same 35 cards that allowed me to reach Champion III league two seasons ago I would have to spend over 8400 DEC tokens.
- Attempting to climb from my current league (Diamond III) to the Champion III league takes time, and time always counts.

For the three reasons stated above, I have not found it profitable to try to reach Champion III league and for the first time I will not be renting cards this season finale.

The current costs of renting the strongest and most useful cards in battle are definitely out of the market according to my calculations but I am convinced that they will be lowered in the next season.

If you want to rent cards from the market of Splinterlands my advice is to always calculate the expected and estimated profit of the rewards that you want to get thanks to the rental activity otherwise you will have only lost time and money ;)

Sono molti mesi che seguo una precisa strategia di fine stagione che si basa sul noleggio delle carte di Splinterlands. 
Durante gli ultimi due giorni prima della fine della stagione di Splinterlands noleggio carte utili in battaglia che mi permettono di incrementare il mio punteggio power e superare i 500000 punti.
Fino ad oggi la mia strategia di fine stagione è stata sempre profittevole ma in questa stagione la interromperò perchè in base alle condizioni attuali non è più conveniente.
Riprenderò la mia attività di noleggio delle carte solo quando le condizioni saranno di nuovo profittevoli.
Così oggi invece di pubblicare il mio usuale post sulla mia strategia di noleggio di fine stagione ho pensato di scrivere un post per spiegare i motivi per cui ho scelto di non noleggiare carte e accontentarmi di utilizzare solo le mie carte.

# <center>Quando conviene noleggiare le carte di Splinterlands e quando no!</center>

I motivi che spingono un giocatore a prendere in noleggio delle carte possono essere diversi come:
- aumentare il proprio punteggio power per avanzare di lega e/o ricevere ricompense (giornaliere e di fine stagione) maggiori
- aumentare la forza in battaglia della propria collezione di carte per aumentare il punteggio di rating o per cercare di arrivare nelle posizioni premiate delle classifiche di lega.
- aumentare la forza della propria collezione di carte per partecipare ad uno o più tornei e cercare di arrivare tra le posizioni premiate (ITM).

Qualunque sia il motivo che spinge un giocatore a prendere in noleggio alcune carte l'obbiettivo da raggiungere è sempre collegato ad una o più ricompense.

La regola che seguo io quando devo decidere se ricorrere al mercato di noleggio o meno è sempre la stessa ed è una regola semplice:

#### <center>Se il valore stimato delle ricompense ottenibili grazie al noleggio delle carte è superiore al costo di noleggio conviene noleggiare altrimenti no!</center>

Quindi il primo elemento da considerare e conoscere è il valore delle ricompense.

## <center>Forzieri e token DEC</center>

Le ricompese strettamente legate al gioco di Splinterlands sono i **forzieri** e **token DEC**.
I forzieri sono le ricompense ottenibili dal completamento delle missioni giornaliere e sono anche il premio di fine stagione di Splinterlands.
I token DEC si ottengono come ricompensa per ogni vittoria in battaglia e possono essere trovati anche nei forzieri.

Oggi 14 settembre 2021 un token DEC vale **0.00576 $** e **1000 token DEC** valgono **5.76 $**

I forzieri non hanno un valore preciso perchè possono contenere 3 tipi di premi: pozioni, token DEC e Carte (NFT).
Per questo motivo il valore di un forziere non è un valore certo ma è un **valore stimato**.
L'utile sito https://www.splintercards.com/tool-lootchest.html creato da @tehox calcola il valore di stimato di ogni forziere.

## <center>Confronto Valore Stimato Ricompense - Costo di Noleggio</center>

Per capire se noleggiare un certo numero di carte è un'azione che porta ad un profitto stimato positivo oppure no è importante fare sempre il confronto tra il valore stimato delle ricompense ottenibili grazie al noleggio delle carte e il costo di noleggio da sostenere.

Faccio adesso due esempi per mostrare come valutare la convenienza o meno del noleggio delle carte.

#### <center>Primo Esempio: Giocatore che si trova in lega Bronzo III.</center>
<center>Punteggio di rating: 300 punti</center>
<center>Punteggio Power 100 punti.</center>
<center>Ricompensa Missione Giornaliera: 1 forziere.</center>
<center>Ricompensa Fine Stagione: 5 forzieri.</center>

Come puoi vedere dall'immagine seguente, se il giocatore dell'esempio vuole ricevere un forziere in più al giorno deve arrivare in lega Silver III.

Per arrivare in lega Silver III deve: 
- aumentare il suo punteggio di rating di 700 punti
- deve aumentare il suo punteggio power di 14900 punti. 

Se il giocatore trova una o più carte da noleggiare che gli permettono di raggiungere i requisiti di accesso della lega Silver III e **spende più di 210 token DEC** al giorno farà una scelta sbagliata perchè la sua scelta porta ad un **profitto stimato atteso negativo**.
Io come scelta personale nella condizione del giocatore dell'esempio avrei speso al massimo la metà: 105 token DEC al giorno.

#### <center>Secondo esempio: la mia situazione.</center>

Mancano poche ore alla fine della stagione e la mia situazione è la seguente:
- ho un punteggio power di 253160 punti
- ho un punteggio di rating di 2845 punti

Potevo scegliere di provare a raggiungere la lega Champion III per raddoppiare la mia ricompensa di fine stagione (40 forzieri -> 80 forzieri) e avrei dovuto:
- incrementare il mio punteggio power di 246840 punti
- superare il punteggio power di 3700 punti

40 forzieri hanno un valore stimato di **8400 token DEC** (210 token DEC x 40 forzieri)

In teoria spendere per il noleggio delle carte 8400 token DEC e raggiungere la lega Champion III equivale ad avere un profitto stimato atteso uguale a 0.

In questo finale di stagione potevo spendere la metà di 8400 token DEC per il noleggio delle carte (4200 token DEC) in modo da tenermi un buon margine di profitto e non rischiare di terminare con un profitto reale uguale a O ma alla fine ho deciso di fermarmi e giocherò con solo le mie carte.

## <center>I motivi della mia scelta</center>
***
In questa stagione ho deciso di fermarmi a 40 forzieri per **tre motivi**:
- il premio per vittoria in battaglia è stato abbassato di circa 1/4
Nella precedente stagione guadagnavo circa 40 token DEC a vittoria mentre oggi ottengo circa 10 token DEC a vittoria.
Sono necessarie molte battaglie per coprire una buona parte del costo del noleggio.
- il costo medio di noleggio delle carte è molto alto e non si è ancora adattato ai nuovi premi ricevibili in battaglia.
Se volessi noleggiare le stesse 35 carte che mi hanno permesso di raggiungere due stagioni fa la lega Champion III dovrei spendere più di 8400 token DEC.
- tentare la scalata dalla mia lega attuale (Diamond III) alla lega Champion III richiede tempo e il tempo è sempre da conteggiare.

Per i tre motivi sopra esposti non ho ritenuto profittevole provare a raggiungere la lega Champion III e per la prima volta non noleggerò carte in questo finale di stagione.

I costi attuali di noleggio delle carte più forti e più utili in battaglia sono decisamente fuori mercato secondo i miei calcoli ma sono convinto che si abbasseranno nella prossima stagione.

Se vuoi noleggiare carte dal mercato di Splinterlands il mio consiglio è di calcolare sempre il profitto atteso e stimato delle ricompense che vuoi ottenere grazie all'attività di noleggio altrimenti avrai solo perso tempo e soldi ;)

Thanks for sharing.  I was wondering what the estimated value of a chest was, now I know.  It will help me compare if renting will be beneficial in my case.  I am in bronze and on the surface it would not be a good idea since I need way more power to get to the next level compared to the additional value of the chest that I would receive.

Yes you have to do the calculations well and consider both daily and end of season chests.
In my case, I am in the Diamond league, the cards to go up in Champion league cost a lot and I would spend a lot and I would risk to end the season in deficit between the cost of rented cards and the end of season reward.
If you are in bronze instead you have to see if there are opportunities to rent and in that case it could be convenient to rent ;)

I feel if one gets lucky to open a rewards chest that earns a ton of DEC it will make worth wild to rent. The odds of that happening is slim. Really at the players risk going renting. It’s just odds at the end of the day. Also what about daily rewards chests on top of the season ending? Additional assets to rent.

The current rental system is great, but the estimated value of a chest is crucial in choosing whether to rent or not.
It is true that the cards found in the chests generate a passive income if rented, but the probability of finding rentable cards at high prices are few.
Of course luck is a factor that can change everything but I always prefer to put the calculations first.
For example, if today there is only one day left before the end of the season and I want to rent the first 10 legendary cards of the highest level with the lowest price on the market, I will spend 4800 DEC tokens per day in order to advance one league and earn 12 more chests (+ 2 from the daily mission and +10 from the end of season reward). I spend 4800 to have about 2300 DEC tokens of value from chests (estimated value).
Last season renting the same cards cost less than half the current rental prices.
Right now the cards to make the jump from Diamond league to Champion league cost too much as an average rental price.
Different is the case for the lower leagues where the prices are lower.
At this time I prefer to rent my cards rather than take cards for rent ;)
