# <div class="text-center">IT FLIES AGAIN</div>

<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>On our trip to the abandoned military airfield a few weeks ago, a gust of wind had pushed the drone into a tree. It plunged several metres and subsequently had a broken arm. The really annoying thing was that it happened shortly after the first take-off and so there wasn't a single picture on the memory card yet.</p><p>I had looked at the weather data beforehand. The app showed that it was better not to fly today because there were strong gusts of wind. In the end, it was not a good idea to ignore this warning. But as the title suggests, the whole thing has a happy ending.)</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Bei unserem Ausflug auf den verlassenen Militätflugplatz vor einigen Wochen hatte ein Windböe die Drohne in einen Baum gedrückt. Sie stürzte einige Meter in die Tiefe und hatte danach einen gebrochenen Arm. Das wirklich ärgerliche daran war, dass das kurz nach dem ersten Start passiert ist und somit noch kein einziges Bild auf der Speicherkarte war.</p><p> Ich hatte vorher auf die Wetterdaten geschaut. Die App zeigte an, dass man heute lieber nicht fliegen soll weil es starke Windböen gibt. Letztendlich war es keine gute Idee diese Warnung zu ignorieren. Aber wir der Titel bereits suggeriert, hat die ganze Sache ein Happy End.</p></div></div>

<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>So sah die Drohne kurz nach dem Absturz aus. Einer der Arme war gebrochen, zwei Rotorenblätter waren beschädigt, einer der kleinen Landefüsse war gerissen und bei einem Fuss fehlte der Gummischuh.</p></div></div>

<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>Before I thought about repairing it, I tested whether the drone was still working at all. I switched on the drone and the remote control. After a few seconds, the connection was established. The display of the connected mobile phone showed the camera image of the drone. The gimbal could be controlled without any problems. So far, everything was good. If the camera and gimbal had been damaged, I would probably have thrown the drone into the dustbin with maximum momentum.</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Bevor ich mir Gedanken über die Reparatur machte, testete ich, ob die Drohne überhaupt noch funktioniert. Ich schaltete Drohne und Fernbedienung ein. Nach einigen Sekunden war die Verbindung hergestellt. Auf dem Display des angeschlossenen Mobiltelefons war das Kamerabild der Drohne zu sehen. Der Gimbal lies sich ohne Probleme steuern. Soweit alles gut. Hätten Kamera und Gimbal Schaden genommen, hätte ich die Drohne vermutlich gleich mit maximalem Schwung in die Mülltonne geworfen. </p></div></div>

<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>A new arm is available as an original part, but only complete with the motor and cables. The price is about 40€. Replacing the whole arm would certainly be the best option. I decided against replacing the whole arm for two reasons. Firstly, the motor was obviously perfectly fine and therefore does not need to be replaced. Secondly, it is very time-consuming to re-solder the motor cable to the circuit board. </p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Ein neuer Arm ist als Erstazteil erhältlich, allerdings nur komplett mit dem Motor und den Kabeln. Der Preis liegt bei ca. 40€. Ein Austausch des ganzen Arms wäre sicher die beste Option. Aus zwei Gründen entschied ich mich gegen den Austausch des ganzen Arms. Erstens war der Motor ganz offensichtlich völlig in Ordnung und muss somit nicht ausgetauscht werden. Zweites ist es sehr aufwändig das Kabel des Motors neu an die Platine zu löten. </p></div></div>

<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>The arm was cleanly broken through, nothing splintered. So I decided to glue the part. I used a 2 component glue. After curing it has a strength of 300kp per cm². The gluing area is about 0.5 cm². The strength of the glued area should now be greater than that of the material of the arm. The greatest difficulty was to join the two parts exactly together and to fix them in this position. I didn't feel like dismantling the entire arm. Then I could have simply replaced it. So I opened the housing and unhooked the spring that holds the arm in position and then glued the parts together in the assembled state.</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Der Arm war sauber durchgebrochen, nichts ist abgesplittert. Also entschied ich mich das Teil zu kleben. Ich verwendete einen 2 Komponenten Kleber. Nach dem Aushärten hat dieser eine Festigkeit von 300kp pro cm². Die Klebefläche ist ungefähr 0,5 cm² groß. Die Festigkeit der Klebestelle dürfte wohl jetzt größer sein als die des Materials des Arms. Die größte Schwierigkeit bestand darin, beide Teil genau zusammen zu fügen und in dieser Position zu fixieren. Ich hatte keine Lust den kompletten Arm zu demontieren. Dann hätte ich diesen ja auch einfach austauschen können. Also öffnete ich das Gehäuse und hängte die Feder, mit der der Arm in Position gehalten wird, aus und klebte die Teil dann im montierten Zustand zusammen.</p></div></div>

<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>I then gave the aircraft 4 new rotor blades and straightened the broken foot on the heat sink as best I could. In the next step, I wanted to make a test flight. This time I took the app's warning seriously. Either the wind was too strong, it was raining or I didn't have the time. Yesterday was finally the day. I drove to Oranienburg to test the drone. I started the drone and flew around a bit at a height of 2 metres. The flight behaviour was as usual. The few grams of glue did not unbalance the drone. The arm and the rotor were obviously in the right position even after the repair.</p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Ich spendierte dem Fluggerät dann noch 4 neue Rotorblätter und bog den angebrochenen Fuß am Kühlkörper wieder so gut es ging gerade. Im nächsten Schritt wollte ich dann einen Probflug machen. Diesmal nahm ich die Warnung der App ernst. Entweder war der Wind zu stark, es regnete oder ich hatte keine Zeit dafür. Gestern war es dann endlich so weit. Ich fuhr nach Oranienburg um die Drohne zu testen. Ich startete die Drohne und flog etwas in 2 Metern Höhe umher. Das Flugverhalten war wie immer. Die wenigen Gram Kleber brachten die Drohne nicht aus dem Gleichgewicht. Der Arm, bzw, der Rotor waren offensichtlich auch nach der Reparatur in der richtigen Position.</p></div></div>

<div class="pull-left"><div class="text-justify"><p>Fortunately, I was able to save the drone with simple means. I mainly use the drone for light painting. I attach a powerful torch to the drone and then illuminate larger buildings or landscapes from above at night. </p></div></div>
<div class="pull-right"><div class="text-justify"><p>Glücklicherweise konnte ich die Drohne mit einfachen Mitteln retten. Hauptsächlich setze ich die Drohne zum Light Painting ein. Dazu befestige ich eine leistungsstarke Taschenlampe an der Drohne und beleuchte dann in der Nacht größere Gebäude oder auch Landschaften von oben. </p></div></div>

### <div class="text-center">WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?</div>
<div class="text-justify">Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.</div>
