# <div class="text-center">A BAG OF CRAP!</div>
<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>In June 2019, I transferred $74 as part of the Kickstarter project for the RGB Critter. The delivery of the torch was promised for spring 2020. Time and again, the delivery was delayed. "Pandemic", the evil Chinese, a ship is transverse in the Panama Canal and even more excuses were communicated to me via email. I no longer expected that the torch would actually reach me at some point. On 25 May 2022, the time had come. After paying €17.02 in customs, I was allowed to hold the RGB Critter in my hands. Since then, I have spent many hours getting to know this torch. You can't use this thing in light painting without having a nervous breakdown.

<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Im Juni 2019 habe ich 74$ im Rahmen des Kickstarter Projektes für die RGB Critter überwiesen. Die Auslieferung der Taschenlampe war für Frühjahr 2020 versprochen. Immer wieder verzögerte sich die Auslieferung. "Pandemie", die bösen Chinesen, ein Schiff steht im Panamakanal quer und noch weitere Ausflüchte wurden mir per E-Mail mitgeteilt. Ich hatte schon gar nicht mehr damit gerechnet, dass die Taschenlampe tatsächlich irgendwann bei mir ankommen wird. Am 25. Mai 2022 war es dann soweit. Nach der Zahlung von 17,02€ Zoll durfte ich die RGB Critter in den Händen halten. Seitdem habe ich viele Stunden damit verbracht mich mit dieser Taschenlampe anzufreunden. Bis jetzt ist es mir nicht gelungen. Man kann dieses Teil nicht im Lightpainting verwenden ohne einen Nervenzusammenbruch zu bekommen. </p></div></div>
<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>The RGB Critter very cleanly displays many different colours. This torch is by far the brightest RGB torch I have had my hands on. The RGB Critter has different strobe, fading and colour change modes. All these functions can be changed.</p><p>But what use is all that if you can't operate this crappy torch properly? The buttons are much too close to each other. The rubber caps for the buttons are fused to the silicone cover. The silicone cover often slips during use. This means that the rubber caps are no longer over the buttons. You can no longer operate the torch. First you have to put the silicone cover back in the right position. And until then, every light painting is ruined because I can't switch off the torch.</p><p>To switch it off, you have to press the lower button three times. What is this shit? The Critter has three buttons. Any sane person would use one of the buttons for switching on and off and the other two for changing modes and programming.</p><p>Another highlight is the Momentary Mode, which unfortunately works the wrong way round. When the button is pressed, the light goes out, when you release it, the critter lights up.</p><p>I don't even want to talk about all the inconsistencies when changing modes, changing the brightness and frequency and programming new modes. In many places, even the operating instructions are of no help. Just one example: To change the brightness, select the desired mode, switch the torch to programming mode, set the desired brightness in this mode and then save it. The selected mode is then available twice. What substances do you have to substitute to come up with such nonsense? How about a simple regulation of the brightness by pressing and holding one of the three buttons globally for all modes of the torch? But that would be far too simple. In the meantime, I am convinced that the only purpose of the critter is to drive the user crazy.</p><p>And that's not all. If I lock the torch buttons electronically, the battery is empty after 24 hours at the latest. At first I thought there was something wrong with the battery. But after five attempts with five different batteries, it was clear that it was another undocumented feature. If the battery is empty, the torch will not turn on unintentionally under any circumstances when transported in a backpack. It doesn't get any safer than this! Without the key lock activated, the battery lasts for several weeks, including the use of the torch.</p><p>What I also like very much is that the torch is opened with a special tool to access the USB port or to change the battery. How can you come up with such nonsense? With a normal screw cap, as with almost every other torch, a manufacturer can certainly not stand out from the competition, but for the nerves of the customers, a simple solution would be very advantageous. Before I get annoyed about losing this strange tool when I'm light painting, I immediately throw it away. I use my Leatherman to open the miracle of technology.</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Die RGB Critter stellt sehr sauber viele verschiedene Farben dar. Diese Taschenlampe ist mit Abstand die hellste RGB Taschenlampe, die ich bisher in den Fingern hatte. Die RGB Critter hat verschiedene Strobe, Fading und Farbwechselmodi. Alle diese Funktionen kann man verändern.</p><p>Aber was nutzt das Alles wenn man diese beschissene Taschenlampe nicht vernünftig bedienen kann? Die Tasten sind viel zu nah nebeneinander. Die Gummikappen für die Taster sind mit der Silikonhülle verschmolzen. Die Silikonhülle verrutscht häufig während der Benutzung. Somit sind die Gummikappen nicht mehr über den Tastern. Man kann die Taschenlampe dann nicht mehr bedienen. Zuerst muss man die Silikonhülle wieder in die richtige Position bringen. Und bis dahin ist dann jedes Lightpainting versaut weil ich die Taschenlampe nicht ausschalten kann.</p><p>Zum Ausschalten muss man den unteren Taster dreimal betätigen. Was soll dieser Scheiß? Die Critter hat drei Taster. Jeder geistig gesunde Mensch würde einen der Taster zum Ein- und Ausschalten verwenden und die anderen beiden für den Wechsel der Modi und die Programmierung.</p><p>Ein weiteres Highlight ist der Momentary Mode, der leider falschrum funktioniert. Wenn der Taster gedrückt wird geht das Licht aus, wenn man loslässt leuchtet die Critter.</p><p>Von den ganzen Ungereimtheiten beim Wechsel der Modi, der Veränderung der Helligkeit und der Frequenz sowie der Programmierung neuer Modes will ich erst gar nicht reden. An vielen Stellen hilft auch die Bedienungsanleitung nicht weiter. Nur ein Beispiel: Um die Helligkeit zu verändern wählt man den gewünschten Mode, schaltet die Taschenlampe in den Programmiermodus, stellt in diesem die gewünschte Helligkeit ein und speichert das dann. Den gewählten Modus gibt es dann zweimal. Welche Substanzen muss man substituieren um sich ein derartigen Schwachsinn auszudenken? Wie wäre es mit einer einfachen Regelung der Helligkeit durch Drücken und Halten eines der drei Tasten global für alle Modi der Taschenlampe? Das wäre aber viel zu einfach. Mittlerweile bin ich davon überzeugt, dass der einzige Zweck der Critter darin besteht den Benutzer in den Wahnsinn zu treiben.</p><p>Und damit noch nicht genug. Wenn ich die Tasten der Taschenlampe elektonisch sperre ist spätestens nach 24 Stunden der Akku leer. Erst dachte ich, mit dem Akku sei etwas nicht in Ordnung. Aber nach fünf Versuchen mit fünf verschiedenen Akkus stand fest, dass es sich um ein weiteres nichtdokumentiertes Feature handelt. Wenn der Akku leer ist, geht die Taschenlampe unter keinen Umständen unbeabsichtigt beim Transport im Rucksack an. Sicherer geht es nicht! Ohne aktivierte Tastensperre hält der Akku mehrere Wochen inklusive Verwendung der Taschenlampe.</p><p>Was mir darüber hinaus sehr gefällt: die Taschenlampe wird mit einem speziellen Werkzeug geöffnet um an den USB Port zu gelangen oder den Akku zu wechseln. Wie kann man sich nur einen deratigen Schwachsinn ausdenken? Mit einer normale Schraubkappe, wie bei fast jeder anderen Taschenlampe, kann man sich als Hersteller sicher nicht von der Konkurrenz abheben, aber für das Nervenkostüm der Kunden wäre eine einfache Lösung allerdings sehr vorteilhaft. Bevor ich mich darüber ärgere, dass ich beim Lightpainting dieses komische Werkzeug verliere habe ich das Teil sofort weggeschmissen. Ich verwende meinen Leatherman um das Wunderwerk der Technik zu öffnen.</p></div></div>

<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>I have been using the old RGB torch from AOAM since 2015. The torch also has some defects. The switch can hardly be operated properly. There is a very flabby rubber cap in the opening of the housing. This makes safe operation almost impossible. For this reason, I removed the inside of the torch from the housing. At some point I printed a new housing on the 3D printer. This can be seen with a connected light whip in the picture.</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Seit 2015 benutze ich die alte RGB Taschenlampe von AOAM. Die Taschenlampe hat ebenfalls einige Mängel. Der Schalter lässt sich kaum vernünftig bedienen. In der Öffnung des Gehäuses steckt eine sehr wabblige Gummikappe. Eine sichere Bedienung ist damit nahezu ausgeschlossen. Aus diesem Grund habe ich das Innenleben der Taschenlampe aus dem Gehäuse entfernt. Irgendwann habe ich auf dem 3D Drucker ein neues Gehäuse gedruckt. Dieses ist mit einer verbundenen Lichtpeitsche im Bild zu sehen.</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>The old AOAM torch has only one button. In this case, it still makes sense to me that you have to press it three times to switch it off. Pressing it once switches the lamp on, pressing it twice switches between the different groups. So there is still a longer press to switch off the torch or the three presses. Why this concept was adopted for the new Critter with its three buttons is completely beyond me. Apart from the horrible housing and the even more horrible rubber cap on the button, the old RGB torch works as expected and has done so reliably for many years.</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Die alte AOAM Taschenlampe hat nur einen einzigen Taster. In diesem Fall leuchtet mir das noch ein, dass man diesen zum Ausschalten dreimal betätigen muss. Einmal drücken schaltet die Lampe ein, zweimal drücken wechselt zwischen den verschiedenen Gruppen. Also bliebe noch ein längeres Drücken um die Taschenlampe auszuschalten oder eben das dreimalige Betätigen. Aus welchem Grund dieses Konzept für die neue Critter mit den drei Tasten übernommen wurde ist mir völlig unverständlich. Von dem fürchterlichen Gehäuse und der noch fürchterlicheren Gummikappe des Tasters abgesehen funktioniert die alte RGB Taschenlampe wie erwartet und seit vielen Jahren zuverlässig. </p></div></div>
<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>But the biggest audacity of AOAM is yet to come. Some inadequacies in the UI have now been fixed in a firmware update. The Kickstarter project clearly advertised that the torch itself could be updated with firmware via the built-in USB port. Now, the manufacturer's website says that you have to send in the torch to have anything changed. Otherwise the firmware update will not work. I checked the calendar three times to see if today was 1 April. But it isn't. Do these guys drink any varnish? I pay for the torch upfront, wait almost three years to get it, get annoyed with the faulty design and UI bugs. And now I'm supposed to send the torch to the US at my expense, pay $10 to fix the flaw and then pay to send it back? And with a bit of luck, I'll have to pay customs another time because I can't prove that this is the exact torch I've already paid duty on. And by the way, the torch is then on the road for four, six or eight weeks. Great! This is not improved by the grandiose talk of "version 2.0" on the AOAM homepage. This update fixes unnecessary bugs, nothing else!</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Aber die größte Dreistigkeit von AOAM kommt erst noch. Einige Unzulänglicheiten der UI wurden mittlerweile in einem Firmware Update behoben. Das Kickstarter Projekt warb eindeutig damit, dass man selbst über den eingebauten USB Port Firmware Updates auf die Taschenlampe spielen kann. Nun steht auf der Internetseite des Herstellers, dass man die Taschenlampe einschicken muss, damit etwas verändert wird. Andernfalls funktioniert das Firmware Update nicht. Ich habe dreimal auf den Kalender geschaut ob heute der 1. April ist. Ist aber nicht. Saufen diese Typen irgendwelchen Lack? Ich bezahle die Taschenlampe im Voraus, warte fast drei Jahre bis ich sie habe, ärgere mich über die Fehlkonstruktion und die Fehler in der UI. Und jetzt soll ich die Taschenlampe auf meine Kosten in die USA schicken, 10$ für die Behebung der Fehler und dann auch die Rücksendung bezahlen? Und mit ein wenig Glück bezahle ich dann noch ein weitreres Mal Zoll weil ich nicht nachweisen kann, dass das exakt die Taschenlampe ist, die ich bereits verzollt habe. Und so ganz nebenbei ist die Taschenlampe dann vier, sechs oder acht Wochen auf Reisen. Großartig! Das wird auch nicht besser wenn auf der Homepage von AOAM großspurig von "Version 2.0" geschwafelt wird. Dieses Frimware Update behebt unnötige Fehler, sonst nichts!</p></div></div>

However, none of these manufacturers have failed to deliver on their promises regarding features. I feel completely screwed by Ants On A Melon. That is my problem. Anyone can make a mistake, but asking the customer to pay again to fix it is not acceptable. Aren't there laws in the US? Is it common practice there to sell things that do not correspond to the manufacturer's description? Isn't a defective device simply exchanged there without costs for the customer, as in Europe?</p></div></div>

Ich habe mehrere Taschenlampen, die ich kaum oder gar nicht mehr benutze. Allerdings hat keiner dieser Hersteller seine Versprechen bezüglich der Funktionen nicht gehalten. Ich fühle mich von Ants On A Melone komplett verarscht. Das ist mein Problem. Es kann jeder Fehler machen, aber für das Beheben des Fehlers dann den Kunden ein weiteres Mal zur Kasse bitten geht nicht. Gibt es in den USA keine Gesetze? Ist es dort üblich Dinge zu verkaufen, die nicht der Beschreibung des Herstellers entsprechen? Wird ein fehlerhaftes Gerät dort nicht einfach ausgetauscht ohne Kosten für den Kunden, so wie in Europa? </p></div></div>
# <div class="text-center">What do I do with the Critter now?</div>
<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>Option 1: I hit the Critter a few times with the 2kg bench hammer. For my mental condition, that would probably be the most appropriate.</p><p>Option 2: I try to flash the firmware without sending the torch to the US first. If that works, I'll throw this unspeakable silicone case into the dustbin with maximum momentum and try to find a solution for the buttons. If the update doesn't work, I go to option 1.</p><p>Option 3: I pack the jewel into the farthest corner of the cellar and wait for the thing to go mouldy.</p><p>Option 4: I use the Critter exclusively in Rainbow Fading Mode. For this, you only have to press twice after switching on. No, that's fun. Don't worry, I won't post dozens of brightly coloured orbs, "floral elements" or circular discs in the future. There are already lots of colleagues who make such pretty pictures. The competition is just too big for me.😂🤣😂</p><p>Under no circumstances will I send the torch to the USA and pay for it. Using it in its current condition is also almost impossible. If I haven't managed to find a solution for myself in several months to use this torch sensibly in light painting, I certainly won't find one in the near future. I'd rather continue to use the old RGB torch.</p></div></div>

Option 1: Ich schlage einige Male beherzt mit dem 2kg Bankhammer auf die Critter. Für meine geistige Verfassung wäre das wohl am zweckmäßigsten.</p><p>Option 2: Ich versuche die Firmware zu flashen ohne die Taschenlampe zuvor in die USA zu schicken. Wenn das funktioniert schmeiße ich diese unsägliche Silikonhülle mit maximalem Schwung in die Mülltonne und versuche eine Lösung für die Tasten zu finden. Wenn das Update nicht funktioniert geht es zu Option 1.</p><p>Option 3: Ich packe das Schmuckstück in die hinterste Ecke des Kellers und warte bis das Ding verschimmelt.</p><p>Option 4: Ich verwende die Critter ausschließlich im Rainbow Fading Mode. Dafür muss man nach dem Einschalten nur zweimal drücken. Nein, das ist ein Spaß. Keine Sorge, ich werde in Zukunft nicht dutzendweise knallbunte Orbs, "florale Elemente" oder Kreisscheiben posten. Da gibt es schon ganz viele Kollegen, die solche hübschen Bildchen machen. Da ist mir die Konkurenz einfach zu groß.😂🤣😂</p><p>Keinesfalls werde ich die Taschenlampe in die USA schicken und dafür noch bezahlen. Eine Verwendung im jetztigen Zustand ist ebenfalls nahezu ausgeschlossen. Wenn es mir in mehreren Monaten nicht gelungen ist eine Lösung für mich zu finden, diese Taschenlampe sinnvoll im Lightpainting einzusetzen, finde ich diese auch sicher in der nahen Zukunft nicht. Da benutze ich dann lieber weiter die alte RGB Taschenlampe.

# <div class="text-center">Conclusion</div>
<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>For light painters with nerves of steel and infinite patience, the RGB Critter may be a suitable tool. For all others, I can only strongly advise against the purchase and especially the use of this torch. In the meantime, I have been a light painter for 10 years. During this time I have used a wide variety of torches and other light sources. Many of these tools were and are certainly not optimal. So far I have always been able to find a solution to any problems with the technology. The RGB Critter is the first tool that I consider unsuitable. And on top of that, there is the annoyance about the absurd idea of AOAM to have the torch repaired at my expense. It would be appropriate if the AOAM gentlemen came by with a six-pack of beer, apologised profusely for their failure and took the opportunity to left a working example of their torch. AOAM? Never again!</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Für Light Painter mit Nerven aus Stahl und unendlicher Geduld ist die RGB Critter vielleicht ein geeignetes Werkzeug. Allen anderen kann ich nur dringend vom Kauf und vor Allem der Verwendung dieser Taschenlampe abraten. Mittlerweile bin ich seit 10 Jahren Light Painter. Ich habe in dieser Zeit die verschiedensten Taschenlampen und auch andere Lichtquellen verwendet. Viele dieser Werkzeuge waren und sind sicher nicht optimal. Bisher gelang es mir immer gedulig eine Lösung für etwaige Probleme mit der Technik zu finden. Die RGB Critter ist das erste Werkzeug, dass ich als ungeeignet bezeichne. Und dazu kommt noch der Ärger über die absurde Idee von AOAM die Taschenlampe auf meine Kosten reparieren zu lassen. Angemessen wäre, wenn die Herrschaften von AOAM mit einem Sechserträger Bier vorbei kommen würden, sich wortreich für ihr Versagen entschuldigen und bei der Gelegenheit ein funktionierendes Exemplar ihrer Taschenlampe da lassen würden. AOAM? Nie wieder!</p></div></div>

The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.</div>
